Respiratory pathogens kill m.re people than any other infectious agent each year worldwide.Developm.nt of novel,econom.cally friendly,sustainable,and highly efficient m.terials against viruses is a m.jor challenge.Herein,we describe a nanostructured m.terial com.osed of very sm.ll crystalline phosphate copper nanoparticles synthesized using a new biohybrid technology that em.loys a biological agent for its form.tion at room.tem.erature in aqueous m.dia.The evaluation of different enzym.s in the final preparation of the nanom.terial or even in synthetic m.thods was perform.d.Biochem.cal characterization revealed the form.tion of Cu species in the protein network.The best biom.terial synthesized using a lipase called BioCuNPs showed excellent inhibition capacity against functional proteins of severe acute respiratory syndrom. coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2);for exam.le,assent 3-chym.trypsin like protease(3CLpro)com.lete inhibition was achieved by using 5µg/m.,or acetone(ACE)–spike protein interaction was inhibited by m.re than 80%in the presence of 400µg/m. of BioCuNPs.Taking these in vitro results into account,an efficacy analysis against hum.n coronavirus 229E(HCoV-E229)coronavirus was perform.d.A virus reduction of 99%was obtained in 5 m.n.Additionally,SARS-CoV-2 virus was tested to dem.nstrate high efficiency,with>99%inhibition in 15 m.n using 500 m.crogram.of m.terial.To determ.ne the wide applicability of this nanohybrid against viruses,an evaluation was carried out against a non-enveloped virus such as Hum.n Rhinovirus(HRV-14),obtaining a virus reduction of 99.9%in 5 m.n.Finally,the virucidal capacity against different bacteriophages was also evaluated,obtaining an excellent inhibition effect against PhageΦX174(99.999%reduction in 5 m.n).

Before being dispersed in the environm.nt, m.ture seeds need to be dehydrated. The survival of seeds after dispersal depends on their low hydration in com.ination with high desiccation tolerance. These characteristics are estab- lished during seed m.turation. Som. key seed m.turation genes have been reported to be regulated by alternative splicing （AS）. However, so far AS was described only for single genes and a com.rehensive analysis of AS during seed m.turation has been lacking. We investigated gene expression and AS during Arabidopsis thaliana seed developm.nt at a global level, before and after desiccation. Bioinform.tics tools were developed to identify differentially spliced regions within genes. Our data suggest the im.ortance and shows the peculiar features of AS during seed desiccation. We identified AS in 347o of genes that are expressed at both tim.points before and after desiccation. m.st of these AS transcript variants had not been found before in other tissues. Am.ng the AS genes som. seed m.ster regulators could be found. Interestingly, 6% of all expressed transcripts were not transcriptionally regulated during desiccation, but only m.dified by AS. We propose that AS should be m.re routinely taken into account in the analysis of transcriptom.c data to prevent overlooking potentially im.ortant regulators.

AIm.To provide a com.rehensive and m.re representative national data on the disease,especially on treatm.nt options and outcom.s,and to determ.ne access of retinoblastom. patients from.Luzon,Visayas and m.ndanao to eye care,and determ.ne if access is associated with delay in consultation,staging and outcom.s.m.THODS:Cohort study of retinoblastom. patients seen in eleven institutions located in the three m.jor areas of the Philippines nam.ly Luzon,Vizayas and m.ndanao from.2010-2020.RESULTS:Totally 636 patients,involving 821 eyes,were included.m.jority(57%)were from.Luzon and were seen in institutions in Luzon(72%).Annually,58±10 new cases were seen with 71%having unilateral disease.m.dian delay of consultation rem.ined long at 9(3,17)m.,longest in patients with unilateral disease(Pm.the Visayas(Pm. Staging System.only 35%of patients had Stage 1 while 47%already had extraocular disease.Enucleation was the m.st com.on treatm.nt received by 484 patients while intravenous chem.therapy was received by 469.There were 250(39%)patients alive,195(31%)dead,85(13%)abandoned,17(3%)refused and 89(14%)with no data.CONCLUSION:This study presents the largest cohort of retinoblastom. patients in the Philippines in term. of patients’and participating institutions’num.er and geographical location and type of institution(private and public).It also presents m.re com.rehensive data on the treatm.nts used and outcom.s(survival,globe salvage,and vision retention rates).Delay in consultation was still long am.ng patients leading to advanced disease stage and lower survival rate.Despite increasing capacity to diagnose and m.nage retinoblastom. in the country,the delay of consultation rem.ins long prim.rily due to accessibility issues to eye care institutions especially in the Visayas and financial concerns.The delay was still significant that overall survival rate rem.in low.

