Does drought stress modify the effects of plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria on an aboveground chewing herbivore？

Soil microbes have important effects on the interactions of plants with their environment, by promoting plant growth, inducing resistance to pests or by conferring tolerance to abiotic stress. However, their effects are variable and the factors responsible for this variation are mainly unknown. Our aim was to assess how drought stress modifies the effect of the nonpathogenic rhizobacterium Pseudomonas simiae WCS417r on plant growth and resistance against the generalist leaf-chewing caterpillar Mamestra brassicae. We studied Arabidopsis tha/iana Col-0 plants, as well as mutants altered in the biosyn- thesis of the phytohormones jasmonic acid （JA） and abscisic acid （ABA）. Caterpillars did not prefer rhizobacteria-treated plants, independently of drought stress. rhizobacteria colonization had a variable effect on caterpillar performance, which ranged from positive in one experiment to neutral in a second one. Drought had a consistent negative effect on herbivore performance; however, it did not modify the effect of rhizobacteria on herbivore performance. The effect of drought on herbivore performance was JA-mediated （confirmed with the use of the dde2-2 mutant）, but it was still present in the ABA-deficient mutant aba2-1. Plant biomass was reduced by both drought and herbivory but it was enhanced by rhizobacterial colonization. Pseudomonas simiae WCS417r is able to promote plant growth even when plants are suffering herbivory. Nevertheless, the microbial effect on the herbivore is variable, independently of drought stress. To get the best possible outcome from the rhizobacteria-plant mutualism it is important to understand which other factors may be responsible for its context-dependency.

Malnutrition is described as a state of insufficient intake of energy,protein and other nutrients leading to changes in body composition(weight loss,reduced fat-free mass)as well as adverse functional and clinical outcomes.[1]Depending on the assessments and definition used,the prevalence in older patients ranges between 12%in communitydwelling adults to 60%of patients in geriatric care facilities.[2–5]Older populations are at high risk of nutritional deficiencies because of risk factors such as multimorbidity,polypharmacy,cognitive and physical decline,poor appetite,depressive syndromes and socioeconomic changes.[4,6].

Primary biliary cirrhosis(PBC),primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC)and autoimmune hepatitis(AIH)are the major forms of autoimmune liver diseases each characterized by the destruction of a specific liver cell type and the presence of differing *** took a proteomic approach utilizing in situ matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry(MALDI MS)to obtain profiles directly from liver samples of patients with PBC,PSC,AIH and *** ability to precisely localize the region for acquisition of MALDI MS allowed us to obtain profiles from bile ducts,inflammatory infiltrates and hepatocytes from each biopsy *** tools developed to identify peaks and compare peaks across diseases and cell types were used to develop models to classify the *** an initial set of testing samples from PBC patients and controls,we identified unique peaks present in bile ducts,inflammatory infiltrates and hepatocytes that could classify samples in a validation cohort with 88–91%***,profiles of PSC and AIH did not differ significantly from *** of proteins in these peaks may represent novel autoantigens or effector *** findings illustrate the potential of a proteomic approach to autoimmune diseases with in situ MALDI MS.

Background and purpose Non-traditional risk factors such as chronic inflammation,oxidative stress and thrombogenic factors are believed to contribute to the excess stroke risk in chronic kidney disease(CKD)by triggering vascular injury and endothelial *** aimed to determine how well a panel of biomarkers representative of these factors would correlate with estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFr)in patients with recent transient ischaemic attack(TIA)or *** also investigated whether eGFr would confound previously reported associations between biomarkers and *** We studied a panel of 16 blood biomarkers related to inflammation,thrombosis,atherogenesis and cardiac or neuronal cell damage in TIA or ischaemic stroke in a population-based study(Oxford Vascular Study).Biomarker levels were log-transformed and correlated with eGFr,adjusted for *** proportional hazard models were used for survival *** Among 1297 patients with TIA or stroke,52.7%(n=684)of patients had CKD(eGFrre was a moderate correlation between log-eGFr and the log-transformed soluble tumour necrosis factor receptor-1(r^(2)=0.21),attenuating with adjustment for age(r^(2)=0.12).There were moderate-to strong correlations with markers of cardiac injury,N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide and heart-type fatty acid binding protein(hFABP,r2=0.14 and 0.34,respectively).The strongest correlation after adjustment for age was between hFABP and eGFr(r^(2)=0.20).Adjusting for eGFr did not impact any biomarker associations with *** Correlations between biomarkers related to inflammation and thrombosis with renal dysfunction in the setting of cerebrovascular events were generally modest after adjustment for age,suggesting that putative risk factors such as chronic inflammation or coagulopathy are unlikely to be important stroke mechanisms in patients with CKD.

We carried out transcriptional profiling analysis in 10-d-old Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings treated with oligogalacturonides （OGs）, oligosaccharides derived from the plant cell wall, or the bacterial flagellin peptide Fig22, general elicitors of the basal defense response in plants. Although detected by different receptors, both OGs and Fig22 trigger a fast and transient response that is both similar and comprehensive, and characterized by activation of early stages of multiple defense signaling pathways, particularly JA-associated processes. However, the response to Fig22 is stronger in both the number of genes differentially expressed and the amplitude of change. The magnitude of induction of individual genes is in both cases dose-dependent, but, even at very high concentrations, OGs do not induce a response that is as comprehensive as that seen with Fig22. While high doses of either microbe-associated molecular pattern （MAMP） elicit a late response that includes activation of senescence processes, SA-dependent secretory pathway genes and Pr1 expres- sion are substantially induced only by Fig22. These results suggest a lower threshold for activation of early responses than for sustained or SA-mediated late defenses. Expression patterns of amino-cyclopropane-carboxylate synthase genes also implicate ethylene biosynthesis in regulation of the late innate immune response.

Seasonal tropical cyclone(TC)forecasting has evolved substantially since its commencement in the early ***,present operational seasonal TC forecasting services still do not meet the requirements of society and stakeholders:current operational products are mainly basin-scale information,while more detailed sub-basin scale information such as potential risks of TC landfall is anticipated for decision *** fill this gap and make the TC science and services move forward,this paper reviews recent research and development in seasonal tropical cyclone(TC)*** particular,this paper features new research topics on seasonal TC predictability in neutral conditions of El Ni˜no–Southern Oscillation(ENSO),emerging forecasting techniques of seasonal TC activity including Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence,and multi-annual TC *** also review the skill of forecast systems at predicting landfalling statistics for certain regions of the North Atlantic,Western North Pacific and South Indian oceans and discuss the gap that remains between current products and potential user's *** knowledge and advanced forecasting techniques are expected to further enhance the capability of seasonal TC forecasting and lead to more actionable and fit-for-purpose products.
