Do key innovations unlock diversification?A case-study on the morphological and ecological impact of pharyngognathy in acanthomorph fishes

Classification System for Monitoring Historic Changes in Forest and Non-Forest Woody Vegetation—A Basis for Management

Forest and non-forest vegetation fulfils many non-productive and productive functions. A good understanding of the trajectories and drivers of the woody vegetation change is necessary for the relevant management. Recently, the number of studies devoted to monitoring forest cover changes has increased. However, these works do not fully distinguish between different categories of forest and non-forest woody vegetation. The main aim of the study was to propose a classification system for monitoring historic changes of woody vegetation in the landscape. The period of the last 150 years was mapped through three time-lines (1842, 1953 and 2011). Data were obtained by interpreting historic maps (Stable Cadastral map of 1842) and historical (1953) and current orthophoto (2011) using ArcGIS tools. The classification was applied on the example of Sokolov region (57 km2) located in western Bohemia. The result of the research is a proposal for classifying woody vegetation stands into four categories based on the structural and localisation criteria: (1) Line adjacent woodlands, (2) Landscape woodlands, (3) Settlement woodlands, and (4) Compact woodlands. Information on the woody vegetation development using the proposed classification system is important for understanding the patterns, pressures, and driving forces that led to the formation of the present-day forest and non-forest woody vegetation in the landscape. The results can also be applied as a basis for future forest management practice as they can be used in other different fields, e.g. history, archaeology etc.

Colon cancer is the third most common malignancy and the fifth most frequent cause of death from neoplastic disease *** the time of diagnosis,more than 20%of patients already have metastatic *** the last 20 years,the natural course of the disease has changed due to major changes in the management of metastatic disease such as the advent of novel surgical and local therapy approaches as well as the introduction of novel chemotherapy drugs and targeted agents such as anti-epidermal growth factor receptor,anti-BRAF and *** is a complex biological process of new vessel formation from existing ones and is an integral component of tumor progression supporting cancer cells to grow,proliferate and *** molecules are involved in this proangiogenic process,such as vascular endothelial growth factor and its receptors on endothelial cells.A well-standardized methodology that is applied to assess angiogenesis in the tumor microenvironment is microvascular density by using immunohistochemistry with antibodies against endothelial CD31,CD34 and CD105 *** smaller molecules,such as the micro-RNAs,which are small non-coding RNAs,are being studied for their usefulness as surrogate biomarkers of angiogenesis and *** this review,we will discuss recent advances regarding the investigation of angiogenesis,the crosstalk between elements of the immune microenvironment and angiogenesis and how a disorganized tumor vessel network affects the trafficking of CD8+T cells in the tumor ***,we will present recent data from clinical trials that combine antiangiogenic therapies with immune checkpoint inhibitors in colorectal cancer.

Fecal DNA testing for colorectal cancer screening:molecular targets and perspectives

The early detection of colorectal cancer with effective screening is essential for reduction of cancer-specific mortality. The addition of fecal DNA testing in the armamentarium of screening methods already in clinical use launches a new era in the noninvasive part of colorectal cancer screening and emanates from a large number of previous and ongoing clinical investigations and technological advancements. In this review, we discuss the molecular rational and most important genetic alterations hallmarking the early colorectal carcinogenesis process. Also, representative DNA targets-markers and key aspects of their testing at the clinical level in comparison or/and association with other screening methods are described. Finally, a critical view of the strengths and limitations of fecal DNA tests is provided, along with anticipated barriers and suggestions for further exploitation of their use.

Recently,room temperature superconductivity was measured in a carbonaceous sulfur hydride material whose identity remains ***,first-principles calculations are performed to provide a chemical basis for structural candidates derived by doping H3S with low levels of *** stabilizes unusual bonding configurations about the carbon atoms,which can be six-fold coordinated as CH_(6) entities within the cubic H_(3)S framework,or four-fold coordinated as methane intercalated into the H-S lattice,with or without an additional hydrogen in the *** doping breaks degenerate bands,lowering the density of states at the Fermi level(NF),and localizing electrons in C-H *** levels of CH_(4) doping do not increase N_(F) to values as high as those calculated for Im3m-H_(3)S,but they can yield a larger logarithmic average phonon frequency,and an electron–phonon coupling parameter comparable to that of R3m-H_(3)*** implications of carbon doping on the superconducting properties are discussed.

