Hatching asynchrony in birds is considered an adaptation to facilitate brood reduction because under conditions of food scarcity, the smallest nestling usually dies soon after hatching, thereby minimizing parental effort. However, in species with extreme hatching asynchrony, the last hatchlings paradoxically experience a very low probability of survival and death can take so long that it can hardly be considered an adaptation. Here, we propose and experimentally tested a new adaptive hypothesis explaining the brood reduction paradox, namely the“Male Manipulation Hypothesis”. Our hypothesis suggests that by inducing asynchronous hatching,females increase the feeding requirements of the brood, which will induce males to increase provisioning effort. In addition, females may extend the period of male manipulation by feeding the smallest nestling just enough to sustain life. Our study showed that male common blackbirds(Turdus merula) increased their effort(i.e., number of food items per hour) in experimental asynchronous broods compared to synchronous broods, while females reduced their contribution, as predicted by the hypothesis.

AIM:To study the blood-brain barrier integrity,brain edema, animal behavior and ammonia plasma levels in prehepatic portal hypertensive rats with and without acute liver intoxication. METHODS:Adults male Wistar rats were divided into four *** Ⅰ:sham operation;Ⅱ:Prehepatic portal hypertension,produced by partial portal vein ligation;Ⅲ: Acetaminophen intoxication and Ⅳ:Prehepatic portal hypertension plus *** was administered to produce acute hepatic *** pressure,liver serum enzymes and ammonia plasma levels were *** cortex water content was registered and trypan blue was utilized to study blood brain barrier *** and behavioral tests were recorded. RESULTS:Portal hypertension was significantly elevated in groups Ⅱ and Ⅳ.Uver enzymes and ammonia plasma levels were increased in groups Ⅱ,Ⅲ and Ⅳ.Prehepatic portal hypertension (group Ⅱ),acetaminophen intoxication (group Ⅲ) and both (group Ⅳ) had changes in the blood brain-barrier integrity (trypan blue) and *** edema was present in rats with acute hepatic injury in groups Ⅲ and Ⅳ.Behavioral test (rota rod) was altered in group Ⅳ. CONCLUSION:These results suggest the possibility of another pathway for cortical edema production because blood brain barrier was altered (vasogenic) and hyperammonemia was registered (oltotoxic).Group Ⅳ,with behavioral altered test,can be considered as a model for study at an early stage of portal-systemic encephalopathy.

Background:The search for alternatives to antibiotics in pig production has increased the interest in natural resources with antimicrobial properties,such as medium-chain fatty acids(MCFA)as in-feed *** study evaluated the potential of a novel blend of MCFA salts(DIC)from distilled coconut oil with a lauric acid content to reduce enteropathogens and control intestinal diseases around *** experimental disease models were implemented in early-weaned piglets,consisting of two oral challenges:Salmonella Typhimurium(1.2×10~8 CFU)or enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC)F4(1.5×10~9 CFU).The parameters assessed were:animal performance,clinical signs,pathogen excretion,intestinal fermentation,immune-inflammatory response,and intestinal ***:The Salmonella challenge promoted an acute course of diarrhea,with most of the parameters responding to the challenge,whereas the ETEC F4 challenge promoted a mild clinical course.A consistent antipathogenic effect of DIC was observed in both trials in the hindgut,with reductions in Salmonella *** counts in the cecum(P=0.03)on d 8 post-inoculation(PI)(Salmonella trial),and of enterobacteria and total coliform counts in the ileum and colon(P<0.10)on d 8 PI(ETEC F4 trial).When analyzing the entire colonic microbiota(16 S rRNA gene sequencing),this additive tended(P=0.13)to reduce the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and enriched Fibrobacteres after the Salmonella *** the ETEC F4 challenge,DIC prompted structural changes in the ecosystem with increases in Dialister,and a trend(P=0.14)to increase the Veillonellaceae *** parameters such as the intestinal fermentation products or serum pro-inflammatory mediators were not modified by DIC supplementation,nor were the histological *** the intraepithelial lymphocyte(IEL)counts were lowered by DIC in animals challenged with Salmonella(P=0.07).With ETEC F4,the IEL counts were higher with DIC on d 8 PI(P=0.08).Conclusions:This study c

