Corneal epithelial defects following vitreoretinal surgery:incidence and outcomes from the DISCOVER study

AIM:To investigate the incidence,risk factors,clinical course,and outcomes of corneal epithelial defects(CED)following vitreoretinal surgery in a prospective study ***:This was a post-hoc analysis of all participants in DISCOVER intraoperative optical coherence tomography *** with CED 1 d after surgery without intraoperative corneal debridement was defined as the postoperative CED *** who underwent intraoperative debridement were defined as intraoperative debridement *** were matched 2:1 with controls(eyes without postoperative CED)for comparative *** primary outcomes were the incidence of CED on postoperative day one and the incidence of required intraoperative *** outcomes included time to defect closure,delayed healing(>2 wk),visual acuity(VA)and presence of scarring at one year and cornea ***:This study included 856 eyes that underwent vitreoretinal *** corneal debridement was performed to 61(7.1%)subjects and postoperative CED developed spontaneously in 94(11.0%)*** factors associated with postoperative CED included prolonged surgical duration(p=0.003),diabetes mellitus(p=0.04),postoperative ocular hypotension(pprolonged surgical duration was associated with intraoperative *** defect closure time(>2 wk)was associated with corneal scar formation at the end of the 1 y in all epithelial defect subjects(pprolonged duration of surgery is the strongest factor associated with both intraoperative debridement and spontaneous postoperative *** defect closure is associated with a greater risk of corneal scarring at one *** overall rate of corneal scarring following vitrectomy is low at<2%.

Oral eplerenone for the management of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy

AIM: To examine eplerenone(Inspra, pfizer), a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, as a treatment option for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy(CSCR).METHODS: A retrospective consecutive case series was conducted for patients receiving oral eplerenone for chronic CSCR. At baseline and each follow-up visit,spectral domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT)imaging was performed, including manual measurements of the height and diameter size of subretinal fluid. The primary outcome measure was the reduction in subretinal fluid following initiation of ***: A total of 17 eyes of 13 patients treated with25 and 50 mg of oral eplerenone per day were *** fluid(SRF) decreased over time following eplerenone therapy(p = 0.007 and p =0.002, diameter and height respectively). Maximum SRF height decreased from a mean of 131.5 μm at baseline to 15.3 μm at day181+. SRF diameter decreased from an average of 2174.4μm at baseline to 46.9 μm at day 181 +. Log MAR visual acuity improved from 0.42(Snellen equivalent: 20/53) at baseline to 0.29(Snellen equivalent: 20/39) at day 181 +(p = 0.024). Central subfield thickness(CST) decreased from 339.5 μm at baseline to 270.3 μm at day 181+(p = 0.029).CONCLUSION: Eplerenone therapy resulted in significant anatomic and visual improvements in eyes with chronic CSCR.

Diffuse visible light was directed to the sample and the intensity of the light transmitted to the opposite side of the sample was measured through a diffusing lens using a phototransistor, Light transmission was found to decrease with decreasing particle size and with increasing packing density, There was a correlation, though somewhat irregular, between light transmission and particle size for glass ballotini and microcrystalline cellulose pellets, and a strong near-linear correlation between light transmission and particle size for theophylline granules, The effect of packing density on light transmission was significant, Differentiating the composition of binary blends of microcrystalline cellulose pellets and glass ballotini and blends of theophylline granules was found possible on the basis of light transmission, The method proposed showed potential as a rapid, simple and inexpensive analytical tool for basic process diagnostics,

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the definition of a European perspective on Digital Earth(DE),identify some actions that can contribute to raise the awareness of DE in the European context and thus strengthen the European contribution to the International Society for Digital Earth(ISDE).The paper identifies opportunities and synergies with the current policy priorities in Europe(Europe 2020,Innovation Union and Digital Agenda)and highlights a number of key areas to advance the development of DE from a European perspective:(1)integrating scientific research into DE;(2)exploiting the Observation Web with human-centred sensing;and(3)governance,including the establishment of stronger linkages across the European landscape of funding streams and *** paper is offered also as a contribution to the development of this new vision of DE to be presented at the next International DE Conference in perth,Australia,in August *** global recognition of this new vision will then reinforce the European component and build a positive feedback loop for the further implementation of DE across the globe.