A sensing system.in the near infrared region has been developed for am.onia sensing based on the wavelength m.dulation spectroscopy （Wm.） principle. The Wm. is a rather sensitive technique for detecting atom.c/m.lecular species, presenting the advantage that it can be used in the near-infrared region by using the optical telecom.unications technology. In this technique, the laser wavelength and intensity were m.dulated by applying a sine wave signal through the injection current, which allowed the shift of the detection bandwidth to higher frequencies where laser intensity noise was typically lower. Two m.lti-pass cells based on free space light propagation with 160 cm.and 16 cm.of optical path length were used, allowing the redundancy operation and technology validation. This system.used a diode laser with an em.ssion wavelength at 1512.21nm. where NH3 has a strong absorption line. The control of the NH3 gas sensing system. as well as acquisition, processing and data presentation was perform.d.

m.deling gut neuro-epithelial connections in a novel m.crofluidic device

The intestinal lum.n is filled with diverse chem.cal and physical stim.li.Intestinal epithelial cells sense these stim.li and signal to enteric neurons which coordinate a range of physiologic processes required for norm.l digestive tract function.Yet,the neuro-epithelial connections rem.in poorly resolved,in part because the tools for orchestrating interactions between these cellular com.artm.nts are lacking.We describe the developm.nt of a two-com.artm.nt m.crofluidic device for co-culturing enteric neurons with intestinal epithelial cells.The device contains epithelial and neuronal com.artm.nts connected by m.crogrooves.The epithelial com.artm.nt was designed for cell seeding via injection and confinem.nt of intestinal epithelial cells derived from.hum.n intestinal organoids.We dem.nstrated that organoids planarized effectively and retained epithelial phenotype for over a week.In the second cham.er we dissociated and cultured intestinal m.enteric neurons including intrinsic prim.ry afferent neurons(IPANs)from.transgenic m.ce that expressed the fluorescent protein tdTom.to.IPANs extended projections into m.crogrooves,surrounded and frequently m.de contacts with epithelial cells.The density and directionality of neuronal projections were enhanced by the presence of epithelial cells in the adjacent com.artm.nt.Our m.crofluidic device represents a platform.that m.y,in the future,be used to dissect structure and function of neuro-epithelial connections in the gut and other organs(skin,lung,bladder,and others)in health and disease.

Analyzing the m.ltilevel structure of the European airport network

The m.ltilayered structure of the European airport network（EAN）,com.osed of connections and flights between European cities,is analyzed through the k-core decom.osition of the connections network.This decom.osition allows to identify the core,bridge and periphery layers of the EAN.The core layer includes the best-connected cities,which include im.ortant business air traffic destinations.The periphery layer includes cities with lesser connections,which serve low populated areas where air travel is an econom.c alternative.The rem.ining cities form.the bridge of the EAN,including im.ortant leisure travel origins and destinations.The m.ltilayered structure of the EAN affects network robustness,as the EAN is m.re robust to isolation of nodes of the core,than to the isolation of a com.ination of core and bridge nodes.

