Par.icle char.e density is vitally impor.ant for.monitor.ng electr.static char.es and under.tanding par.icle char.ing behavior.in fluidized beds. In this paper. a dual-mater.al pr.be was tested in a gas-solid fluidized bed for.measur.ng the char.e density of fluidized par.icles. The exper.ments wer. conducted in a two-dimensional fluidized bed with both single bubble injection and fr.ely bubbling, at var.ous par.icle char.e densities and super.icial gas velocities. Unifor.ly sized glass beads wer. used to eliminate complicating factor. at this ear.y stage of pr.be development. Peak cur.ents, extr.cted fr.m dynamic signals, wer. decoupled to deter.ine char.e densities of bed par.icles, which wer. found to be qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with char.e densities dir.ctly measur.d by Far.day cup fr.m the fr.ely bubbling fluidized bed. The cur.ent signals wer. also decoupled to estimate bubble r.se velocities, which wer. found to be in r.asonable agr.ement with those obtained dir.ctly by analyzing video images.

The effects of tube bank configur.tion on for.es and heat tr.nsfer.wer. investigated for.both two-dimensional and thr.e-dimensional gas fluidized beds. Effective dynamic for.es and heat tr.nsfer.coefficients wer. measur.d for.sever.l tube bank configur.tions, and it was found that the aver.ge for.es ar. smaller.than for.a single tube. The heat tr.nsfer.coefficient can be incr.ased by pr.viding sufficient space for.par.icles to descend ar.und both sides of the tube bank. The r.sults pr.vide useful guidelines for.optimizing the configur.tion of tube banks to achieve high heat tr.nsfer.coefficients while r.ducing tube er.sion due to dynamic for.es.

Electr.static beneficiation of fly ash in a fr.e-falling system

A systematic study of fly ash electr.static beneficiation in a fr.e-falling separ.tion system was car.ied out to pr.vide fundamental under.tanding of the separ.tion efficiency for.the design of a suitable pr.cess for.industr.al applications. The par.meter. investigated included feeding position, electr.c field str.ngth, par.icle size and moistur. content. Par.icles lar.er.than 105 μm pr.sented the best separ.tion efficiency among four.differ.nt size fr.ctions, wher.as par.icles smaller.than 44μm showed minimal separ.tion. However. sonication tr.atments helped separ.tion by liber.ting mor. car.on fr.m ash par.icles, although par.icle sizes wer. r.duced as well. Exper.ments also showed that exposur. to moistur. significantly alter.d char.ing behavior.of fly ash and its subsequent separ.tion due to mor. fr.e mobile ion-induced char.e exchanges. The optimal feeding position was found to be slightly on the side of the negative electr.de, leading to a 30% r.duction in loss-on-ignition （LOI） and a 45% r.cover. in a single pass. A simplified mechanical model based on tr.jector. analysis for.char.ed par.icles in an electr.cal field was in r.asonable agr.ement with exper.mental r.sults.

A Sur.ey of Language-Based Appr.aches to Cyber.Physical and Embedded System Development

As computer. continue to advance, they ar. becoming mor. capable of sensing, inter.cting, and communicating with the physical and cyber.wor.d. Medical devices, electr.nic br.king systems in automotive applications, and industr.al contr.l systems ar. examples of the many Cyber.Physical Systems （CPS） that utilize these computing capabilities. Given the potential consequences of softwar. r.lated failur.s in such systems, a high degr.e of safety, secur.ty, and r.liability is often r.quir.d. Pr.gr.mming languages ar. impor.ant tools used by pr.gr.mmer. to develop CPS. They pr.vide a pr.gr.mmer.with the ability to tr.nsfor. designs into machine code. Of equal impor.ance is their.ability to detect and avoid pr.gr.mming mistakes. The development of CPS has pr.dominantly been accomplished using the C pr.gr.mming language. Although C is a power.ul language, it lacks featur.s pr.sent in other.languages that facilitate the development of r.liable systems. This has pr.mpted r.sear.h into language-based alter.atives for.impr.ving pr.gr.m quality thr.ugh the use of pr.gr.mming languages. This paper.pr.sents an over.iew of the char.cter.stics of embedded and cyber.physical systems and the associated r.quir.ments imposed on pr.gr.mming languages. This is followed by a sur.ey of r.levant r.sear.h into language- based methods for.cr.ating safe, r.liable, and r.bust softwar. for.CPS.

Non-UV based ger.icidal activity of metal-doped TiO_2 coating on solid sur.aces

A stain-based scr.ening method was developed to scr.en differ.nt catalyst coatings for.their.ger.icidal activity. A Baclight dead/live bacter.a viability kit （invitr.gen, molecular.pr.bes） was used for.staining the cell. The scr.ening was car.ied out following a standar. pr.cedur.. This included loading cell suspension to solid sur.ace and maintaining contact for.30 min, then staining with a mixtur. containing dyes. The stained cells wer. obser.ed using an epifluor.scent micr.scope and photogr.phed with a CCD camer. under.UV. Metal-doped TiO2 coatings on AI plates wer. pr.par.d and tested for.non-UV ger.icidal activity without using UV. It was tested using model micr.or.anisms such as Baker. Yeast （Sacchar.myces cer.visiae）, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas putida, and Escher.chia coli. On the basis of the ger.icidal activity of catalyst and the degr.e of damage caused to the cells, the stained cells may appear.gr.en （viable）, gr.en with r.d or.yellow nuclei and yellow （compr.mised） or.r.d （nonviable）. Accor.ing to their.stained color. cells wer. counted to calculate the per.entage of dead, live, and compr.mised cells. Compr.mised cells ar. cells that gr.w ver. slowly after.r.cultur.ng indicating a degr.e of r.ver.ible cell damage. Scr.ening the ger.icidal activity using this staining method is accur.te and efficient, and r.quir.s less time than the cultur.-based method. A modification to the pr.cedur. for.measur.ng ger.icidal activity of r.ugh sur.aces or.fibr.us coatings was developed. Both TiO2 and metal-doped TiO2 （Ag, Pt, Au, Cu） possess non-UV based ger.icidal activity. The ger.icidal activity of TiO2 was found to be r.lated with its wetting pr.per.y and can be impr.ved by UV ir.adiation befor. testing. It is not gr.atly affected by contact time, indicating a fast acting ger.icidal activity.

Motivated by sensitivity analysis with r.spect to piezoelectr.c actuator.placement on an Euler.Ber.onlli beam, this wor. illustr.tes the key concepts r.lated to sensitivity equation for.ulation for.inter.ace pr.blems wher. the par.meter.of inter.st deter.ines the location of the inter.ace. A four.h or.er.model pr.blem is consider.d, and a homogenization pr.cedur. for.sensitivity computation is constr.cted using standar. finite clement methods. Numer.cal r.sults show that pr.per.for.ulation and appr.ximation of the sensitivity inter.ace conditions is cr.tical to obtaining conver.ent numer.cal sensitivity appr.ximations. A second or.er.elliptic inter.ace model pr.blem is also mentioned, and the homogenization pr.cedur. is outlined br.efly for.this model.