Atrial fibrillation(AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and a huge public health burden associated with significant morbidity and mortality. For decades an increasing number of patients have undergone surgical treatment of AF, mainly during concomitant cardiac surgery. This has sparked a drive for conducting further studies and researching this field. With the cornerstone Cox-Maze III "cut and sew" procedure being technically challenging, the focus in current literature has turned towards less invasive techniques. The introduction of ablative devices has revolutionised the surgical management of AF, moving away from the traditional surgical lesions. The hybrid procedure, a combination of catheter and surgical ablation is another promising new technique aiming to improve outcomes. Despite the increasing number of studies looking at various aspects of the surgical management of AF, the literature would benefit from more uniformly conducted randomised control trials.

Molecular Mechanism of Disordering the Epidermis Structure under the Effect of Static Magnetic Field

The research deals with the physical mechanisms of molecular restructurings in horny layers caused by effect of constant magnetic field. The structure of dehydrated epidermis and changes in light dispersion in water solution of glucose as the main component of inter-desmosome bridges under influence of constant magnetic field have been experimentally studied. On the basis of the results obtained these bridges are assumed to play key role in disordering the horny layer under the action of constant magnetic field. This assumption agrees with the results of clinical research.

Negative Pressure Pulmonary Edema on Extubation of a 9-Month-Old Baby Boy

Background: Negative Pressure Pulmonary Edema (NPPE) is an uncommon, but well recognized clinical entity that continues to be reported as a complication of upper airway obstructions during induction or emergence. It results from the negative intrathoracic pressure generated with spontaneous ventilation with concurrent upper airway obstruction. Aim: To present an unusual case of NPPE and review the pathophysiology and treatment. Case: It usually occurs in young healthy athletic adults. We are reporting NPPE in a nine-month-old ex-premature baby. We discuss his intraoperative events leading to NPPE, subsequent intraoperative course and treatment. Conclusion: NPPE needs to be promptly recognized and treated. If the edema resolves, the patient can be successfully extubated, but should be observed overnight.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the ligaments of the craniocervical region at 3Tesla magnetic resonance unit: Quantitative and qualitative assessment

Purpose: The assessment of the morphology and dimensions of the craniocervical ligaments using a 3 Tesla (T) Magnetic Resonance (MR) scanner, the correlatation of our results with those from cadaveric and other MR studies and the detection of the most appropriate sequence for the best imaging of the craniovertebral junction ligaments. Methods: 58 healthy volunteers (mean age 45 years) underwent a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine at 3T MR unit. The MRI protocol included axial, coronal and sagittal Proton-Density (PD) sequences and sagittal T1 Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) and T2 sequences. The images were evaluated by two radiologists and the posterior atlantoocipital ligament, the anterior atlantoocipital ligament, the transverse ligament and the apical ligament were anatomically detected, described and measured. Results: The transverse ligament was identified at 93.1%, the apical ligament was identified at 60.34%, the posterior at- lantooccipital membrane was identified at 94.8% and the anterior atlantooccipital membrane was identified at 96.5% of the cases. All ligaments appeared with low signal intensity, except the anterior atlantooc-cipital ligament which appeared with intermediate signal intensity. Their length, width and thickness were measured and, in general, correlated well with other anatomic and MR studies. Conclusion: Reliable assessment of the morphology and signal intensity of the craniocervical ligaments can be achieved with PD sequence at 3T MR imaging. The sagittal plane provides better delineation of the craniocervical (CC) ligaments but the axial and coronal planes are of paramount importance in the assessment of the transverse and apical ligaments.
