Thermal power plants are generally constructed near to sea coast to meet their requirement of coolingwater. The warm water discharge from the thermal power plant is one of the major environmentalconcerns in view of the thermal pollution in the sea water. The temperature limit for the warm waterdischarge from the thermal power plant has to be monitored and controlled. Coastal Gujarat PowerLimited (CGPL) operates (24×7) at an “once-through system” based sea water circulation for powergeneration. The used sea water is then discharged into the sea through an outlet channel. As per environmental norms, the discharge water temperature needs to be maintained below the stipulated “delta”rise (+7 ℃) with respect to ambient sea surface temperature at the inlet. We demonstrate the applicability of thermal remote sensing data in understanding the seasonal and temporal variations of thetemperature difference between the discharge water and the ambient sea water. We used thermal banddata from Landsat-8 satellite imagery to map water surface temperature and create temperature profilesalong the intake and outflow channels (till the sea), to understand the variation of temperature andestimate the “DT” between intake point and various observation points along the outflow. This analysiswas carried out for all 11 months (except June) of the year 2018 to correlate temperature variations withseasonal changes. Tidal conditions during the time of data acquisition were also considered to accountfor the effect of tides on DT. The result shows that the average temperature rise between intake andoutflow are maintained at ~3 ℃ across all the months of 2018, with minor variations in the months ofJuly and August. Further, average temperature drop from outflow to cooling channel (before diaphragm)is seen to be ~2 ℃ across all the months with similar seasonal fluctuations.

Assessment of geodetic strain and stress variations in Nepal due to 25 April 2015 Gorkha earthquake:Insights from the GNSS data analysis and b-value

A magnitude M;7.8 earthquake occurred on 25 April 2015(referred as Gorkha earthquake).We have analyzed the spatial variation of b-value and two-dimensional strain within Nepal Himalaya before and after the Gorkha earthquake.We have used continuous Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS)data from 30 stations in the Nepal region for geodetic strain estimation and earthquake data for b-value estimation.The GNSS data were processed using double differencing technique for the accurate position of each station.The precise velocity vectors show a general azimuth of north east for all the stations and have been used to derive two-dimensional strain.Between epicenters of Gorkha(25 April 2015)and Dolakha earthquakes(12 May 2015),we observed high co-seismic horizontal displacements(0.2 m to 2 m).In the Pre-seismic deformation study,maximum strain accumulation(56.40×10;)and low bvalue(0.79-0.89)was observed in and around the Western Nepal region,which may be responsible for the 2015 Gorkha earthquake.The potential seismic zones were identified by GIS based integration of geodetic strain and b-value map and superimposition using weighted overlay method.The Maximum strain and low b-value are now observed in the eastern part of Nepal.Hence,the spatial disposition of elastic energy has changed after the two major earthquakes and continuous seismic hazard assessment is required in the eastern Nepal.

Damage and geological assessment of the 18 September 2011 M_w 6.9 earthquake in Sikkim,India using very high resolution satellite data

Post-disaster very high resolution（VHR） satellite data are potential sources to provide detailed information on damage and geological changes for a large area in a short time.In this paper,we studied landslides triggered by the M_w 6.9 earthquake in Sikkim,India which occurred on 18 September 2011 using VHR data from Cartosat-1,GeoEye-1,QuickBird-2 and WorldView-2 satellites.Since the earthquake-affected area is located in mostly inaccessible Himalayan terrain,VHR data from these satellites provided a unique opportunity for quick and synoptic assessment of the damage.Using visual change analysis technique through comparison of pre- and post-earthquake images,we assessed the damage caused by the event.A total of 123 images acquired from eight satellites,covering an area of4105 km2 were analysed and 1196 new landslides triggered by the earthquake were mapped.Road blockages and severely affected villages were also identified.Geological assessment of the terrain highlighted linear disposition of landslides along existing fault scarps,suggesting a reactivation of fault.The landslide inventory map prepared from VHR images also showed a good correlation with the earthquake shake map.Results showed that several parts of north Sikkim,particularly Mangan and Chungthang,which are close to the epicentre,were severely affected by the earthquake,and that the event-based landslide inventory map can be used in future earthquake-triggered landslide susceptibility assessment studies.

Application of Response Surface Methodology for Analysing and Optimizing the Finned Solar Air Heater

In this research paper,a solar air heater with triangular fins has been experimentally analysed and optimized.Initially,an experimental set-up of a solar air heater having triangular fins has been developed at the location of 28.10°N,78.23°E.The heat transfer rate through fins and fins efficiency has been determined by the Finite Difference Method model equations.The experimental data and modeled data of response parameters have been optimized in MINITAB-17 software by the Response Surface Methodology tool.For creating the response surface design,three input parameters have been selected namely solar intensity,Reynolds number,and fin base-to-height ratio.The range of solar intensity,Reynolds number,and fin base-to-height ratio is 600 to 1000W/m^(2),4000 to 6000,and 0.4 to 0.8 respectively.The response surface design has been analyzed by calculating the outlet temperature,friction factor,Nusselt number,fin efficiency,thermal performance factor,and exergy efficiency.The optimum settings of input parameters:solar intensity is 1000 W/m^(2);Reynolds number is 4969.7,and the fin base to height ratio is 0.6060,on which these response:namely outlet temperature of 92.531℃,friction factor of 0.2350,Nusselt number of 127.761,thermal efficiency of 50.836%,thermal performance factor of 1.4947,and exergy efficiency of 8.762%.

