The potential leaching and mobilization of trace elements from FGD-gypsum of a coal-fired power plant under water re-circulation conditions

Experimental and geochemical modelling studies were carried out to identify mineral and solid phases containing major, minor, and trace elements and the mechanism of the retention of these elements in Flue Gas Desulphurisation（FGD）-gypsum samples from a coal-fired power plant under filtered water recirculation to the scrubber and forced oxidation conditions. The role of the p H and related environmental factors on the mobility of Li, Ni, Zn, As, Se, Mo, and U from FGD-gypsums for a comprehensive assessment of element leaching behaviour were also carried out. Results show that the extraction rate of the studied elements generally increases with decreasing the p H value of the FGD-gypsum leachates. The increase of the mobility of elements such as U, Se, and As in the FGD-gypsum entails the modification of their aqueous speciation in the leachates; UO2SO4, H2 Se, and HAs O2 are the aqueous complexes with the highest activities under acidic *** speciation of Zn, Li, and Ni is not affected in spite of p H changes; these elements occur as free cations and associated to SO4 ^2 in the FGD-gypsum leachates. The mobility of Cu and Mo decreases by decreasing the p H of the FGD-gypsum leachates, which might be associated to the precipitation of Cu Se2 and Mo Se2, respectively. Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry of the solid phase combined with geochemical modelling of the aqueous phase has proved useful in understanding the mobility and geochemical behaviour of elements and their partitioning into FGD-gypsum samples.

Self-assembly of highly ordered DNA origami lattices at solid-liquid interfaces by controlling cation binding and exchange

The surface-assisted hierarchical self-assembly of DNA origami lattices represents a versatile and straightforward method for the organization of functional nanoscale objects such as proteins and ***,we demonstrate that controlling the binding and exchange of different monovalent and divalent cation species at the DNA-mica interface enables the self-assembly of highly ordered DNA origami lattices on mica *** development of lattice quality and order is quantified by a detailed topological analysis of high-speed atomic force microscopy(HS-AFM)*** find that lattice formation and quality strongly depend on the monovalent cation ***^(+)is more effective than Li^(+)and k^(+)in facilitating the assembly of high-quality DNA origami lattices,because it is replacing the divalent cations at their binding sites in the DNA backbone more *** regard to divalent cations,Ca^(2+)can be displaced more easily from the backbone phosphates than Mg^(2+)and is thus superior in guiding lattice *** independently adjusting incubation time,DNA origami concentration,and cation species,we thus obtain a highly ordered DNA origami lattice with an unprecedented normalized correlation length of *** the correlation length,we use computer vision algorithms to compute the time course of different topological observables that,overall,demonstrate that replacing MgCl_(2) by CaCl_(2) enables the synthesis of DNA origami lattices with drastically increased lattice order.

Crohn's disease presenting as acute gastrointestinal hemorrhage

Severe gastrointestinal (GI) hemorrhage is a rare complication of Crohn’s disease (CD). Although several surgical and non-surgical approaches have been described over the last 2 decades this complication still poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Given the relative infrequency of severe bleeding in CD, available medical literature on this topic is mostly in the form of retrospective case series and reports. In this article we review the risk factors, diagnostic modalities and treatment options for the management of CD presenting as GI hemorrhage.

Prediction of environment variables in precision agriculture using a sparse model as data fusion strategy

Precision agriculture seeks to optimize production processes by monitoring and analyzingenvironmental variables. For example, establishing farming actions on the crop requiresanalyzing variables such as temperature, ambient humidity, soil moisture, solar irradiance,and Rainfall. Although these signals might contain valuable information, it is vital to mixup the monitored signals and analyze them as a whole to provide more accurate information than analyzing the signals separately. Unfortunately, monitoring all these variablesresults in high costs. Hence it is necessary to establish an appropriate method that allowsthe infer variables behavior without the direct measurement of all of *** paper introduces a multi-sensor data fusion technique, based on a sparse representation, to find the most straightforward and complete linear equation to predict and understand a particular variable behavior based on other monitored environmental variablesmeasurements. Moreover, this approach aims to provide an interpretable model that allowsunderstanding how these variables are combined to achieve such results. The fusion strategy explained in this manuscript follows a four-step process that includes 1. data cleaning,2. redundant variable detection, 3. dictionary generation, and 4. sparse regression. Thealgorithm requires a target variable and two highly correlated signals. It is essential to pointout that the developed method has no restrictions to specific variables. Consequently, it ispossible to replicate this method for the semiautomatic prediction of multiple critical environmental *** a case study, this work used the SML2010 data set of the UCI machine learning repository to predicted the humidity’s derivative trend function with an error rate lower than 17%and a mean absolute error lower than 6%.
