A new procedure for blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) micropropagation in programmed Temporary Immersion Bioreactors (TIBs based on two separate bottles) was developed for the commercial genotypes Biloxi, Sharp Blue and Brillita. Plant cultures were developed in a controlled environment with 0.4 MPa CO2 enrichment, sucrose-reduced medium, and light intensity of 60 mM m-2·s-1. Principal component analysis showed that component 1 (C1) grouped 64.08% of the total variability, while the first two components accounted for 86.97%. Representation of the principal components demonstrated three clusters corresponding with the blueberry genotypes, and within each cluster plants micropropagated in agar-base medium grouped separately from those plants multiplied in TIBs. Both plant number and total internodes traits (related to the productive efficiency) were demonstrated superior in blueberries propagated in TIBs. Additionally, when transferred to greenhouse conditions, blueberries propagated in TIBs showed higher adaptability and growing rates than those cultured by the conventional approach, altogether evidencing the occurrence of a photomixotrophic stage in the vitroplantlets cultured in TIBs.

Hazardous chemicals used in electronic and electrical consumer products can re-enter commerce when these products are recycled. The objectives of this study were to 1) identify the possible sources of unexpected chemicals and elements in consumer products, including the use of recycled E-waste plastics and 2) demonstrate bromine detection with nondestructive spectroscopy as an indicator of brominated flame retardants contaminating new products via recycled waste streams. More than 1500 consumer products of diverse types purchased in 2012-2014 were examined using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy for correlations between bromine and other elements. New electronic products were much more likely than new non-electronics to contain greater than 1000 ppm bromine, consistent with intentionally added flame retardants, while non- electronic products were more likely to contain between 5 and 100 ppm bromine, suggesting unintentional contamination. A typical suite of elements present in E-waste was found in a majority of plastic products. Two product categories, vinyl floor tiles and beaded necklaces/garlands, were explored in more detail. Specific flame retardant chemicals in bead samples were identified by mass spectrometry and their distribution in beads was studied using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Five brominated chemicals typically used as flame retardants, including BDE-209, were identified in 50 of 50 Mardi Gras beads analyzed.

Cardiac extracellular matrices(ECM)play crucial functional roles in cardiac *** studies have mainly focused on collagen,the major structural ECM in heart *** role of elastin in cardiac mechanics,however,is poorly *** this study,we investigated the spatial distribution and microstructural morphologies of cardiac elastin in porcine left *** demonstrated that the epicardial elastin network had location-and depth-dependency,and the overall epicardial elastin fiber mapping showed certain correlation with the helical heart muscle fiber *** compared to the epicardial layer,the endocardial layer was thicker and has a higher elastin-collagen ratio and a denser elastin fiber network;moreover,the endocardial elastin fibers were finer and more wavy than the epicardial elastin fibers,all suggesting various interface *** myocardial interstitial elastin fibers co-exist with the perimysial collagen to bind the cardiomyocyte bundles;some of the interstitial elastin fibers showed a locally aligned,hinge-like structure to connect the adjacent cardiomyocyte *** collagen-elastin combination reflects an optimal design in which the collagen provides mechanical strength and elastin fibers facilitate recoiling during ***,cardiac elastin fibers,along with collagen network,closely associated with the Purkinje cells,indicating that this ECM association could be essential in organizing cardiac Purkinje cells into“fibrous”and“branching”morphologies and serving as a protective feature when Purkinje fibers experience large deformations in *** short,our observations provide a structural basis for future in-depth biomechanical investigations and biomimicking of this long-overlooked cardiac ECM component.

It is well known that the native oxide layer on titanium (Ti) implants is responsible for its superior biocompatibility and tissue integration. Recent efforts have targeted titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a good candidate for surface modification at the nanoscale, leading to improved nanotextures for enhancing host integration properties. Here we explore the in vitro inflammatory response of macrophages to TiO2 nanotube surface structures with different diameters (30, 50, 70, and 100nm) created by a simple electrochemical anodization process. This work was designed to study the nanosize effect for controlling and optimizing inflammatory response to a Ti implant surface utilizing nanotechnology. Using intracellular staining and flow cytometry for detecting macrophage TNF cytokine expression, we have found that 70nm diameter nanotube surfaces have the bestadvantage in terms of diameter size by producing theweakest inflammatory response, compared to a commercially available Ti surface without oxide modification. We also present cell-freedata on free radical scavenging using the nanotube surfaces with different diameters to test the removal of nitric oxidefrom solution;again, our findings indicate that 70nm titanium dioxide nanotubes exhibit optimal removal of nitric oxide from solution, making them excellent candidates for use in medical devices that would benefit from decreased inflammatory

