Effects of Ving Tsun sticking-hand training on upper-limb sensorimotor performance in community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults: A randomized controlled trial

Objective:To evaluate the effects of Ving Tsun(VT)sticking-hand training on upper-limb joint position sense and muscular performance in community-dwelling middle-aged and older ***:Thirty-three adults were randomly allocated to either a VT group or a control *** VT group received VT sticking-hand training twice per week for 3 *** were taken before and after the intervention *** primary outcome was elbow-joint repositioning error,which was measured by an elbow-joint passive positioning and active repositioning test using a universal *** outcomes were upper-limb muscles'peak force and time taken to reach peak force as measured by a hand-held ***:No significant time,group or time-by-group interaction effects were found for elbow-joint repositioning error or upper-limb muscle peak force *** flexor time to peak force decreased by 33.8%from pre-test to post-test in the VT group(P=0.007).Shoulder abductor,internal and external rotator,and elbow extensor times to peak force decreased by 30.0%-35.9%in the VT%roup(Py 30.4%-37.1%in the control group(Pw-joint position sense or the maximum strength of upper-limb muscles in middle-aged and older ***,VT can improve shoulder flexor muscles'time to reach peak force in these *** had no obvious effect on the time required to reach peak force in other shoulder muscles and elbow extensors.

Formation potential and analysis of 32 regulated and unregulated disinfection by-products: Two new simplified methods

water disinfection is an essential process that provides safe water by inactivating pathogens that cause waterborne diseases. However, disinfectants react with organic matter naturally present in water, leading to the formation of disinfection by-products(DBPs). Multi-analyte methods based on mass spectrometry(MS) are preferred to quantify multiple DBP classes at once however, most require extensive sample pre-treatment and significant resources. In this study, two analytical methods were developed for the quantification of 32 regulated and unregulated DBPs. A purge and trap(P&T) coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry(GC-MS) method was optimized that automated sample pre-treatment and analyzed volatile and semi-volatile compounds, including trihalomethanes(THMs), iodinated trihalomethanes(I-THMs), haloacetonitriles(HANs), haloketones(HKTs) and halonitromethanes(HNMs). LOQs were between 0.02-0.4 μg/L for most DBPs except for 8 analytes that were in the low μg/L range. A second method with liquid chromatography(LC) tandem mass spectrometry(MS/MS) was developed for the quantification of 10 haloacetic acids(HAAs) with a simple clean-up and direct injection. The LC-MS/MS direct injection method has the lowest detection limits reported(0.2-0.5 μg/L). Both methods have a simple sample pre-treatment, which make it possible for routine analysis. Hyperchlorination and uniform formation conditions(UFC) formation potential tests with chlorine were evaluated with water samples containing high and low TOC. Hyperchlorination formation potential test maximized THMs and HAAs while UFC maximized HANs. Ascorbic acid was found to be an appropriate quencher for both analytical methods. Disinfected drinking water from four water utilities in Alberta, Canada were also evaluated.

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans accurately predict differing body fat content in live sheep

Background: There is considerable interest in implementing mobile scanning technology for on-farm body composition analysis on live *** experiments evaluated the use of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA) as an accurate method of total body fat measurement in live ***: In Exp.1,visceral and whole body fat analysis was undertaken in sheep with body condition scores(BCS)in the range 2 to 3.25(scale 1: thin to 5: fat).The relationship of BCS was moderately correlated with visceral fat depot mass(r = 0.59,P whole body fat(r = 0.70,P with BCS in the range 2.25 to 3.75 were blood sampled to analyse circulating leptin concentrations,and were DXA scanned immediately post mortem for total body *** leptin concentrations had low correlations with BCS(r = 0.50,P y fat(r = 0.42,P with chemical body fat(r = 0.17,P > 0.05,n = 9).There was a moderate correlation between DXA body fat and BCS(r = 0.70,P y fat was highly correlated with chemical body fat(r = 0.81,P week intervals,was performed on growing sheep over a 32-week *** average BCS ranged from 2.39 ± 0.07(S.E.M.) to 3.05 ± 0.11 and the DXA body fat(%) ranged from 16.8 ± 0.8 to 24.2 ± *** was a moderate correlation between DXA body fat and BCS over the 32 weeks(r = 0.61,P was good agreement between BCS,DXA and chemical analysis for measuring total body fat in sheep,and that DXA scanning is a valid method for longitudinal measurement of total body fat in live sheep.