Hydrogen em.ssion by three wood-feeding subterranean term.te species （Isoptera Rhinoterm.tidae）： Production and characteristics

Hydrogen em.ssion by wood-feeding term.tes, Coptoterm.s form.sanus, Reticuliterm.s flavipes and Reticuliterm.s virginicus, was investigated upon a cellulosic substrate as their food source. The em.ssion rates am.ng the three species tested were significantly different and R. virginicus dem.nstrated the greatest H2 em.ssion at 4.78 ± 0.15μm.l/h/g body weight. In a sealed test apparatus, H2 em.ssion for each term.te species showed a quick increase at the initial incubation hours （3-6 h）, followed by a slower growth, possibly due to the feedback inhibition by gas accum.lation. Further investigation revealed that continuous H2 em.ssion could be m.intained by reducing the H2 partial pressure in the sealed container. The bioconversion of cellulose to m.lecular H2 by the subterranean term.tes tested could reach as high as 3 858 ± 294μm.l/g cellulose, suggesting that the term.te gut system.is unique and efficient in H2 conversion from.cellulosic substrate.

In Arabidopsis thaliana, m.ltiple genes involved in shoot apical m.ristem.（SAm. transitions have been char- acterized, but the m.chanism. required for the dynam.c attainm.nt of vegetative, inflorescence, and floral m.ristem.（Vm. Im. Fm. cell fates during SAm.transitions are not well understood. Here we show that a m.DS-box gene, XAANTAL2 （XAL2/AGL14）, is necessary and sufficient to induce flowering, and its regula- tion is im.ortant in Fm.m.intenance and determ.nacy, xal2 m.tants are late flowering, particularly under short-day （SD） condition, while XAL2 overexpressing plants are early flowering, but their flowers have vege- tative traits. Interestingly, inflorescences of the latter plants have higher expression levels of LFY, AP1, and TFL1 than wild-type plants. In addition we found that XAL2 is able to bind the TFL1 regulatory regions. On the other hand, the basipetal carpels of the 35S：：XAL2 lines lose determ.nacy and m.intain high levels of WUS expression under SD condition. To provide a m.chanistic explanation for the com.lex roles of XAL2 in SAm.transitions and the apparently paradoxical phenotypes of XAL2 and other m.DS-box （SOCl, AGL24） over- expressors, we conducted dynam.c gene regulatory network （GRN） and epigenetic landscape m.deling. We uncovered a GRN m.dule that underlies Vm. Im. and Fm.gene configurations and transition patterns in wild- type plants as well as loss and gain of function lines characterized here and previously. Our approach thus provides a novel m.chanistic fram.work for understanding the com.lex basis of SAm.developm.nt.

Dispersal behavior of yellowjacket （Vespula germ.nica） queens

Understanding the factors that affect anim.l dispersal behavior is im.ortant from.both fi.m.am.ntal and applied perspectives. Dispersal can have clear evolutionary and ecological consequences, but for norm.tive insect pests, dispersal capacity can also help to explain invasion success. Vespula germ.nica is a social wasp that, in the last century, has successfully invaded several regions of the world, showing one of the highest spread rates reported for a nonnative insect. In contrast with nonsocial wasps, in social species, queens are responsible for population redistribution and spread, as workers are sterile. For V. germ.nica, it has been observed that queen flight is lim.ted to 2 distinct periods： early autum., when new queens leave the nest to m.te and find sheltered places in which to hibernate, and spring when new colonies are founded. Our aim.was to study the flight behavior of V. germ.nica queens by focusing on the different periods in which dispersal occurs, characterizing as well the potential contribution of queen flight （i.e., distance） to the observed geographical spread. Our results suggest that the distances flown by nonover- wintered queens is greater than that flown by overwintered individuals, suggesting that the m.in queen dispersal events would occur before queens enter hibernation. This could relate to a behavioral trait of the queens to avoid the inbreeding with related drones. Additionally, given the short distances flown and rem.rkable geographical spread observed, we provide evidence showing that queen dispersal by flight is likely to contribute proportionately less to population spread than hum.n-aided factors.
