Soil-transmitted helminth egg contamination from soil of indigenous communities in selected barangays in Tigaon, Camarines Sur, Philippines

Objective:To provide baseline data on the prevalence and intensity of soil-transmitted helminthiasis egg contamination in the soil among indigenous ***:A total of 317 soil samples from three barangays of indigenous communities communities in Tigaon,Camarines Sur,Philippines were examined for soil-transmitted helminthiasis egg contamination using optimized sugar flotation ***:Of the soil samples examined,141(44.48%)were contaminated by Ascaris spp.,Toxocara spp.,and Trichuris *** cumulative prevalence varying across the study sites(Pby Toxocara *** Trichuris *** a prevalence of 41.96%,7.57%,and 5.36%,***,Toxocara *** the highest intensity of contamination,followed by Ascaris *** Trichuris *** term of geometric mean soil-transmitted helminthiasis eggs recovered per one gram soil sample(34.25,21.45,and 11.85 respectively).Each study site harbors significant amount of soiltransmitted helminthiasis eggs and zoonotic Toxocara eggs,which present high risk of soil-transmitted helminthiasis infection,particularly among children observed to play and cohabitate with animals known to be hosts of these ***:The alarming rate of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and Toxocara egg contamination reported in this study suggests that additional measures should be undertaken to control soil-transmitted helminthiasis and zoonotic intestinal infections in the country.

Application of micro-morphology in the physical characterization of urban road dust

Urban road dust was collected from Vellore City,Tamil Nadu,India,and *** electron microscopy(SEM)was used to examine road dust from nine sampling locations in the study *** image analysis was used to identify various shape factors of collected dust *** equivalent spherical diameter of most particles was between 10μm and 30μ*** particles had greater concentrations at locations with higher traffic *** were categorized into four classes based on their shape factors,viz.,spherical,mineral,elongated,or *** particles had the smallest mean equivalent diameter(1.95μm)and mineral particles had the largest diameter(33.3μm).Spherical particles made up the smallest portion of road dust(0-12%)in the study region and mineral particles made up the largest(45-65%).Elongated and irregular particles,each made up 23-30%of road *** dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis was used to identify the elemental composition of dust *** particles were mostly from combustion sources and mineral particles were largely of crustal *** individual source was found for irregular and elongated *** debris was the major source of irregular particles.

Medical Geology,the emerging discipline that focuses on the health impacts of geologic materials and geologic processes,has its roots in Guizhou Province,*** the 1980 s *** baoshan and his students recognized that a large number of people in Guizhou Province had clinical symptoms of arsenic poisoning,fluorine exposure,selenosis,and other diseases caused by exposure to potentially toxic trace elements or due to deficiency of essential *** publications and invitations to scientists to visit the Province ultimately resulted in increased attention to the health impacts of the natural environment and the formation of scientific societies,the publication of at least a dozen books,and thousands of technical articles on what is now called Medical Geology.

Kinetic and morphology study of alginate-vineyard pruning waste biocomposite vs. non modified vineyard pruning waste for dye removal

In this work a comparative bioadsorption study between a biocomposite consisting of hydrolysed vineyard pruning waste entrapped in calcium alginate spheres and non entrapped vineyard residue was carried *** have demonstrated that the biocomposite based on lignocellulose-calcium alginate spheres removed 77.3% of dyes,while non entrapped lignocellulose eliminated only removed 27.8% of colour *** experimental data were fitted to several kinetic models（pseudo-first order,pseudo-second order,Chien-Clayton model,intraparticle diffusion model and bangham model）; being pseudo-second order the kinetic model that better described the adsorption of dyes onto both *** addition,a morphological study（roughness and shape） of alginate-vineyard biocomposite was established under extreme conditions,observing significant differences between hydrated and dehydrated alginate-vineyard *** techniques used to carry out this morphological study consisted of scanning electron microscopy（SEM）,perfilometry and 3D surface analysis.

