In recent times,solar energy has become one of the largest available sources of renewable energy at our ***,the design of highly efficient solar cells is increasingly becoming crucial as there has been a surge for economically viable alternative energy sources with the lowest *** advances have been made through different routes to make photovoltaic(PV)/solar technologies economically viable,eco-friendly and consequently *** a result,cellulose nanomaterials have become one of the emerging technologies in this regard because of the advantages of high-value bio-based nanostructured materials,such as their abundance and ***-based photoactive nanocomposite materials can be made by integrating conducting photoactive and electroconductive materials with hydrophilic biocompatible *** nanoparticles,such as graphene/reduced graphene oxide cadmium sulphide quantum dots,amongst others,can be introduced into the nanocellulose matrix and can be applied either as charge transporters or photoactive materials in different types of solar ***,in this review,we highlight the optoelectronic properties of different photoactive materials,particularly nanocellulose-based graphene nanocomposites;their efficiencies and drawbacks were *** effect of doping each PV material on the PV performance is also *** is anticipated that the novel material would result in a reduction in the cost of solar cells,jointly enhancing their efficacy in generating environmentally friendly *** the fabrication techniques and equipment play a crucial role in the development of solar cells,the fabrication techniques of bulk-heterojunction(BHJ)cells containing a nanocellulose-based graphene composite and case studies of already fabricated BHJ PV cells with nanocellulose-based graphene composite are discussed.

Objective:To investigate the the analgesic,anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities of the methanolic leaf extract of Maerua crassifolia in mice and ***:Acetic acid-induced writhing and tail immersion methods were used to assess analgesic activity,while xylene and carrageenan-induced paw oedema methods were used to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of the leaf *** and amphetamine-induced pyrexia were used to investigate the antipyretic *** phytochemical analysis and oral acute toxicity of the methanolic leaf extract of Maerua crassifolia were also ***:The leaf extract(100,200,and 400 mg/kg)showed a dose dependent and significant(P<0.05)inhibition of pain in acetic acid-induced writhing and tail immersion *** extract also produced significant(P<0.05)anti-inflammatory activity in both paradigms.A significant(P<0.05)reduction in hyperpyrexia was also observed with the leaf *** phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids,flavonoids,terpenoids,tannins,steroids,resins,saponins and cardiac *** oral median lethal dose of the leaf extract was estimated to be greater than 5000 mg/kg in ***:The findings confirmed its ethnomedical use in the treatment of pains and feverish conditions.

Geohydraulic Investigation of Aquifer Parameters in Abak, Southern Nigeria

A geophysical investigation was carried out to characterize aquifer parameters and assess the groundwater condition in Abak, southern Nigeria. Vertical electrical sounding (VES) was carried out using Schlumberger configuration in 10 locations within the area. Both manual and computer interpretation of the resistivity data reveals three to four geoelectric units (laterite topsoil, medium-grained sand, coarse-grained sand, and sandy clay sand) which agrees with the lithologic log from existing boreholes. The aquifer layer was identified along the third formation with resistivity values ranging from 1239 - 5719 Ωm and aquifer depth ranging from 30.2 - 54.8 m. The aquifer thickness ranged from 24.2 - 43.7 m. Hydraulic conductivity ranged from 0.1206 m/day - 0.5026 m/day with an average value of 0.29403 m/day. Formation factor ranged from 14.55 - 16.64. Porosity ranged from 15.98% - 22.40%, with an average value of 19.64%. The aquiferous zone falls within the medium/coarse-grained sand. The aquifer is shallow, unconfined, and prolific with a little overburden formation of 13.5 m. The area shows good prospects for groundwater development.

Objective:To investigate the antimalarial activity of ethanol extract of Aspilin africana (***) ***:The ethanol extract of *** leaf(100-400 mg/kg) was screened for blood schizonticidal effect against chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium berghei(P. berghei) in mice both in early and established models of antimalarial ***:The leaf extract exhibited significant(P<0.05) antiplasmodial activity in 4-day early infection and in established infection tests with a considerable mean survival time comparable to that of standard drug,chloroquine(10 mg/kg).Conclusions:The findings show thai ethanol extract of *** leaf possesses potent antiplasmodial activity which justify the use in ethnomedicine and can be developed in malaria therapy.

