Intellectual capital and value creation in the production and assembly of vehicles and auto-parts sector in Brazil： A panel data analysis

This work investigates the relationship between intellectual capital and value creation in the sector of production and assembly of vehicles and auto-parts in Brazil. Through the access of the database from the annual industrial research conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, we gathered 865 observations, from 2000 to 2006, of public and private Brazilian companies with more than 100 employees. The database allows the estimate of relevant aggregated variables such as national accounts, gross domestic product, intermediate consumption, as well as propitiates a sectorial study of business strategies and performance, including value added by individual companies. In particular, in this study we use data on variables associated to intellectual capital. To achieve the goal of the study, we consider intellectual capital as defined by Pulic （2000, 2002）, including human capital and structural capital. For the analysis of business performance, we used Pulic＇s VAIC （Value Added Intellectual Cofficient） index as a measure of efficiency of the employed financial and intellectual capital. Regression models were run to verify the relationship among the efficiency in the use of intellectual capital and the profitability of Brazilian companies. The gross income, calculated as before selling, general and administrative expenses, depreciation expenses, amortization and interest expenses, was used as measure of the flows of value creation and the profitability was measured by the gross income to the total assets of the companies. Glutaminase is used industrially to enhance flavor and aroma and to enrich foodstuffs nutritionally. It also has potential for pharmaceutical application as anti-leukemia agent. The bacteria of Zymomonas mobilis has been studied for ethanol production, however, there is no study regarding glutaminase production. The aim of the present study was to establish the influencing factors for the growth of Z mobilis and its relationship with glutaminase production using statistical tools. Analysis of variance in blocks was carried out in a complete block design and the Tukey test demonstrated the importance of the components of the culture medium, absence of agitation and fermentation time. Minimum culture medium was used in the optimization varying the glucose concentrations （10, 30, and 50 g/l）, glutamine （0, 0.5 and 1g/l） and culture time （18, 24 and 30 hours）. Maximum production was obtained at 8.86 U/l glutaminase. Optimized conditions were used in the growth kinetics, where typical exponential growth was observed. Glutaminase production was shown to be related to biomass production.

AIMTo evaluate the performance of FibroMeterVirus3G combined to the first generation tests aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI) or Forns index to assess significant fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C (CHC). METHODSFirst generation tests APRI or Forns were initially applied in a derivation population from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil considering cut-offs previously reported in the literature to evaluate significant fibrosis. FibroMeterVirus3G was sequentially applied to unclassified cases from APRI or Forns. Accuracy of non-invasive combination of tests, APRI plus FibroMeterVirus3G and Forns plus FibroMeterVirus3G was evaluated in the Brazilian derivation population. APRI plus FibroMeterVirus3G combination was validated in a population of CHC patients from Angers in France. All patients were submitted to liver biopsy staged according to METAVIR score by experienced hepatopathologists. Significant fibrosis was considered as METAVIR F ≥ 2. The fibrosis stage classification was used as the reference for accuracy evaluation of non-invasive combination of tests. Blood samples for the calculation of serum tests were collected on the same day of biopsy procedure or within a maximum 3 mo interval and stored at -70 °C. RESUlTSSeven hundred and sixty CHC patients were included (222 in the derivation population and 538 in the validation group). In the derivation population, the FibroMeterVirus3G AUROC was similar to APRI AUROC (0.855 vs 0.815, P = 0.06) but higher than Forns AUROC (0.769, P Virus3G cut-off to discriminate significant fibrosis was 0.61 (80% diagnostic accuracy; 75% in the validation population, P = 0.134). In this study,the fibers of invasive species Agave americana *** Ricinus communis *** successfully used for the first time as new sources to produce cytocompatible and highly crystalline cellulose *** nanofibers were obtained by two methods,based on either alkaline or acid *** morphology,chemical composition,and crystallinity of the obtained materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)together with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX),dynamic light scattering(DlS),X-ray diffraction(XRD),and Fourier transform infrared(FTIR)*** crystallinity indexes(CIs)of the cellulose nanofibers extracted from *** and *** were very high(94.1%and 92.7%,respectively).Biological studies evaluating the cytotoxic effects of the prepared cellulose nanofibers on human embryonic kidney 293 T(HEK293 T)cells were also *** nanofibers obtained using the two different extraction methods were all shown to be cytocompatible in the concentration range assayed(i.e.,0-500μg/ml).Our results showed that the nanocellulose extracted from *** and *** fibers has high potential as a new renewable green source of highly crystalline cellulose-based cytocompatible nanomaterials for biomedical applications.