BACKGROUND The prevalence of heart failure(HF)increases with age,and it is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death in older ***,there are little data on in-hospital mortality in patients with HF≥75 years in *** A retrospective analysis of the Spanish Minimum Basic Data Set was performed,including all HF episodes discharged from public hospitals in Spain between 2016 and *** was performed using the International Classification of Diseases,10th ***≥75 years with HF as the principal diagnosis were *** calculated:(1)the crude in-hospital mortality rate and its distribution according to age and sex;(2)the risk-standardized in-hospital mortality ratio;and(3)the association between in-hospital mortality and the availability of an intensive cardiac care unit(ICCU)in the *** We included 354,792 HF episodes of patients over 75 *** mean age was 85.2±5.5 years,and 59.2%of patients were *** most frequent comorbidities were renal failure(46.1%),diabetes mellitus(35.5%),valvular disease(33.9%),cardiorespiratory failure(29.8%),and hypertension(26.9%).In-hospital mortality was 12.7%,and increased with age[odds ratio(OR)=1.07,95%CI:1.07–1.07,P<0.001]and was lower in women(OR=0.96,95%CI:0.92–0.97,P<0.001).The main predictors of mortality were the presence of cardiogenic shock(OR=19.5,95%CI:16.8–22.7,P<0.001),stroke(OR=3.5,95%CI:3.0–4.0,P<0.001)and advanced cancer(OR=2.6,95%CI:2.5–2.8,P<0.001).In hospitals with ICCU,the in-hospital risk-adjusted mortality tended to be lower(OR=0.85,95%CI:0.72–1.00,P=0.053).CONCLUSIONS In-hospital mortality in patients with HF≥75 years between 2016 and 2019 was 12.7%,higher in males and elderly *** main predictors of mortality were cardiogenic shock,stroke,and advanced *** was a trend toward lower mortality in centers with an ICCU.

Recent research has challenged the idea that cervid antlers are such costly traits,supporting the assertion early-life antler investment is an honest signal of adult phenotypic ***,inferences were made based on antler measurements while growing(velvet)and thus,studies on fully-formed clean antlers are needed to avoid possible bias caused by the inter-individual variation in antler growth *** studied a semi-captive population of European roe deer inhabiting a sub-Mediterranean area(Valsemana research station)and living under optimal conditions(ad libitum food supply and veterinary care).Based on repeated measurements taken from 146 individuals,we assessed whether allocation to secondary sexual traits during early life affected body mass or antler development during ***,we evaluated which body measurements better predicted future male ***,using 488 individuals,we described age-class-specific variation in male body measurements and assessed the decline in antler size between adult and senescent stages(*** of senescence).Results agree with the assertion that there is no negative effect of a high investment in antler during early life on adult antler size or body mass,but we suggest the use of clean antlers as a more robust and reliable *** variables that better predicted body mass during adulthood were yearling body mass and body size at 6 *** score between 10 and 18 months resulted in the best indicator of adult antler ***,we support the idea that the magnitude of senescence in antler size is smaller in environments with higher resource availability during winter.

Tree height (H) in a natural stand or forest plantation is a fundamental variable in management, and the use of mathematical expressions that estimate H as a function of diameter at breast height (d) or variables at the stand level is a valuable support tool in forest inventories. The objective was to fit and propose a generalized H-d model for Pinus montezumae and Pinus pseudostrobus established in forest plantations of Nuevo San juan Parangaricutiro, Michoacan, Mexico. Using nonlinear least squares (NLS), 10 generalized H-d models were fitted to 883 and 1226 pairs of H-d data from Pinus montezumae and Pinus pseudostrobus, respectively. The best model was refitted with the maximum likelihood mixed effects model (MEM) approach by including the site as a classification variable and a known variance structure. The Wang and Tang equation was selected as the best model with NLS;the MEM with an additive effect on two of its parameters and an exponential variance function improved the fit statistics for Pinus montezumae and Pinus pseudostrobus, respectively. The model validation showed equality of means among the estimates for both species and an independent subsample. The calibration of the MEM at the plot level was efficient and might increase the applicability of these results. The inclusion of dominant height in the MEM approach helped to reduce bias in the estimates and also to better explain the variability among plots.

The objective of this study was to evaluate supplemental organic chromium（Cr） to finishing lambs on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality. Eighteen Suffolk lambs（age（4.5±0.2） mon;（25.8±3.6） kg body weight（BW）） were randomly assigned to three levels of supplemental organic Cr（0.0, 0.2 and 0.4 mg kg^–1 dry matter（DM）） in a complete random design. Growth performance was evaluated for 70 d, and then lambs were slaughtered to study carcass characteristics and chemical composition of meat. Orthogonal contrasts were performed（contrast one-average level 0.2 ppm Cr vs. average level 0.4 ppm Cr; contrast two-level 0 vs. average levels（0.2＋0.4） ppm Cr）. Orthogonal polynomials were used to estimate the linear and quadratic effects of Cr concentrations. Growth and carcass performance were not affected by supplemental organic Cr. Muscle conformation and leg perimeter linearly increased（P〈0.05） as organic Cr level increased in the diet. Kidney fat decreased linearly（P〈0.05） as supplemental Cr increased. In Longissimus dorsi（LD）, the ash content decreased linearly, and shear force（kg cm^–2） increased（P〈0.05） as organic Cr level increased in the diet. It is concluded that organic Cr did not affect growth performance, but it improved positively the muscle conformation, reduced kidney fat, whereas in LD there was an increment in shear force in finishing carcass lambs.