似乎从2002年开始,继韩流来袭,美国电视连续剧这股浪潮也开始席卷中国大地。从《X档案)、《急诊室的故事》、《六人行》、《欲望城市》一路延续到现在的《24小时》、《迷失》、《绝望的主妇》和《越狱》。清晰记得自己看得最早的一部美国电视剧还是小学那会儿热播的《Growing Pains》(《成长的烦恼》),随意看了一集,便喜欢上了剧集里诙谐的家庭幽默以及性格鲜明的一家五口。接着便陆续迷上了《六人行》、《欲望城市》,一直到现在对以设置悬念见长的《迷失》欲罢不能、辗转反侧。而身边的朋友、同事们也对这些剧集乐此不疲,甚至通宵达旦。看来这些大洋彼岸题材各异的电视剧真是大大满足了中国影迷的各种口味。不得不感慨——原来时间是可以这样被“浪费”的。(?) We present numerical simulations of blood flow through a brain vascular aneurysm with an artificial stent using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). The aim of this work is to analyze how the flow into an aneurysm changes using different stent configurations. The initial conditions for the simulations were constructed from angiographic images of a real patient with an aneurysm. The wall shear stresses, pressure and highest velocity within the artery, and other particular quantities are calculated which are of medical specific interest. The numerical simulations of the cerebral circulation help doctors to determine if the patient’s own vascular anatomy has the conditions to allow arterial stenting by endovascular method before the surgery or even evaluate the effect of different stent structure and materials. The results show that the flow downstream the aneurysm is highly modified by the stent configuration and that the best choice for reducing the flow in the aneurysm is to use a completely extended Endeavor stent.

Investigations on the Thermodynamic Stability and Availability of Nutrients for Plants by Humic Substances Extracted from Peat Samples

This work evaluated the complexation capacity, exchange constants and availability of micronutrients for plants and humic substances extracted from peat samples. Samples of humic substances extracted from two tropical peats （HS-P1 and HS-P2） were enriched with the micronutrients Cu（II）, Co（II）, Fe（II）, Mn（II）, Ni（II） and Zn（II） and the parameters for formation of the complexes （HS-N） were evaluated at different pH. The Scatchard model was used to calculate the maximum complexation capacity and the nutrient availability was studied using exchange capacity experiments based on ultrafiltration procedure. The optimum pH for complexation was 4.5 and the order of affinity was： Fe（II）〉 Cu（II）〉 Co（II）〉 Mn（II） = Ni（II）〉 Zn（II）. The maximum complexation capacity reached 56.8 mg·g-1 Fe of HS-P1 （the highest） and 1.7 mg.g1 Zn of HS-P2 （the slightest）. The exchange experiments showed that HS-P-Fe complexes were formed preferentially. The least stable complex was formed with Zn, which was therefore, more easily available. The results contribute to understand the behavior and availability of some nutrients in soils.

A New Nano-Platform for Drug Release via Nanotubular Aluminum Oxide

Nanotubular materials have many favorable properties for drug delivery. We present here a pioneering study of controlled release of a model drug, amoxicillin, from the internal nanopore structure of self-ordered, periodically spaced-apart aluminum oxide with an innovative, nanotubular geometry. This aluminum oxide nanotube geometry has not yet been revealed for biological applications, thus we have selected this oxide nanotube structure and demonstrated its ability as a drug carrier. Controlled, sustained release was achieved for over 5 weeks. The release kinetics from the nanotube layer was thoroughly characterized and it was determined that the amount of drug released was proportional to the square root of time. This type of controlled release and longevity from the nanotube layer has potential for therapeutic surface coatings on medical implants. Furthermore, this type of geometry has many features that are advantageous and biologically relevant for enhancing tissue biointegration.
