Deep recycling of volatile elements in the mantle:Evidence from the heterogeneous B isotope in intra-plate basalts

Volatiles in the mantle are crucial for Earth’s geodynamic and geochemical *** the deep recycling of volatiles is key for grasping mantle chemical heterogeneity,plate tectonics,and long-term planetary *** subduction transfers abundant volatile elements from the Earth’s surface into the mantle,the fate of hydrous portions within subducted slabs during intensive dehydration processes remains *** isotopes,only efficiently fractionating near the Earth’s surface,are valuable for tracing volatile recycling *** this study,we document a notably large variation inδ^(11)B values(−14.3‰to+8.2‰)in Cenozoic basalts from the South China *** basalts,associated with a high-velocity zone beneath East China,are suggested to originate from the mantle transition *** the majority exhibitδ^(11)B values(−10‰to−5‰)resembling the normal mantle,their enriched Sr-Nd-Pb isotope compositions and fluid-mobile elements imply hydrous components in their source,including altered oceanic crust and *** normalδ^(11)B values are attributed to the dehydration *** highδ^(11)B values in the basalts indicate the presence of subducted serpentinites in their mantle source.A small subset of samples with lowδ^(11)B values and radiogenic isotope enrichments suggests a contribution from recycled detrital sediments,though retaining minimal volatile elements after extensive *** findings provide compelling evidence that serpentinites within subducted slabs predominantly maintain their hydrous nature during dehydration processes in subduction *** may transport a considerable amount of water into deep mantle reservoirs,such as the mantle transition zone.

A highly fertile mantle xenolith entrained in the Upper Cretaceous Daxizhuang basalt,Shandong Province,China provides petrological evidence for reaction between basaltic melt and refractory peridotite in Mesozoic lithospheric mantle beneath the eastern North China *** xenolith is zoned with a Iherzolite core,a sheared wehriite mande,and a reaclant *** Iherzolite has a medium-grained granular texture and contains olivine,orthopyroxene,clinopyroxene,and spinel with low Mg# values(≤87).This is the lowest value observed globally in mantle xenoliths entrained in both kimberlites and basalts from old cratons,but is close to low-Mg# spinel lherzolites entrained in adjacent region of the eastern North China *** wehriite mantle shows clear orientation and foliation of constituent olivine and *** reactant rim displays a symplectite texture of fine-grained olivine,clinopyroxene,and spinel,and is characterized by LREE-enriched *** is lacking from the sheared mantle and reactant *** zoning and systematic core-rim variations in major and trace elements of the constituent minerals demonstrate the occurrence of the refertilization through the melt-peridotite reaction in the *** reaction may have produced the low-Mg# peridotite from a high-Mg# protolith and could be an important mechanism for the change of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle from a Paleozoic refractory mantle to a Late Mesozoic fertile mantle.

Li concentrations and isotopic compositions of coexisting minerals(ol,opx,and cpx) from peridotite xenoliths entrained in the Hannuoba Tertiary basalts,North China *** insight into Li isotopic fractionation between mantle minerals during melt-rock interaction in the considerably thinned lithospheric *** analyses of mineral separates show significant enrichment of Li in cpx(2.4-3.6 ppm) relative io olivine(1.2-1.8 ppm),indicating that these peridotites have been affected by mantle metasomatism with mafic silicate *** olivine separates(δLi～+3.3‰to +6.4‰) are isotopically heavier than coexisting pyroxenes(δLi～-3.3‰to -8.2‰in cpx,and -4.0‰to -6.7‰in opx).Such large variation suggests Li elemental and isotopic *** conclusion is supported by results from in situ SIMS analyses of mineral grains where significant Li elemental and isotopic zonations *** olivine and opx have lower Li concentrations and heavier Li isotopes in the rims than in the *** reverse correlation ofδLi with Li concentrations indicates diffusive fractionation of Li ***,the zoning patterns in coexisting cpx show isotopically heavier rims with higher Li *** positive correlation betweenδLi and Li concentrations suggests a melt mixing *** attribute Li concentration and isotope zonation in minerals to the effects of two-stage diffusive fractionation coupled with melt-rock interaction. The earliest melts may have been derived from the subducted oceanic slab with lowδLi values produced by isotopic fractionation during the dehydration of the seawater-altered *** at later stages were derived from the asthenosphere and interacted with the peridotites,producing the Li elemental and isotopic zoning in mineral *** data thus provide evidence for multiple-stage peridotite-melt interaction in the lithospheric mantle beneath the northern North China Craton.

