BIOCOMPATIBILITY OF A PDMS-COATED MICRO-DEVICE:BLADDER VOLUME MONITORING SENSOR

We evaluated the biocompatibility of a dimethylpolysiloxane-coated micro-device which had been designed for monitoring real-time bladder volume in previous studies. The extract assay with dimethylpolysiloxane which had been used for coating the micro-device to measure the bladder volume was performed as an in vitro cytotoxicity test. For in vivo biocompatibility testing, the inflammatory responses around the implantation site of the micro-device in subcutaneous tissue of rat were assessed by light microscope with H＆E stain and fluorescence microscope with ED1 stain and von Willebrand factor stain. The averages of cell viability in dimethylpolysiloxane group were 84.6% and 82.3% at 24 h and 72 h incubation, respectively. The qualitative evaluations with light and fluorescence microscope revealed that the inflammatory changes peaked during 2 weeks but almost disappeared at 4 weeks after implantation of devices. The quantitative evaluations for granulation layer formation and neovascularization showed that the thickness of the layer in dimethylpolysiloxane group peaked during 2 weeks but it came to be stabilized at 4 weeks as thin as at 2 weeks in control group, and the frequency of neovascularization was higher in dimethylpolysiloxane group than in control group but it was not increased with time. The dimethylpolysiloxane-coated micro-device is thought be a reliable bio-medical device.

Oncological safety of use of ultrasonic activated shears in gastric cancer surgery: Long-term results of randomized controlled trial

Objective： Ultrasonically activated shears （UAS） have been applied in open gastric surgeries with no or little evidence. It was previously reported about the surgical outcome and effectiveness of UAS based on a randomized controlled trial of 256 patients with gastric cancer. We aimed to clarify the long-term oncological safety of the use of UAS in the aspect of overall survival and ***： Gastric cancer patients who underwent gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the conventional surgery group （n=125） or the UAS group （n=128）. Survival, recurrence and long-term postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. The median follow-up period was 56 ***： Gastric cancer-related death was higher in patients of the UAS group compared with the conventional group （P=0.019）. Overall survival rates stratified by stage were not significantly different between the two groups （P=0.170）. Disease-free survival rates stratified by stage and recurrence-free survival rates of gastric cancer were similar between the conventional group and the UAS group （P=0.313 and 0.199, respectively）. The postoperative complication rate was not significantly different between the groups （P=1.000）. Conclusions： It is suggested that the use of UAS in gastrectomy for gastric cancer showed oncologically acceptable safety compared with conventional electric instruments even in long-term period.

A comparison of short-term postoperative outcomes including nutritional status between gastrectomy with simultaneous cholecystectomy and gastrectomy only in patients with gastric cancer

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the effect of simultaneous cholecystectomy on the short-term postoperative outcomes and nutritional status in patients with gastric ***: We retrospectively reviewed data from 4,820 patients with gastric cancer who underwent gastrectomy from January 2011 to December 2016. Patients who underwent only gastrectomy(N=4,578) were matched to those who underwent simultaneous cholecystectomy during gastrectomy(N=242) at a 1:1 ratio using propensity score matching analysis. The nutritional status and inflammatory responses preoperatively and postoperatively and postoperative outcomes were compared between the ***: The simultaneous cholecystectomy group showed more intraoperative blood loss and a longer operative time than the gastrectomy only group [150.0(100.0, 200.0) m L vs. 100.0(100.0, 200.0) m L, P=0.006;176.0(150.0,210.0) min vs. 155.0(128.0, 188.0) min, Phocyte count, total protein level, albumin level, fasting glucose level,and prognostic nutritional index excluding the cholesterol level were not significantly different between the groups,and their changing patterns were similar. Although the cholesterol level was significantly lower in the simultaneous cholecystectomy group than in the gastrectomy only group at all follow-up points, the mean value of the decreased cholesterol level was within normal ***: In gastric cancer patients with gallbladder disease, simultaneous cholecystectomy is safe and not associated with additional nutritional loss.