Additively manufactured Ti–Ta–Cu alloys for the next-generation load-bearing implants

bacterial colonization of orthopedic implants is one of the leading causes of failure and clinical complexities for load-bearing metallic implants. Topical or systemic administration of antibiotics may not offer the most efficient defense against colonization, especially in the case of secondary infection, leading to surgical removal of implants and in some cases even limbs. In this study, laser powder bed fusion was implemented to fabricate Ti3Al2V alloy by a 1:1 weight mixture of CpTi and Ti6Al4V powders. Ti-Tantalum(Ta)–Copper(Cu) alloys were further analyzed by the addition of Ta and Cu into the Ti3Al2V custom alloy. The biological,mechanical, and tribo-biocorrosion properties of Ti3Al2V alloy were evaluated. A 10 wt.% Ta(10Ta) and 3 wt.% Cu(3Cu) were added to the Ti3Al2V alloy to enhance biocompatibility and impart inherent bacterial resistance. Additively manufactured implants were investigated for resistance against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus strains of bacteria for up to 48 h. A 3 wt.% Cu addition to Ti3Al2V displayed improved antibacterial efficacy, i.e.78%–86% with respect to CpTi. Mechanical properties for Ti3Al2V–10Ta–3Cu alloy were evaluated, demonstrating excellent fatigue resistance, exceptional shear strength, and improved tribological and tribo-biocorrosion characteristics when compared to Ti6Al4V. In vivo studies using a rat distal femur model revealed improved early-stage osseointegration for alloys with10 wt.% Ta addition compared to CpTi and Ti6Al4V. The 3 wt.% Cu-added compositions displayed biocompatibility and no adverse infammatory response in vivo. Our results establish the Ti3Al2V–10Ta–3Cu alloy’s synergistic effect on improving both in vivo biocompatibility and microbial resistance for the next generation of load-bearing metallic implants.

Magnetic field assisted fluidization:A modified Richardson-Zaki equation

Magnetic particles can be uniformly fluidized by coupling the gas flow with an externally imposed magnetic field. Interparticle forces generated by the magnetic field cause aggregation of the particles in chain-like structures preferentially oriented along the magnetic field lines. In the present paper, we study the implications of the formation of these special types of aggregates on the empirical Richardson-Zaki （RZ） equation, originally proposed to describe the expansion of fluidized beds of non-aggregated particles. We have addressed two important issues, namely the flow regime, which is a function of the size of the aggregates, and the effect of shape and orientation of the chain-like aggregates with respect to gas flow on fluid drag. We propose a modified RZ equation （MRZE） in which the velocity scale, given by the terminal settling velocity of the individual aggregates, and the RZ exponent are predetermined as a function of the chain length. The chain length depends on the ratio of the magnetic energy to gravitational energy, and is estimated from the magnetic field intensity, and particle magnetization, size and density. Predictions of the MRZE are successfully compared with published results in the literature on the expansion of magnetic particles in the presence of externally applied magnetic fields.

Alagille syndrome(ALGS;OMIM#118450)is a highlyvariable,multi-systemic,autosomal dominant disorder,caused by mutations in the Jagged Canonical Notch Ligand 1(JAG1)gene(20p12.2)or in the Neurogenic locus notch homolog protein 2(NOTCH2)gene(1p13).^(1)It primarily affects the liver,heart,eyes,face,kidney,skin,vertebrae,and skeleton.^(1,2)The JAG1 gene has 26 exons and about 90%of the ALGS cases result from pathogenic variants in the JAG1 and around 7%of cases have deletions in chromosome 20 that include this gene.

Introduction In December 2003 Episodes published an article entitled “Medical Geology： New Relevance in the Earth Sciences” by bowman, bobrowski, and Selinus. This paper was just one early example of the interest and excitement sparked by this emerging field of medical geology-the impacts of geologic materials and geologic processes on animal and human health. Medical geology attempts to bring together geoscientists and biomedical/public health researchers to address a range of environmental health problems. Much of the impetus for the resurgence of interest in medical geology was a direct result of support and encouragement from the International Union of Geological Sciences （IUGS） and its former Commission on Geologic Sciences for Environmental Plan- ning （COGEOENVIRONMENT）.

Novel therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondria as a gateway in neurodegeneration

In recent years, multiple disciplines have focused on mitochondrial biology and contributed to understanding its relevance towards adult-onset neurodegenerative disorders. These are complex dynamic organelles that have a variety of functions in ensuring cellular health and homeostasis. The plethora of mitochondrial functionalities confers them an intrinsic susceptibility to internal and external stressors(such as mutation accumulation or environmental toxins), particularly so in long-lived postmitotic cells such as neurons. Thus, it is reasonable to postulate an involvement of mitochondria in aging-associated neurological disorders, notably neurodegenerative pathologies including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. On the other hand, biological effects resulting from neurodegeneration can in turn affect mitochondrial health and function, promoting a feedback loop further contributing to the progression of neuronal dysfunction and cellular death. This review examines state-of-the-art knowledge, focus on current research exploring mitochondrial health as a contributing factor to neuroregeneration, and the development of therapeutic approaches aimed at restoring mitochondrial homeostasis in a pathological setting.