A rare composite xenolith and abundant cumulative pyroxenites obtained from the Mesozoic Fan-gcheng basalts on the eastern North China Craton record a complex history of melt percolation and circulation in the subcontinental lithospheric *** composite xenolith has a dunite core and an olivine clinopyroxenite *** dunite is of cumulative origin and has a granular recrys-tallized texture and extremely low Mg#[100 Mg/ (Mg+Fe)=81-82]contents in *** olivine clinopyroxenite contains larger clinopyroxene and/or orthopyroxene with a few fine-grained olivine and tiny phlogopite,feldspar,and/or carbonate minerals interstitial to *** clinopyroxene has low Mg#(83-85). Compositional similarity between dunitic olivine and pyroxenitic one indicates a sequential crystallization of dunite and pyroxenite from a precursor *** xenoliths include olivine websterites and clinopyroxenites, both are of cumulative *** of the melt from major oxides in olivines and REE concentrations in clin-opyroxenes in these composite and pyroxenite xenoliths suggests a derivation from subducted crustal materials, consistent with the highly enriched EMII-like Sr and Nd isotopic ratios observed in the *** of phlogopite,feldspar and carbonate minerals in some xenoliths requires the melt rich in alkalis(K,Na),silica and volatiles(water and CO)at the latest stage as well,similar to highly silicic and potassic ***,the occurrence of these composite and pyroxenite xenoliths provides an evidence for voluminous injection of recycled crustal melts into the lithosphere beneath the southeastern North China Craton at the Late Mesozoic,a reason for the rapid litho-spheric enrichment in both elemental and isotopic compositions.

Expression of the Japanese oak silkworm Antheraea yamamai fibroin gene in the domesticated silkworm Bombyx mori

To understand the evolutionary conservation ofthe gene expression mechanism and secretion machinery between Antheraea and Bombyx fibroins, we introduced the genomic A. yamamai fibroin gene into the domesticated silkworm, B. mori. The spliced A. yamamai fibroin mRNA appeared only in the posterior region of the silk gland of the transgenic silkworm, suggesting that the functions of the fibroin promoter region and the splicing machinery are conserved between these two species. The A. yamarnai fibroin protein was detected in the lumen of the silk gland of the transgenic silkworm, albeit at lower levels compared with the B. mori-type fibroin. We found a strong degeneration of the posterior region of the silk gland of the transgenic silkworm. As a result, the cocoon shell weight was much lower in the transgenic silkworm than in the non-transgenic line. These results indicate that the promoter function and splicing machinery are well conserved between A. yamamai and B. mori but that the secretion mechanism of fibroin is diversified between the two.

Rescue of white egg 1 mutant by introduction of the wildtype Bombyx kynurenine 3-monooxygenase gene

In silkworms, the white egg 1 （w-1） mutant, which is characterized by white eyes and white eggs, is deficient in Bombyx kynurenine 3-monooxygenase （KMO） activity. To investigate whether the w-1 mutant phenotype is rescued by introducing the wild-type KMO gene, we constructed transgenic silkworms with the wild-type Bombyx KMO gene under the control of either the cytoplasmic actin gene promoter （A3KMO） or the native KMO gene promoter （KKMO）. We created two transgenic lines with A3KMO and one line with KKMO constructs. The eyes of adults in these lines were brown, and the eggs laid by the transgenic females were also brown. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction（RT-PCR） analysis showed that the A3KMO silkworm lines expressed the transcript in the mid-gut, fat bodies, and Malpighian tubules. The KKMO line expressed the transcript only in the fat bodies and Malpighian tubules. The intensity of eye and egg color in the transgenic lines was proportional to the KMO expression level. Interestingly, transgenic larvae with the A3KMO construct had a light brown larval cuticle, but the KKMO line did not. These results indicate that the wild-type KMO gene can be used as a marker gene for visually screening transgenic silkworms.