Role of doxycycline in the treatment of dengue infection: An open-label, randomized, controlled, pilot trial

Objective:To measure the effect of doxycycline on inflammatory marker[IL-6,TNF-α,ferritin and C reactive protein(CRP)]levels in patients with dengue infection.Methods:A single-centre,open-label,parallel-group randomized controlled trial was done in PGIMER Chandigarh from June 2021 to October 2022.Patients were randomized using a simple randomization process into two groups:the doxycycline treatment group(n=35)and the control group(n=34).Patients in the treatment group were given oral doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for five days along with standard treatment,whereas patients in the control group received only standard treatment.The objective was to measure the effect of doxycycline on inflammatory markers in dengue infection.Results:On comparative analysis at day 5,there was a statistically significant reduction in the median values of ferritin and CRP in cases compared to the control group(ferritin:P=0.006 and CRP:P=0.006).No significant reduction was noted in the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α.Conclusions:Doxycycline treatment led to a reduction of inflammatory markers in dengue infection.

Plant-available water capacity of soils at a regional scale:Analysis of fixed and dynamic field capacities

Estimation of the plant-available water capacity(PAWC)of soils at a regional scale helps in adopting better land use planning,developing suitable irrigation schedules for crops,and optimizing the use of scarce water resources.In the current study,72 soil profiles were sampled from the Barossa region of South Australia to estimate pedo-transfer functions deduced from easily estimated soil properties.These functions were then used to estimate the fixed(10 and 33 kPa)and dynamic pressure head(h_(fc))water contents at field capacity(FC)for minimum drainage flux(0.01 and 0.001 cm d^(-1)),which serves as the upper boundary for plant-available water in soils.The estimated residual water content was corrected for subsoil constraints,especially the exchangeable sodium percentage(ESP).The results showed that the mean values of h_(fc)in sand-dominated light and medium textured soils(i.e.,sand,loamy sand,sandy loam,and loam)varied in a narrow range(15.8-18.2 kPa),whereas those in the clay-dominated heavy textured soils(i.e.,clay loam)showed a wide range(11.3-49.3 kPa).There were large differences in PAWC for dynamic FC(PAWC_(fc))and fixed FC at 10 kPa(PAWC10),33 kPa(PAWC33),and a mix of 10and 33 kPa(PAWC_(10,33))pressure heads depending on soil texture.Normally,the difference between PAWC at 10 kPa and h_(fc)(ΔPAWC_(10))was positive,whereas that between 33 kPa and h_(fc)(ΔPAWC_(33))was negative across all sites.Nevertheless,the estimation of PAWC assuming a fixed FC at 10 and 33 kPa pressures(i.e.,PAWC_(10,33))for sandy,clay,and silty soils reduced the difference between fixed and dynamic pressure PAWCs tok clays can have great impacts on the wate

The significance of the heme-metabolizing enzyme heme oxygenase-1(HMOx1)in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer(CRC)has not been fully explored.HMOx1 cytoprotection is imperative to limit oxidative stress.However,its roles in preventing carcinogenesis in response to high levels of heme are not thoroughly understood.This study re-views various mechanisms associated with the paradoxical role of HMOx1,which is advantageous for tumor growth,refractoriness,and survival of cancer cells amid oxidative stress in heme-induced CRC.The alternate role of HMOx1 promotes cell proliferation and metastasis through immune modulation and angiogenesis.Inhibiting HMOx1 has been found to reverse tumor promotion.Thus,HMOx1 acts as a conditional tumor promoter in CRC pathogenesis.

Sustainable Integrated Inventory Model for Substitutable Deteriorating Items Considering Both Transport and Industry Carbon Emissions

Sustainable integrated inventory management policy focuses on reducing the environmental impact of the manufacturing and transport sector.This study develops an integrated single-manufacturer single-buyer inventory model for substitutable deteriorating items considering transport and industry carbon emissions.This article categorizes carbon emissions into two parts:direct and indirect emissions.We also assume two mutually substitutable items,and substitution is considered on the buyer's side.If one of the items is out of stock,the demand for that item can be partially satisfied by the stock of the other item;else,demand will be lost.The purpose of this study is to minimize the integrated cost of the supply chain with total carbon emissions produced by industry and transport sectors and to determine the optimal number of deliveries,order level and carbon emission quantity.A solution procedure is developed to find the optimal values of the policy.Numerical experiments and sensitivity analyses are presented to demonstrate the proposed model.
