Certain traits of recipient environments,such as the availability of limiting resources,strongly determine the establishment success and spread of non-native *** limitations may be overcome through behavioral plasticity,allowing them to exploit alternative ***,we show how a secondary cavity nester bird,the rose-ringed parakeet Psittacula krameri,innovates its nesting behavior as a response to the shortage of tree cavities for nesting in its invasive range in Tenerife(Canary Islands).We observed that some breeding pairs excavated their own nest cavities in palms,thus becoming primary cavity nester,whereas others occupied nests built with wood sticks by another invasive species,the monk parakeet Myiopsitta *** use of these novel nesting strategies increased the number of breeding pairs by up to 52%over 6 years,contributing to a 128.8%increase of the whole *** nests were located at greater heights above ground and were more aggregated around conspecifics but did not result in greater breeding success than natural *** of monk parakeet colonies by rose-ringed parakeets also benefited the former species through a protective-nesting association against nest *** results show how an invasive species innovate nesting behaviors and increase nest-site availability in the recipient environment,thus facilitating its population growth and invasion *** behavioral innovations in other invasive rose-ringed parakeet populations may be overlooked,and should be considered for effective management plans.

AIM: To identify new markers of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using a proteomic analysis. METHODS: Patients with liver cirrhosis of the three most frequent etiologies: hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus and alcoholic liver disease, were included in the study. The samples were analysed by 2D-electrophoresis in order to determine the differential protein expression. The proteins were separated according to the charge in immobilized pH 3-10 gradient strips and then by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Proteins of interest were excised, digested with trypsin and the resulting peptides were separated and identified. RESUlTS: Three differentially expressed apolipoproteins (Apo) were identified based on the protein profile using proteomic techniques: Apo-A1, Apo-A4 and Apo-E. Apo-A4 levels were significantly lower in HCC than in non-HCC patients regardless of etiology (P ltivariate logistic regression showed that Apo-A4 and Apo-A1 were the only independent factors related to HCC diagnosis (P luding both Apo-A4 and Apo-A1 showed an area under the ROC of 0.944 (P lUSION: Apo-A4 and Apo-A1 may be used clinically as biomarkers of HCC with a high sensibility and specificity. These findings may provide additional insights into the mechanism of HCC development and progression.

Unraveling the factors that determine variation of diversity in tropical mountain systems is a topic for debate in plant *** is especially true in areas where topography is complex due to volcano elevational gradients and where forests are vulnerable to human *** this study we used a set of climatic(temperature,rainfall,and radiation solar),topographic(elevation,slope aspect,and slope orientation)and human disturbance variables to determine their effect on diversity and composition patterns of a tree community,considering three slope aspects of a tropical volcano in southeastern *** sampled trees in seventy 0.1-ha plots distributed on three slope aspects of the Tacanávolcano along an elevational gradient of 1500 to 2500 *** determined diversity patterns(general tree richness,exponential of Shannon index,and pioneer species richness)with linear regression models,and for beta diversity,we used a dissimilarity index(within and between elevational bands 100 m wide).The effect of a set of environmental and human disturbance variables on tree diversity and community composition was analyzed with general linear models and multivariate analyses,*** registered 2,949 individual trees belonging to 176 species and *** average species richness and alpha diversity per plot were 13(standard deviation±6)and 9(±5),*** tree richness and alpha diversity increased in the middle part(unimodal patterns)of the elevational gradient,but pioneer species richness decreased linearly with *** variance explained by general linear models was greater in richness(32%)than in alpha diversity(25.3%).The most important predictor variables were temperature(elevational gradient),which explained the unimodal pattern(richness and alpha diversity increase at intermediate levels of temperature),and slope orientation,which explained the increase in richness and alpha diversity toward the geographic *** temperature had a signific

The use of metal-accumulating plants for the phytoremediation of contaminated soils is gaining more attention. Mercury （Hg）-contaminated soils from historical gold mines represent a potential risk to human health and the environment. Therefore, Jatropha curcas plant, that has shown its tolerance to these environments, is a species of particular interest to implement phytoremediation techniques in gold mining sites. In this work, the behavior of J. curcas was assessed in different hydroponic cultures fortified with Hg at concentrations of 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80μg Hg/ml （T5, T10, T20, T40 and T80, respectively）. After exposure, plant growth, net photosynthesis, leaf area, and Hg accumulation were determined and variables such as net Hg uptake, effective Hg accumulation, translocation and bioaccumu- lation factors were calculated. Accumulation of Hg in root and leaf tissues increased with respect to the Hg concentrations in the hydroponic culture, with statistically significant differences （p 〈 0.05） among treatments. Moreover, Hg concentration in roots was 7 and 12-fold higher in average than in plant leaves and shoots, respectively. Many effects were found in the development of plants, especially related with loss of biomass and leaf area, with significant growth inhibition related to control values （〉50% with treatment T5）. Moreover, percentage of inhibition was even higher （〉60%） with same treatment for net photosynthesis. Finally, it should be highlighted that for T40 and T80 treatments, plant growth and photosynthesis were almost completely depleted （88%-95%）.

Despite the high amount of scientific work dedicated to the gold nanoparticles in catalysis, most of the research has been performed utilising supported nanoparticles obtained by traditional impreg‐nation of gold salts onto a support, co‐precipitation or deposition‐precipitation methods which do not benefit from the recent advances in nanotechnologies. Only more recently, gold catalyst scien‐tists have been exploiting the potential of preforming the metal nanoparticles in a colloidal suspen‐sion before immobilisation with great results in terms of catalytic activity and the morphology con‐trol of mono‐and bimetallic catalysts. On the other hand, the last decade has seen the emergence of more advanced control in gold metal nanoparticle synthesis, resulting in a variety of anisotropic gold nanoparticles with easily accessible new morphologies that offer control over the coordination of surface atoms and the optical properties of the nanoparticles （tunable plasmon band） with im‐mense relevance for catalysis. Such morphologies include nanorods, nanostars, nanoflowers, den‐dritic nanostructures or polyhedral nanoparticles to mention a few. In addition to highlighting newly developed methods and properties of anisotropic gold nanoparticles, in this review we ex‐amine the emerging literature that clearly indicates the often superior catalytic performance and amazing potential of these nanoparticles to transform the field of heterogeneous catalysis by gold by offering potentially higher catalytic performance, control over exposed active sites, robustness and tunability for thermal‐, electro‐and photocatalysis.