Imaging of community-acquired pneumonia: Roles of imaging examinations, imaging diagnosis of specific pathogens and discrimination from noninfectious diseases

This article reviews roles of imaging examinations in the management of community-acquired pneumonia(CAP), imaging diagnosis of specific CAP and discrimination between CAP and noninfectious diseases. Chest radiography is usually enough to confirm the diagnosis of CAP, whereas computed tomography is required to suggest specific pathogens and to discriminate from noninfectious diseases. Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia, tuberculosis, Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia and some cases of viral pneumonia sometimes show specific imaging findings. Peribronchial nodules, especially tree-in-bud appearance, are fairly specific for infection. Evidences of organization, such as concavity of the opacities, traction bronchiectasis, visualization of air bronchograms over the entire length of the bronchi, or mild parenchymal distortion are suggestive of organizing pneumonia. We will introduce tips to effectively make use of imaging examinations in the management of CAP.

Development of a Molecular Marker to Identify a Candidate Line of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) with a High Curcumin Content

Dried and fresh rhizomes of the spice turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) are well known in traditional medicine, and curcu- min is widely used in various geographic regions. Although there are differences in the amount of curcumin within this species, identification of the candidate line by rhizome is difficult because of the relative simplicity of its morphological characteristics. To accurately identify lines of C. longa with a high content of curcumin, we analysed several sequences of chloroplast DNA. First, to determine the appropriate outgroup taxa in which to conduct infras-pecific analyses of C. longa, we reconstructed the molecular phylogenetic tree of C. longa and its allied species. The results showed that C. aromatica and C. zedoaria are closely related to C. longa. Next, to develop a molecular marker for identifying lines of C. longa with a high content of curcumin, a network analysis using chloroplast microsatellite regions was performed. Results showed that a unique haplotype within C. longa corresponds to the high curcumin content line. Therefore, the chloroplast microsatellite regions used for the analysis allowed us to determine the lines of this species with high cur- cumin content.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of universal primers on the tensile bond strength between zirconia and resin *** specimens were divided into five groups based on the surface treatment with the following primers:MP(Monobond Plus),SU(ScotchBond Universal),AZ(AZ Primer),BM(Beauty bond Multi),and BL(Bondmer Lightless).After priming,stainless steel rods were bonded to the zirconia specimens with composite *** tensile bond strength test was performed:stored at room temperature for 1 day;stored in distilled water at 37°C for 7 days;and underwent thermal *** BL group demonstrated a significantly higher tensile bond strength than other groups when stored at room temperature for 1 day(p<0.05).The primer that acted via chemical polymerization appeared to be most effective in improving the bond strength between the two materials in this study.

Brown alga (Undaria pinnatifida) was treated with alginate lyase and hydrolyzed using 17 kinds of proteases andthe inhibitory activity of the hydrolysates for the angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) was measured. Four hydrolysateswith potent ACE-inhibitory activity were administered singly and orally to spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). The sys-tolic blood pressure of SHRs decreases significantly after single oral administration of the brown alga hydrolysates by pro-tease S ’Amano’ (from Bacillus stearothermophilus) at the concentration of 10 (mg protein) (kg body weight)-1. In the 17weeks of feeding experiment, 7-week-old SHRs were fed standard diet supplemented with the brown alga hydrolysates for 10weeks. In SHRs fed 1.0 and 0.1% brown alga hydrolysates, elevating of systolic bloodpressure was significantly suppressedfor 7 weeks. To elucidate the active components, the brown alga hydrolysates were fractionated by 1-butanol extraction andHPLC on a reverse-phase column. Seven kinds of ACE-inhibitory peptides were isolated and identified by amino acid compo-sition analysis, sequence analysis, and LC-MS with the results Val-Tyr, Ile-Tyr, Ala-Trp, Phe-Tyr, Val-Trp, Ile-Trp, andLeu-Trp. Each peptide was determined to have an antihypertensive effect after a single oral administration in SHRs. Thebrown alga hydrolysates were also confirmed to decrease the blood pressure in humans.