Antifibrogenic effects of vitamin D derivatives on mouse pancreatic stellate cells

AIM To study the molecular effects of three different D-vitamins, vitamin D2, vitamin D3 and calcipotriol, in pancreatic stellate cells(pSCs).METHODS Quiescent pSCs were isolated from mouse pancreas and activated in vitro by seeding on plastic surfaces. The cells were exposed to D-vitamins as primary cultures(early-activated pSCs) and upon re-culturing(fullyactivated cells). Exhibition of vitamin A-containing lipid droplets was visualized by oil-red staining. Expression of α-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA), a marker of pSC activation, was monitored by immunofluorescence and immunoblot analysis. The rate of DNA synthesis was quantified by 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine(Brd U) incorporation assays. Real-time pCR was employed to monitor gene expression, and protein levels of interleukin-6(IL-6) were measured by ELISA. Uptake of proline was determined using 18 *** Sustained culture of originally quiescent pSCs inducedcell proliferation, loss of lipid droplets and exhibition of stress fibers, indicating cell activation. When added to pSCs in primary culture, all three D-vitamins diminished expression of α-SMA(to 32%-39% of the level of control cells; p pids(scores from 1.97-2.15 on a scale from 0-3; controls: 1.49; p poration of Brd U remained unaffected under both experimental conditions. Treatment of re-cultured pSCs with D-vitamins was associated with lower expression of IL-6(-42% to-49%; p protein level) and increased expression of the vitamin D receptor gene(209%-321% vs controls; p pression of transforming growth factor-β1 and collagen type 1(chain α1). Effectiveness of Bacterial and Fungal Isolates to Control <i>phoma lingam</i>on Oilseed Rape <i>Brassica napus</i>

Blackleg disease caused by phoma lingam is an important disease of oil seed rape (Brassica napus) causing losses up to 95%. The efficacy of microbial antagonists against p. lingam in greenhouse was tested. Serratia plymuthica HRO-C48 and Gliocladium catenulatum J1446 were able to reduce the disease intensity of OSR cotelydones infested with p. lingam at rates 44% and 52% respectively. The reduction of the infestation of the root collar in BBCH14/15 was evaluated as well. plants treated with a suspension of the antagonists (2 × 105 cfu/plant) and inoculated with either pycnidiospore suspension (2 × 107 cfu/ml) or agar disks grown with p. lingam mycelium, showed a reduced infestation rate of 53% - 93% in the presence of S. plymuthica and 46% - 77% in the presence of G. catenulatum. The efficacy of the antagonist depends highly on their concentration inside OSR seeds. Below 105 cfu/seed no significant difference was recorded between control untreated and infested plants.

purpose: To examine whether standardized, preoperative evaluation of pupil siz es can predict the risk of night vision visual disturbances after bilateral lase r in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopia. Methods: A prospective study was ca rried out involving 46 patients who underwent bilateral LASIK for myopia. pupil sizes were measured before surgery using an infrared pupillometer under standard ized settings. pre-and postoperative refraction and best spectacle-corrected v isual acuity (BSCVA) were registered. At the 3-month follow-up visit, the pati ents completed a questionnaire regarding night vision pre-and postoperatively. Results: The mean bilateral, spherical equivalent refraction (SE) was-8.76 D (r ange 6.32 to-12.0 D) preoperatively, and-1.69 D (range 0 to-4.38 D) postopera tively. The mean bilateral BSCVA was not changed by the operations. We found a s ignificant correlation between large scotopic pupil sizes and the impression of worsened night vision (p postoperatively was also found (p pupil size measured preoperatively is correlated with an i ncreased frequency of subjectively experienced post-LASIK visual disturbances d uring scotopic conditions. We recommend preoperative evaluation of pupils size in all patient s prior to LASIK surgery.
