Using MutPred derived mtDNA load scores to evaluate mtDNA variation in hypertension and diabetes in a two-population cohort：The SABPA study

Mitochondrial DNA（mt DNA） variation has been implicated in many common complex diseases, but inconsistent and contradicting results are common. Here we introduce a novel mutational load hypothesis, which also considers the collective effect of mainly rare variants, utilising the Mut Pred *** apply this new methodology to investigate the possible role of mt DNA in two cardiovascular disease（CVD） phenotypes（hypertension and hyperglycaemia）, within a two-population cohort（n = 363; mean age 45 ± 9 yrs）. Very few studies have looked at African mt DNA variation in the context of complex disease, and none using complete sequence data in a well-phenotyped cohort. As such, our study will also extend our knowledge of African mt DNA variation, with complete sequences of Southern Africans being especially under-represented. The cohort showed prevalence rates for hypertension（58.6%） and prediabetes（44.8%）. We could not identify a statistically significant role for mt DNA variation in association with hypertension or hyperglycaemia in our cohort. However, we are of the opinion that the method described will find wide application in the field, being especially useful for cohorts from multiple locations or with a variety of mt DNA lineages, where the traditional haplogroup association method has been particularly likely to generate spurious results in the context of association with common complex disease.

long-term changes and periodicity of ice phenomena in the high mountain lake Morskie Oko(Tatra Mountains,Western Carpathians)

Experimental,analytical and numerical studies on concrete encased trapezoidally web profiled cold-formed steel beams by varying depth-thickness ratio

Role of gap junctions in endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor-mediated vasodilatation in rat renal artery

AIM: To investigate the effect of cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) inhibitor roscovitine on the morphine antinociceptive tolerance development in rats. METHODS: Tail-flick test as pain threshold measurement and intrathecal injection techniques were used. RESUlTS: Intrathecal roscovitine infusion alone produced an antinociceptive effect. Tolerance was induced by continuous intrathecal infusion of morphine 5μg/h for 5 d. Co administration of intrathecal roscovitine 1μg/h for 5 d enhanced the morphine antinociceptive effect in tolerant rats. It also caused a shift in the morphine antinociceptive dose"Cresponse curve to the left when co-administered with morphine during tolerance induction, and caused a 67 % reduction in the increase in the ED50 of morphine (dose producing 50 % of the maximum response). CONClUSION: Cdk5 modulation is involved in the antinociceptive tolerance of morphine. Intrathecal roscovitine administration could attenuate this tolerance development.

Population dynamics and condition index of natural stock of blood cockle,Tegillarca granosa(Mollusca,Bivalvia,Arcidae)in the Marudu Bay,Malaysia

Nitrogen removal from wastewater and bacterial diversity in activated sludge at different COD/N ratios and dissolved oxygen concentrations

The impact of the organic carbon to nitrogen ratio （chemical oxygen demand （COD）/N） in wastewater and dissolved oxygen （DO） concentration on carbon and nitrogen removal efficiency, and total bacteria and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria （AOB） communities in activated sludge in constantly aerated sequencing batch reactors （SBRs） was determined. At DO of 0.5 and 1.5 mg O2/l during the aeration phase, the efficiency of ammonia oxidation exceeded 90%, with nitrates as the main product. Nitrification and denitrification achieved under the same operating conditions suggested the simultaneous course of these processes. The most effective nitrogen elimination （above 50%） was obtained at the COD/N ratio of 6.8 and DO of 0.5 mg O2/l. Total bacterial diversity was similar in all experimental series, however, for both COD/N ratios of 6.8 and 0.7, higher values were observed at DO of 0.5 mg O2/l. The diversity and abundance of AOB were higher in the reactors with the COD/N ratio of 0.7 in comparison with the reactors with the COD/N of 6.8. For both COD/N ratios applied, the AOB population was not affected by oxygen concentration. Amplicons with sequences indicating membership of the genus Nitrosospira were the determinants of variable technological conditions.

leptin/leptin receptor system in the regulation of reproductive functions and stress response in the European beaver

The European beaver (Castor fiber l.) is the largest free-living rode nt in Eurasia. The prese nt work aimed to determi ne sex- and seas on-related cha nges in leptin receptor (Ob-R) expression in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal/adrenal axes and uterus of beavers during breeding-(April), postbreeding-(July), and pre-breeding-(November) periods. The expression of Ob-R gene and protein was found in all analyzed tissues. The expression of Ob-R mRNA remained constant in the hypothalamus of both sexes during the analyzed stages. Sex- and season-related changes were found in the pituitary gland;the greatest level was observed in July in both sexes. The same expression pattern was noted in the testis, whereas in the ovary a lack of seasonal changes was found. In uterine tissues, the greatest expression occurred in November. The impact of season was also demonstrated in the adrenal cortex. In females, a higher Ob-R transcript level was noted in April, while in males, an increased mRNA abundanee was noted in November than July. Our study suggests that in the beaver, leptin acting via the Ob-R can be an important endocrine factor engaged in the regulation of reproductive functions and stress response.
