Effect of silymarin on biochemical indicators in patients with liver disease: systematic review with meta-analysis

To evaluate the effect of silymarin on the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (γGT) in patients with liver diseases. METHODSA systematic review with meta-analysis of ramdomized and controlled clinical trials was performed, evaluating the effects of sylimarin in patients with hepatic diseases, published by January 31, 2016. Clinical trials were sought on the basis of The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials in the Cochrane Library, PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Lilacs and Clinical Trials. The trials with adult and elderly patients of both sexes, with Liver Diseases who took oral silymarin supplementation, as extract or isolated, as well as Silymarin combined with other nutrients, were included. The trials should provide information about the intervention, such as dosages and detailing of the product used, besides the mean and standard deviation of serum levels of ALT, AST and γGT of the baseline and at the end of the intervention. RESULTSAn amount of 10904 publications were identified. From those, only 17 were included in the systematic review and 6 in the meta-analysis, according to the used selection criteria. In this meta-analysis, the results indicated a reduction of 0.26 IU/mL (95%CI: -0.46-0.07, P = 0.007) at the level of ALT and 0.53 IU/mL (95%CI: -0.74-0.32, P = 0.000) at the serum levels of AST after using the silymarin, both, statistically significant, but with no clinical relevance. There was no significant change in the γGT levels. Subgroup analyzes were also performed for the biochemical markers in relation to the type of intervention, whether silymarin isolated or associated with other nutrients and the time of intervention (whether ≥ 6 mo or < 6 mo). Significant differences were not found. The evaluated studies presented a high degree of heterogeneity and low methodological quality in the carried out analysis. The presence of CD8 T cell responses to tumor associated antigens have been reported in patients with different malignancies. However, there is very little inf ormation on a comparable CD8 and CD4 T cell response to a tumor antigen in liver cancer patients. Here, we re-examine the kinetic and the pattern of T helper 1 and cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses to alpha-fetoprotein (AFP),a tumor rejection antigen in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Then, we discuss the possibility of using AFP-based immunotherapy in combination with necrotizing treatments in HCC patients.

Aim: The elemental composition of the epididymal luminal fluid (ELF) in adult goat ( Capra indica) was investigat-ed. Methods: ELF was collected by micropuncture from twelve sites along the epididymal duct. The elementalcontents was analyzed with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) emission spectroscopy, a microanalytical technique thatcan simultaneously measure many elements in minute volumes of sample. The Na and K concentrations were determinedby flame photometry. Results: ICP spectroscopy showed the presence of copper, calcium, nickel, iron, magne-sium, chromium, titanium and zinc in ELF, with fluctuating levels at different sites along the length of the ***, cobalt, lead and manganese were not fotmd. The Na^+ / K^+ ratio was seen to be higher at the initial seg-ments of the epididymis and lower at the distal. Conclusion: It is proposed that the observed characteristic distribu-tion of elements in ELF may have far reaching implications in sperm maturation and storage known to occur in the epi-didymis. Art and technology interactions in Islamic and Check fa Christian context: Historical approach to architectural globalization

Efficie nt in teracti on betwee n art and tech no logy en abled Islamic architecture to actively experience early globalization, but today's separation between these domains and technological hegemony have presented challenges to Islamic architecture. Accordingly, this research was aimed at illuminating art and technology interactions in Islamic architecture during early globalization when it flourished along with Christian architecture. To this end, logical reasoning and qualitative data an alysis were performed in parallel on 12 chai ns of mostly worshipone nted artworks, such as mosques and churches. The results indicated that art and tech no logy interactions in Islamic and Christian architecture were underlain by the same nature and seque ntial pattern of begi nning from primitive tech no logy and endi ng with inn ovative technology (art). The cultural and technological value of these architectural styles eventually crossed geographical boundaries. Therefore, the beneficial interactions between art and technology enabled Islamic and Christian architecture to participate in globalization through the con veya nee of their value to other regi ons eve n as d if fere nces existed in the measures implemented for such transmission.

On the impact of grinding conditions in the flotation of semi-soluble salt-type mineral-containing ores driven by surface or particle geometry effects?

Grinding and flotation processes are often studied independently, despite the well-established grinding influence on flotation performance, which affects not only particle size and thus liberation but also shape and leads to complex changes in pulp chemistry affecting the particle surface properties relevant for selective bubble attachment. Yet, no study jointly investigated these possible causes and many are limited to single mineral flotation. We relate grinding conditions to changes in pulp chemistry and particle surface properties and assess their impact on upgrading. We studied three non-sulfide ores with different feed grades and valuables: scheelite, apatite, and fluorite. These were dry-, wet-, and wet conditionedground before flotation in a laboratory mechanical cell. Results were evaluated with bulk-and particle-specific methodologies. The selectivity of the process is higher after dry grinding for the fluorite and apatite ores and irrelevant for the scheelite ore. Variations in flotation kinetics of individual particles associated to their size and shape are not sufficient to explain these results. The higher concentration of Ca2+and Mg2+observed in the pulp after wet grinding, altering particle surface properties, better explains the phenomenon. Additionally, we demonstrate how particle shape impacts are system specific and related to both entrainment and true flotation.