An analysis of the recent major security incidents related to industrial control systems,revealed that most had been caused by company ***,enterprise security management systems have been developed to focus on companies’***,several hacking incidents,involving major companies and public/financial institutions,were actually attempted by the cooperative firms or the outsourced manpower undertaking maintenance ***,institutions that operate industrial control systems(ICSs)associated with critical national infrastructures,such as traffic or energy,have contracted several cooperative ***,ICT’s importance is gradually increasing,due to outsourcing,and is the most vulnerable factor in *** paper proposes a virtualized security management scheme for the resident cooperative firms in the industrial control *** such companies often cannot afford adequate investment in security,the scheme is to let an ICS company provide the virtualized *** of its merits is the convenience of controlling a VDI server at the *** cooperative firms were classified,based on their respective security levels,and statistics were collected throughout a four-year period for the *** paper analyzes the policies and virtualization systems that have been applied to the security of the partner companies,which engaged in ICS security.A suitable model for ICS security was then proposed by analyzing their effects on the system efficiencies,based on the comparisons of the security inspection results obtained before and after *** proposed system is expected to contribute to industrial safety.

Adhesion and Suction Functions of the Tip Region of a Nectar-drinking Butterfly Proboscis

In this study, we investigated the dynamic functions of the tip region of the butterfly proboscis through which liquid is sucked during liquid feeding. The microstructures and flow patterns in the tip region of the proboscis were in vivo analyzed. The tip region can be divided into two functional sections： namely adhesion and suction sections. The liquid adheres to the adhesion section during liquid suction. Although the tip region has numerous slits connected to food canal of the proboscis, liquid is mainly sucked through the suction section, which section is submerged in the fluid pulled by the adhesion section and then successfully imbibes liquid. To check the dynamic functions of the tip region, we fabricated a suction tip model having adhesion and suction parts. The in vitro model experiments show that the hydrophilicity of the adhesion part and the existence of the suction inlet improve the liquid uptake driven by a suction pump. This study may provide insights for the biomimetic design of nectar-feeding butterflies.

Biomaterial-based drug delivery systems have been developed to expedite cartilage regeneration;however,challenges related to drug recovery,validation,and efficient drug delivery *** instance,compound K(CK)is a major metabolite of ginsenosides that is known to protect against joint degeneration by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines and the activation of immune ***,its effects on cartilage degradation and tissue regeneration remain ***,tissue-adhesive drug delivery depots that stably adhere to cartilage defects are required for CK *** this study,CK-loaded adhesive patches were reported to seal cartilage defects and deliver CK to defect sites,preventing cartilage degradation and accelerating cartilage tissue *** patches are stable and suitable for application in surgical procedures under physiological conditions and show excellent adhesiveness to cartilage *** addition,there were no significant differences in the adhesive polymeric networks before and after CK ***-loaded hydrocaffeic acid-conjugated chitosan patches significantly inhibited the stimulation of cartilage-degrading enzymes and apoptosis in osteoarthritic cartilage by releasing CK in cartilage ***,the NFkB signaling pathway of released CK from the adhesive patches in the treatment of osteoarthritis is ***,the CK-loaded adhesive patches are expected to significantly contribute to cartilage regeneration.

The effects of lntcr-ckxttxxk insertion on the performance of a hollow--electrode plasma torch have been investigated by numerical *** results revealed that when inter-dcctrodes arc inserted,the arc voltages and plasma powers increase due to the increase in the arc *** addition,it was predicted that thermal efficiency can be improved with the increase in plasma power by injecting plasma gases through the gaps between *** unique effects of inter-electrode insertion arc a result of the plasma temperatures adjusting themselves to increase arc voltages when the arc column is contracted radially by increasing gas-flow rate or decreasing inter-electrcxk diameter.

A comparative study of interface reconstruction algorithms in molten metal flow

In the present research,two numerical schemes for improving the accuracy of the solution in the flow simulation of molten metal were *** method is the Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation(PLIC) method and the other is the Donor-Acceptor(D-A) *** verify the module of the interface reconstruction algorithms,simple problems were *** these validations,the accuracy and efficiency of these two methods were compared by simulating various real *** the numerical simulation of free surface flow,it is possible for the PLIC method to track very accurately the interface between *** PLIC method,however,has the weak point in that a lot of computational time is required,though it shows the more accurate interface *** Donor-Acceptor method has enough effectiveness in the macro-observation of a mold filling sequence though it shows inferior ***,for the problems that need the accurate solution,PLIC is more appropriate than *** accuracy may cause less efficiency in numerical *** method between D-A method and PLIC method should be chosen depends on the product.