Associations of social participation, demographic, socioeconomic and disease factors with nutritional risk in a group of older Hong Kong adults

Aims: To identify the impact of social participation, socio-demographic, socio-economic and disease factors on nutritional risk among older persons in Hong Kong. Background: Few published work has investigated the relative risks of social participation, demographic, socioeconomic and disease factors with malnutrition in community-living older people, this study is to investigate the associations of these risk factors on the nutritional status in better nutrition support for the old age group. Design: A crosssectional study. Methods: It was a secondary analysis of a database in a mobile community centre between January 2008 and December 2009. One thousand seven hundred and thirty one participants aged between 54 and 103 were collected. with 319 full Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) completed, the participants’ demographic, socio-economic data, diseases, and nutritional status were analyzed with relative risk and 95% confidence interval level to identify the factors that make them vulnerable to nutritional risk. Results: The prevalence of malnutrition in the community-dwelling old was 3.95% and 83.7% of the sample was at risk of malnutrition. Living on allowances, young old who was socially engaged and good relationship with family members were at less risk to malnutrition. Conclusions: Special attention should be taken to these groups as they are prone to develop malnutrition.

Develop a Participatory Model in Nutrition Education to Prevent Childhood Obesity

Purpose: To investigate the effect of nutrition education and the engagement of students, parents and teachers in addressing school-specific environmental influences in eating problem. Design: This study adopted the action research process of diagnosing, action planning, taking action, evaluating, and specifying learning. Each of obese and non-obese male and female students was randomly selected based on physical screening based on obesity criteria. Dietary intake records were taken over seven days as the pre-intervention period. These four students, one of each of their parents and the teacher from the primary school, were given 3 sessions of nutrition education. After the nutrition education, dietary intake records were taken over the subsequent 7 days as the post-intervention period. Lunch observation and lunch menu review were included to identify eating problem of primary school children in school level. Findings: Students were found to consume less whole grains and more food items belonged to the “limited” and “strongly discouraged” as set in government lunch guidelines. Students’ dietary intakes before and after the nutrition education were found improved in their energy intake (p = 0.012), total fat, saturated fat, calcium, sodium, and cholesterol. Conclusion: A participatory model in elementary nutrition education could be effective.

目的了解乳腺癌患者的疼痛感受和生活质量状况,评估疼痛对生活质量的影响程度。方法采用中国人癌症疼痛评估工具(Chinese Cancer Pain Assessment Tool,CCPAT)和生活质量调查问卷(第3版)[EORTIC QLQ-C30(Version 3)]对200例乳腺癌患者进行横断面设计的面对面问卷调查。结果200例乳腺癌患者中有疼痛者84例(42%),无疼痛者116例(58%)。疼痛组患者疼痛评分高于非疼痛组患者评分(P0.05);疼痛组患者的疼痛评分与整体生活质量评分呈显著负相关(r=–0.731,P<0.001)。结论疼痛对乳腺癌患者的躯体功能、角色功能和社会功能有一定的负面影响;患者受疼痛的冲击加重时,其整体生活质量降低。

Cavity Ring Down Laser Absorption Spectroscopy of Nil

The absorption spectrum of NiI between 445 and 510 nm has been investigated using the technique of laser vaporization/reaction with free jet expansion and cavity ring down laser absorption spectroscopy. Two new transitions namely,[21.3]^2△5/2-X^2△5/2 and [21.9]^2Ⅱ3/2-X^2△5/2 systems were identified and studied. Spectra of both ^58NiI and ^60NiI isotopic molecules were observed. Equilibrium molecular constants for both electronic states are reported and the equilibrium bond length for the [21.3]^2△5/2 state and the[21.9]^2Ⅱ3/2 state was respectively determined to be 2.431 and 2.481 A.

By,shifting the way we view the situation, and articulating an integrative approach, the barriers to pain manage-ment can be handled in a better way.

In this paper, the design, customization and implem en tation of an integrated Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) system for a Semi conductor Backend Assembly environment is described. The company is one of the w orldwide market leaders in semiconductor packaging technology. The project was d riven by the company’s quest to achieve a competitive edge as a manufacturing po werhouse by providing the shortest possible cycle time with a high degree of fle xibility through the application of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) tech nology. Gintic was responsible for the Planning & Scheduling functions through o ur APS tool kit, which is called Gintic Scheduling System (GSS). Our APS system is to be integrated with the other two key software systems, namely, the Enterpr ise Resource Planning (ERP) and Manufacturing Execution System (MES), with the C IM framework. The project was divided into four major execution phases. Phase One activities w ere focused on the gathering and analysis of the end users requirements in order to establish the ’As-Is’ situation and the wish list & the expectation of the ’To-Be’ system. Planning and Scheduling prototypes were built using GSS to iden tify the functionality gap between the existing GSS system and the ’To-Be’ mode l, in order to determine the customization effort needed. The project team perfo rmed detailed system analysis, design and development of the ’To-Be’ system dur ing Phase Two of the project. There are a total of four planning and scheduling modules, including Capacity Planning (CP), Daily Lot Release (DLR), Daily Produc tion Scheduling (DPS) and Dynamic Operation Scheduling (DOS). The detailed desig n specifications of each of the features and functionality were confirmed and ac cepted by the end users before the commencement of the development effort. The c ompleted and tested modules were delivered in stages for testing and acceptance by the end user during the Phase Three of the project. Pilot product line was