Purpose This study aimed to compare the physical attributes of male and female Volleyball and Beach Volleyball *** Fifty-five athletes from Volleyball(Male,n=19,age 27.3±6.1 years,body mass 93.2±9.9 kg,and height 196.8±7.4 cm and Female,n=16,age 28.0±5.6 years,body mass 76.9±8.8 kg,and height 179.9±5.8 cm)and Beach Volleyball(Male,n=10,age 26.8±3.4 years,body mass 92.9±9.9 kg,and height 195.3±7.9 cm and Female,n=10,age 31.1±6.2 years,body mass 74.6±8.5 kg,and height 180.9±6.0 cm)participated in the *** tests were performed in a single visit to the laboratory in the following order:body composition,vertical jump(squat and countermovement jump),isokinetic(knees and shoulders),and cardiopulmonary exercise *** variables were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA(Sex and Sport factors)for independent *** Beach Volleyball athletes presented lower body fat(P=0.03;ES=0.32)and higher maximal cardiorespiratory variables(VO2,HR,and vVO2max).Only flexion bilateral difference(knee)at 60°/s was affected by sex(P=0.002;ES=0.63).For shoulders,only dominant external/internal rotation ratio presented a significant interaction for sport and sex(P=0.05;ES=0.28).Regarding vertical jumps,Volleyball male players presented a greater elastic index than BV male players(P=0.002,ES=0.67).Conclusion Beach Volleyball players are thinner and have better cardiorespiratory fitness than Volleyball ***,they presented less use of elastic properties for vertical jumping and have a greater muscle imbalance in the hamstrings than Volleyball players.

Characterization of the Topography and Wettability of English Weed Leaves and Biomimetic Replicas

The topography and wettability of the underside of English weed （Oxalis pes-caprae） leaves and of their biomimetic replicas are investigated. Polyvinyl siloxane molds were cast from the leaves and then filled with an epoxy pre-polymer to produce replicas. The particular topographical structures of leaves and replicas were evaluated by optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy （SEM） analysis. The static wettability of leaves and replicas was assessed by contact angle measurements, while the dynamic wettability was characterized by estimating contact angle hysteresis and studying the dynamic behavior of impacting water droplets. A smooth glass slip and its replica were used as control surfaces. The replica moulding method used was able to transfer the characteristic pattern of irregular 100 μm - 200 μm × 60 μm convex papillae interspersed with stomata of the original leaf to the epoxy replicas. The static contact angle of 143°± 3° and the contact angle hysteresis of 2~ indicate that the underside of the English weed leaf is close to superhydrophobic. The lower contact angles （130° ± 4°） and higher hysteresis （31°） observed for the replica when compared with the original leaves were associated to an inaccurate replication of the chemistry and structures of the three-dimensional wax projections covering the plant surface. Also, trichomes in the original leaves could not be accurately reproduced due to their flexibility and fragility. Differences in wetting behavior were also evident from droplet impact experiments, with rebound regimes prevailing in the original leaves and regimes characterized by higher adhesion and larger dissipation predominating in the replicas. Nevertheless, the morphological features of the leaf transferred to the replica were sufficient to promote a clear hydrophobic behavior of the replica when compared with the smooth epoxy reference surface.

Evaluation of Physicochemical and Functional Properties of Protein Recovered Obtaining from Whitemouth Croaker (<i>Micropogonias furnieri</i>) Byproducts

Proteins recovered were obtained from Whitemouth Croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) byproducts and their physico-chemical and functional properties were evaluated. The proximate composition, presented 8.64% ± 0.10% of moisture, 85.33% ± 0.12% of protein, 2.69% ± 0.09% of ashes and 2.16% ± 0.12% of lipids, in dry basis. The highest solubility was obtained in pH 11 (93.24%), the maximum water holding capacity was presented at pH 11 (25.71 mL H2O/gprotein), the oil holding capacity was 13.71 mL/gprotein and the digestibility in vitro was 91.32% ± 0.15%. The electro-phoretic profile was observed typical of the myofibrillar proteins, with the appearance of the heavy chain of myosin (220 kDa) and actin (50 kDa). The results show that the products of low commercial value of fish that are usually used for the production of animal feed or simply discarded, contributing to environmental pollution, may be used to produce products with a greater added value.

Introduction: Medical literature shows consistent data on the use of botulinum toxin for the treatment of drooling, especially in patients with neurological disorder. However, any trial evaluated the reduction of sialorrhea through laryngotracheoscopy. Objective: To evaluate the reduction of salivation and aspiration in children with cerebral palsy submitted to intraparotid injection of botulinum toxin. Methods: A prospective cohort study including 31 pediatric patients with cerebral palsy who complained of sialorrhea and were submitted to an intraparotid injection of botulinum toxin type A. It was analysed the reduction of the number of bibs and the amount of saliva in the larynx and trachea through a laryngotracheoscopic examination. Results: There was a reduction in the number of bibs from 7.35 to 4 after application of BoNT/A, with p-value Conclusion: Application of botulinum toxin type A is a good method for temporary control of salivation in children with neurological disorders.