Transgene insert location in the genome through different methods is random. Thus, alterations in the expression of desired trait may occur, as well as alterations in the expression of other characteristics of receptor plant. The purpose of this study was to compare Bt transgenic maize hybrids and the respective conventional isogenic hybrid in relation to adaptability and phenotypic stability. Field trails were set up in four locations of Minas Gerais, Brazil (Campo do Meio, lavras, Madre de Deus and Paragua?u). A randomized complete block design was used, with three replications, and the treatment structure was a factorial 6 × 2, with six hybrids in the transgenic and conventional versions. Plant and ear height and grain yield were evaluated. To estimate stability, the Anicchiarico, Wricke and AMMI methodologies were used. Grain yield and ear height of the transgenic hybrids and their respective conventional isogenic hybrid did not differ. There are differences in the phenotypic stability between transgenic hybrids with Bt technology and their counterpart conventional isogenic hybrid.

Physical Properties and Heat Transfer of Tectona grandis l.f. Wood

Tectona grandis l.f. （teak） is native to the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia, and today is grown in almost every tropical region, for the physical and mechanical properties of its wood. Also, important qualitative aspects render it one of the most expensive wood species in the world. This work presents a study about the physical properties and heat transfer of T. grandis wood from plantations in ***, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Six trees planted at three different intervals were used--two from each planting density--selected at random and with good phytosanitary characteristics, as well as having representative diameters and heights. The following properties were determined： basic and apparent densities, volume contraction, heat transfer and fiber saturation point. The basic and apparent mean general density of the samples was 0.48 g/cm3 and 0.55 g/cm3, respectively. The mean volume contraction of the teak wood was 8.57%. With decreased levels of wood humidity, loss of volume and planting effects were not significant at 5% probability. Mean heat transfer was 7.3 h/cm and the wood fiber saturation point was 17.25%, below the range found in literature, and there was no influence of the planting density on this property. According to the results, it was concluded that planting density significantly influenced the base density of the wood; the same effect does not occur for the other physical properties, and with respect to heat transfer, the wood was considered difficult to dry.

This paper focuses on the interpretations in the analyses of palynofacies and organic geochemistry carried out on a sedimentary profile covering 9542 cal yr BP from a pond located at the mining district from Ametista do Sul, southernmost Brazil. The hydrological isolation renders this pond, located on a hilltop, highly sensitive to climatic change because the water entering in the system is subsidized exclusively by the rainfall. The main goal of this study is to establish relationships between the sedimentary organic record and climatic fluctuations in the Holocene, trying to correlate the alterations in the particulate organic matter with regional climatic changes or perhaps even events on a global scale. Fluctuations in water depth are inferred from the frequency of the autochthonous elements (algae), which predominate in the basal intervals, but tend to decrease progressively toward the top, when begining to alternate periods of high and low frequency with the parautochthonous (spores) and allochthonous (pollen grains) elements, due to changes in the patterns of moisture. Pseudoschizaea seems to have a closer relationship with the spores than with all other algae and can serve as a biological marker of transitional intervals or have some role in the successional process of vegetation. The variety of spores of ferns and pollen grains on the topmost interval indicates increased vegetal diversity, and is probably related to the process of successional evolution of the area. An increased rainfall event detected between 8.6 to 7.4 ka yr BP can be responsible for the beginning of the process of water accumulation in the gossan and sedimentation of the pond and can be related with the “Bond Events”. The saturation level of the pond, in turn, remained relatively constant until 6.8 ka yr BP, when changes in the patterns of moisture make the environment drier and resulted in an intermittent pattern of water depth, currently existing on the site.