Objective:To evaluate the antiulcer activity of ethanolic leaf extract of Byrsocarpus coccineus,a plant used in herbal medicine for the management of various diseases in ***:Ethanol-,acetylsalicylic acid-,histamine-and water immersion stress-induced gastric ulcers in rats were used to investigate the antiulcer activity of the leaf *** toxicity studies were also carried ***:The ethanolic leaf extract significantly(P<0.05)reduced the ulcer index in all assays used with the maximal antiulcer activity recorded at 400 mg/*** LD_(50)values obtained were greater than 5000 mg/kg in ***:The implication of this finding is that Byrsocarpus coccineus ethanolic leaf extract possesses potent antiulcer activity and the leaf of this plant can serve as a potential source of safe and affordable antiulcer agents.

Compared to large-scale infrequent disasters like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and gas explosions from volcanic (maar) lakes, most small-scale everyday disasters (e.g., landslides and floods) are not well reported and documented in Cameroon, despite the fact that cumulatively, they cause the most casualties and distress to the people affected. This paper documents a debris flow that occurred on the 1st of August 2012 in Kakpenyi, a quarter found in Tinta, one of the villages of Akwaya Sub Division in Manyu Division of the Southwest Region of Cameroon. The event started from the western slope (06°14.350'N & 09°31.475'E) of a hogback in the settlement, and mobilized ca 3.47 × 106 m3 of material over a ca 1 km distance. The material was made up of a chaotic mix of mud, rock fragments, boulders, twigs, tree logs, trunks, and roots. Its distal part dammed river Kakpenyi forming a 10 m deep lake which eventually safely emptied itself. No casualties were recorded but 20 people got injured and 21 people lost farmland. The debris flow was not caused by earthquake shaking. Instead, inappropriate land use acted as a remote cause to predispose the steep slope, while heavy rainfall triggered the flow. Verbal reports talk of a similar event 40 years ago in the area. This shows that Kakpenyi is vulnerable to this kind of hazard, requiring that major infrastructural development projects like roads and bridges in the area be preceded by detailed hazard and vulnerability assessments.

Dosimetric Effects of Thermoplastic Immobilizing Devices on Surface Dose

Thermoplastic immobilizing masks have dosimetric effects on the patient’s skin dose. The thermoplastic percentage depth dose (PDD), equivalent thickness of water for the masks and surface doses were determined. The surface dose factors due to the thermoplastic mask was found to be 1.7949, 1.9456, 2.0563, 2.1967, 2.3827, 2.5459 and 2.6565 for field sizes of 5 × 5, 8 × 8, 10 × 10, 12 × 12, 15 × 15, 18 × 18 and 20 × 20 cm2 respectively which shifted the percentage depth dose curve to lower values. The physical thermoplastic thickness was measured to be between 2.30 and 1.80 mm, and the equivalent thicknesses of water, de, were determined to be between 1.2 and 1.00 mm. This meant that, as the mask thickness decreased, its water equivalent thickness also decreased. The presence of the mask material increased the skin dose to a factor of 1%. The thermoplastic mask factor was also found to be 0.99.

The Effects of Low Intensity Endurance Activity on Various Physiological Parameters and Exercise Induced Oxidative Stress in Dogs

The study of canine athlete physiology has focused on endurance sled dog racing and high intensity short duration Greyhound racing, yet the number of dogs competing in low intensity endurance activities is rising due to the increased numbers of hunting and companion dog activities. There is little information on the physiological effect of longer duration low intensity endurance activities. We set out to evaluate the serum biochemistry, oxidative stress, and cortisol response before and after two consecutive days of exercise in ten healthy unconditioned male dogs. Exercise sessions consisted of 120 minutes on an exercise wheel at 11 km/hour on 2 consecutive days. Blood was collected at four time points: 24 hours pre-exercise (sample 1, Day 0, resting);2 min post-exercise on days 1 and 2, (samples 2 and 3, respectively);and 20 hours post-exercise, collected on day 3(sample 4). Hematocrit, blood gases, serum chemistry, uric acid, cortisol, and F2-isoprostanes were determined. Serum biochemistry and hematocrit suggested hemoconcentration, mild muscle damage and respiratory alkalosis during exercise, which was expected in the unconditioned canine athlete. In addition, plasma indices of oxidative damage (F2-isoprostanes) increased, as did plasma uric acid (an endogenous antioxidant). Importantly, similar to human studies, plasma F2-isoprostanes decreased 24 hours after exercise suggesting a protective effect of exercise. Serum cortisol concentrations were also markedly elevated at the end of exercise on both days suggesting that timing of sampling may play a role in interpreting cortisol results when looking at previous field studies.
