Polymorphisms in the promoter region of IL10 gene are associated with virus etiology of infant bronchiolitis

Background Bronchiolitis is the most common infection leading to hospitalization in infancy. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine, and in our previous study, IL10 gene rs1800896 (-1082A/G) polymorphism was associated with viral etiology of infant bronchiolitis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the associations between IL10 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at rs1800890 (-3575A/T), rs1800871 (-819C/T) or rs1800872 (-592C/A) either alone or combined with the SNP at rs1800896 (-1082G/A), and the etiology and severity of infant bronchiolitis. Methods Data on four IL10 SNPs were available from 135 full-term infants, hospitalized for bronchiolitis at age less than 6 months, and from 378 to 400 controls. Viral etiology was studied, and oxygen support, feeding support and the length of stay in hospital were recorded during bronchiolitis hospitalization. Results Infants with rhinovirus bronchiolitis had the IL10 rs1800890 variant AT or TT genotype less often (18.2%) than controls (63.3%, P=0.03), and likewise, had the IL10 rs1800896 variant AG or GG genotype less often (27.3%) than con-trols (65.5%, P=0.009). Twenty-eight infants with bronchiolitis had the variant–variant Grs1800896Trs1800890 haplotype, and none of them had rhinovirus infection. The IL10 rs1800871 or rs1800872 genotypes showed no associations with viruses. No association was found between any genotypes and bronchiolitis severity measures. Conclusion IL10 rs1800890 and rs1800896 polymorphisms differed between infants with rhinovirus bronchiolitis and con-trols, but not between infants with respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis and controls.

The innovative development of Wearable Electronics (WE) is creating exciting opportunities for application across many industries. Two sectors with high potential are healthcare and childcare. However, it is in these two sectors where the challenges of privacy are presumed to be of the highest. In order to ascertain the personal views of people about potential privacy problems in WE application in these two sectors, interviews with questionnaires were conducted in two different countries: Finland and the United kingdom (Uk). The results indicated that the majority of people in both countries are positive about the use of WE in healthcare and childcare environments. However, when more information is added to be read wirelessly, the attitudes become more negative. In general, the application of WE is more favorable in the Uk and the reason as to the difference will make for interesting further research. Several interesting viewpoints and concerns were presented in the interviews. It can be concluded that the implementation of WE in these two sectors will require the collaboration of work on several areas and the development of versatile user studies.

This paper starts with a literature survey that introduces possibilities of wearable electronics (WE) in different healthcare and childcare applications. Next, 24 personal interviews and an Internet forum survey were conducted in Finland about the use of WE in applications mentioned above. According to the results, most of the people feel positive about clothes used for wireless identification purposes in healthcare and childcare, but when more information about the person is added that can be wirelessly read, the feelings become more negative. Several important points to consider before implementation of WE for healthcare and childcare environments were brought up.

在现代科学教育中,交互式计算机模拟与实操性实验是两种重要的教学方法。已有研究未能充分阐释这两种方法的优劣,也未能对二者进行充分的比较。本文将二者作为科学教育的学习工具,在不同的学习地点(研究Ⅰ:学校;研究Ⅱ:科学中心的学生实验室)的学生间,从学科知识成绩、情境兴趣发展和认知负荷方面进行了比较研究。研究结果显示,无论学习地点在哪,使用计算机模拟的学生比进行实操性实验的学生认知负荷更高,但学习成功率也要高。与计算机模拟(特别是当认知和价值相关时)相比,实操性实验更能促进情境兴趣。研究认为讲授复杂的话题运用计算机模拟可能更为适合。但其他相关研究发现表明,使用一种教学方法可以弥补另一种教学方法的缺陷。综合以上研究得出,最有效的方式是将这两种方法结合起来,这有助于在校内外学习环境中成功地进行现代科学教育。

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides are characterized by destruction of small vessels, granulomatous inflammation of the respiratory tract and necrotizing glomerulonephritis. This review describes the clinical diagnosis and therapy as well as the patho-physiology of ANCA-associated vasculitides with a specific focus on the interplay of ANCAs with activated neutrophils and the deleterious pathophysiological consequences of neutrophil-endothelium interaction.

Perspectives for Sharing Personal Information on Online Social Networks

The goal of this research was to study how people feel about sharing personal information on social networks. The research was done by interviews;50 people were interviewed, mostly from China's Mainland, Hong kong, and Finland. This paper presents the included 12 questions and discusses the collected answers. It was discovered, e.g., that 38 out of the 50 answerers use social media every day and share versatile personal information on the Internet. Half of the answerers also share information about other people on the Internet. It was also discovered that compared to male answerers, the female answerers were more active in sharing information about other people. There was a significant variety in opinions: what should be the age limit for sharing personal information online, while 22 out of the 50 answerers felt that there is no need for an age limit at all. According to the answers, only a few people use social media for making new friends. Instead, an important reason for using social media is that their existing friends are using. An interesting finding was that the answerers see the Internet as a part of the real world;the privacy that you have on the Internet is the privacy that you have in the real world.
