The main objective of the present study was to identify simple sequence repeat （SSR） markers associated with the amino acid content of rice （Oryza sativa L.）. SSR markers were selected by prescreening for the relationship to amino acid content. Eighty-four rice landrace accessions from Korea were evaluated for 16 kinds of amino acids in brown rice and ganotyped with 25 SSR markers. Analysis of population structure revealed four subgroups in the population. Linkage disequilibrium （LD） patterns and distributions are of fundamental importance for genome-wide mapping associations. The mean r^2 value for all intrachromosomal loci pairs was 0.033. LD between linked markers decreased with distance. Marker-trait associations were investigated using the unified mixed-model approach, considering both population structure （Q） and kinship （K）. A total of 42 marker-trait associations with amino acids （P 〈 0.05） were identified using 15 different SSR markers covering three chromosomes and explaining more than 40% of the total variation. These results suggest that association analysis in rice is a viable alternative to quantitative trait loci mapping and should help rice breeders develop strategies for improving rice quality.

Mungbean （Vigna radiata （L.） Wilczek） is a unique species in its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, with early maturity, and relatively good drought resistance. We used 454 sequencing technology for transcriptome sequencing. A total of 150 159 and 142 993 reads produced 5 254 and 6 374 large contigs （〉_500 bp） with an average length of 833 and 853 for Sunhwa and Jangan, respectively. Functional annotation to known sequences yielded 41.34% and 41.74% unigenes for Jangan and Sunhwa. A higher number of simple sequence repeat （SSR） motifs was identified in Jangan （1 630） compared with that of Sunhwa （1 334）. A similar SSR distribution pattern was observed in both varieties. A total of 8 249 single nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） and indels with 2 098 high-confidence candidates were identified in the two mungbean varieties. The average distance between individual SNPs was -860 bp. Our report demonstrates the utility of transcriptomic data for implementing a functional annotation and development of genetic markers. We also provide large resource sequence data for mungbean improvement programs.

A new heuristic approach was undertaken for the establishment of a core set for the diversity research of rice. As a result, 107 entries were selected from the 10 368 characterized accessions. The core set derived using this new approach provided a good representation of the characterized accessions present in the entire collection. No significant differences for the mean, range, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of each trait were observed between the core and existing collections. We also compared the diversity of core sets established using this Heuristic Core Collection （HCC） approach with those of core sets established using the conventional clustering methods. This modified heuristic algorithm can also be used to select genotype data with allelic richness and reduced redundancy, and to facilitate management and use of large collections of plant genetic resources in a more efficient way.

Differential risk of 23 site-specific incident cancers and cancer-related mortality among patients withmetabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease:a population-based cohort study with 9.7 million Korean subjects

Sequence-related amplified polymorphism（SRAP） is a novel molecular marker technique designed to amplify open reading frames（ORFs） . Here,for the first time,SRAP was used to identify mulberry germplasm. Twenty-three mulberry accessions were screened using SRAP techniques,with 12 primer combinations selected for their reproducibility and polymorphism. Out of 83 PCR fragments scored,59（71.1%） were polymorphic,with an average of 4.9 polymorphic bands and 6.9 bands per primer combination. Mean gene diversity and PIC were 0.1611 and 0.1353,respectively. The genetic similarity coefficient ranged from 0.6905 to 0.9524,with an average of 0.8330. The phylogenetic tree was obtained using the UPGMA method using the total number of amplified SRAP fragments. The results from cluster analysis were in general agreement with our morphologic classification.

Introduction:Although an association between metabolic dysfunctionassociated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)and cardiovascular disease or overall mortality has been reported,it is unclearwhether there is an association between MAFLD and cancer incidence or *** aimed to investigate the differential risk of all-and site-specific cancer incidence and mortality according to MAFLD subgroups categorized by additional etiologies of liver ***:Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database,we stratified the participants into three groups:(1)single-etiology MAFLD(SMAFLD)or MAFLD of pure metabolic origin;(2)mixed-etiology MAFLD(M-MAFLD)or MAFLD with additional etiological factor(s)(i.e.,concomitant liver diseases and/or heavy alcohol consumption);and(3)*** steatosis and fibrosiswere defined using the fatty liver index and the BARDscore,*** proportional hazards regression was performed to estimate the risk of cancer ***:Among the 9,718,182 participants,the prevalence of S-MAFLD and M-MAFLD was 29.2%and 6.7%,*** the median 8.3 years of follow-up,510,330(5.3%)individuals were newly diagnosed with cancer,and 122,774(1.3%)cancer-related deaths occurred among the entire *** with the non-MAFLD group,the risk of all-cancer incidence and mortality was slightly higher among patients in the S-MAFLD group(incidence,adjusted hazard ratio[aHR]=1.03;95%confidence interval[CI]:1.02−1.04;mortality,aHR=1.06;95%CI:1.04−1.08)and highest among patients with M-MAFLD group(incidence,aHR=1.31;95%CI:1.29−1.32;mortality,aHR=1.45;95%CI:1.42−1.48,respectively).The M-MAFLD with fibrosis group(BARD score≥2)showed the highest relative risk of all-cancer incidence(aHR=1.38,95%CI=1.36–1.39),followed by the M-MAFLD without fibrosis group(aHR=1.09,95%CI=1.06–1.11).Similar trends were observed for cancer-related ***:MAFLD classification,by applying additional etiologies other than pure metabolic origi

The effects of process variables such as enzyme types, enzyme ratio, reaction temperature, pH, time, and ethanol concentration on the extraction of unripe apple polyphenol were investigated. The results indicated that Viscozyme L had the strongest effect on polyphenols extraction and was selected to study the polyphenol composition. The ratio of enzyme (Viscozyme L) to substrate (2 fungal beta-glucanase units (FBG)) at 0.02, reaction at pH 3.7, 50 °C for 12 h, and ethanol concentration of 70% were chosen as the most favorable extraction condition. Total phenolic content (TPC), reducing sugar content (RSC), and extraction yield increased by about 3, 1.5, and 2 times, respectively, compared with control. The contents of p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and caffeic acid increased to 8, 4, and 32 times, respectively. The enzyme-aided polyphenol extraction process from unripe apples might be applied to food industry for enhancing bioactive compound production.

A Decade-old Change in the Screening Rate for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Among a Hepatitis B Virus-infected Population in Korea

Background： Evaluating a change in the screening rate for hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） is critical for understanding screening implementation, and whether targeted population groups are receiving proper screening. This study examined recent nationwide changes in HCC screening use among hepatitis B virus （HBV）-infected populations after the introduction of the Korean National Cancer Screening Program and predictors of screening adherence. Methods： We analyzed 165 and 276 participants 〉40 years of age who were hepatitis B surface antigen-positive fiom 2001 （14,936 participants） to 2010-2011 （9159 participants） Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, respectively. Demographic data, socioeconomic factors, and HCC screening use were collected by means of self-reported questionnaires. Results： The rate of HCC screening within the previous 2 years increased significantly from 17.5% in 2001 to 40.3% in 2010- 20I 1 （P〈 0.0001 ）. The rate of HCC screening use increased from 2001 to 2010-2011 in all study populations. Subjects who had a higher income staius and were aware of their infection were more likely to have undergone recent HCC screening. Conclusions： This study showed a substantial increase in HCC screening in high-risk HBV-infected subjects from 2001 to 2010-2011. However, the HCC screening participation rate remained suboptimal despite the introduction of the nationwide screening program. Efforts should be made to identiry high-risk individuals and increase attendance at HCC screening events among high-risk groups.

BACKGROUND： Sarcopenia and non-alcoholic fatty liver dis- ease （NAFLD） share similar pathophysiological mechanisms, and the relationship between sarcopenia and NAFLD has been recently investigated. The study investigated whether low skel- etal muscle mass is differentially associated with NAFLD by gender in Korean adults. METHODS： We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the data from the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The skeletal muscle index （SMI） was obtained by the appendicular skeletal muscle mass divided by the weight. NAFLD was defined as a fatty liver index （FLI）〉60 in the absence of other chronic liver disease. RESULTS： Among the included subjects, 18.3% （SE： 1.4%） in men and 7.0% （SE： 0.7%） in women were classified as having FLI-defined NAFLD. Most of the risk factors for FLI-defined NAFLD showed a significant negative correlation with the SMI in both genders. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that low SMI was associated with FLI-defined NAFLD, inde- pendent of other metabolic and lifestyle parameters in both genders [males： odds ratio （OR）=1.35; 95% confidence inter- val （CI）： 1.17-1.54; females： OR=1.36; 95% CI： 1.18-1.55]. The magnitude of the association between FLI-defined NAFLD and low SMI was higher in middle aged to elderly males （OR-1.50; 95% CI： 1.22-1.84） than in males less than 45 years of age （OR=1.25; 95% CI： 1.02-1.52） and in premenopausal females （OR=l.50; 95% CI： 1.12-2.03） than in postmenopausal females （OR-1.36; 95% CI： 1.20-1.54）.CONCLUSIONS： Low SMI is associated with the risk of FLI- defined NAFLD independent of other well-known metabolic risk factors in both genders. This association may differ ac- cording to age group or menopausal status. Further studies are warranted to confirm this relationship.

Over the last four decades, rapid industrialisation and a Westernized lifestyle have changed disease patterns in South Korea. This study was conducted to review the current state of men＇s health in South Korea. By reviewing reports of government authorities and domestic and foreign studies related to men＇s health, we found that in men ~〉 65 years of age, 28.4% considered their health status good, whereas 38.3% considered their health status poor. The prevalence of moderate-to-severe lower urinary tract symptoms was similar to that in Caucasians. The prevalence of erectile dysfunction was higher than the global average. The incidence of cryptorchidism and hypospadias showed a tendency towards increase. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus continuously increased by 10.8% in 2008 and was the fifth leading cause of death in 2008. The prevalence of obesity increased from 26.0% in 1998 to 31.7% in 2007. The prevalence of ischaemic heart disease has continuously increased, with heart diseases causing one of every 12 deaths. The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 2005 was 17.2% among adults 〉~ 45 years of age. The top five prevalent cancers in men, in descending order, were cancers of the stomach, lung, liver, large bowel and prostate, among which the incidence of stomach, lung and liver cancers decreased by 0.7%, 0.6% and 2.2%, respectively, from 1999 to 2007, whereas the incidence of large bowel and prostate cancers increased by 7.0% and 13.2%, respectively. The prevalence of depression, dementia and sleep disorders was estimated as 17.3%, 4.21% and 20.2%, respectively. Together, these findings suggest that disease patterns in South Korean men are becoming Westernized.
