Diabetes and obesity are major health hazards in Latin America nowadays. Their prevalence has steadily increased since the eighties. Today, more than 50% of the population are overweight, 15% has obesity and 6% to 15% has diabetes. The nutrition transition is a long-term process that brings chronic metabolic diseases as an undesired consequence, whilst ultra processed foods become increasingly part of daily food choices. These changes bring impacts in all fields of daily life, especially in the economic and legal fields—the “Right to Health”—and regarding autonomy of the individual and their choices, when confronted with an ideal of health and well-being. Governments and citizens struggle to propose new pathways and find effective solutions to control both epidemics and solve these issues. This article poses the evolution of diabetes and obesity in the Mercosur, seeking a better understanding of these chronic, non-communicable diseases, and looking for concrete, effective solutions towards health in South America.

The continuous assessment of child health services generates knowledge about the real needs of health services and actions in order to achieve better results and indicators. Thus, this study proposes to analyze child health indicators, based on the information systems of health services. This is a descriptive, ecological epidemiological study carried out using secondary data from the following information systems: Information System on Live Births and Mortality Information System, in a historical series of ten years (2005-2014) of the state of Rio Grande do Norte and its health micro regions. It was observed a decrease in infant, neonatal, preterm, late neonatal and postnatal mortality coefficients when compared to the first and last year of the observed period, as well as the concentration of these in micro-regions of health. There was also a positive association between the early neonatal component and infant death. In this perspective, it is important to evaluate the quality of prenatal care, childbirth, puerperium, the first week of integral health and follow-up of the child’s growth and development, as well as to relate the socio-demographic conditions that may be associated with infant morbimortality. Therefore, the importance of situational health assessment studies for the effectiveness of care provided is highlighted, identifying weaknesses and monitoring the effectiveness of strategies.

The objective was to study the effect of alginate coating on polyphenol oxidase (PPo) activity and colour of ‘Starking’ apple cubes during dehydration with hot air. Apple cubes were dehydrated at 20oC, 35oC, or 40oC, with a parallel airflow. Analysis of PPo activity, colour (L*, a*, b*) and dry matter were performed along the dehydration process at each temperature. All samples presented a peak in relative PPo activity in the beginning of the drying. Exponential models fitted well the experimental data after the peak. Cubes without coating presented lower PPo activity, suggesting lower browning, than coated samples throughout the dehydration process, for all temperatures. Better results for coated samples were obtained with a perpendicular airflow drying at 40oC, after dipping the whole apple in water at 60oC for 10 min. In order to prevent coated samples from browning, drying by perpendicular airflow preceded by a thermal treatment of the whole apple is required.

AIM To study the differences in immune response and cytokine profile between acute liver failure and selflimited acute *** Forty-six patients with self-limited acute hepatitis(AH), sixteen patients with acute liver failure(ALF), and twenty-two healthy subjects were involved in this study. The inflammatory and anti-inflammatory products in plasma samples were quantified using commercial enzyme-linked immunoassays and quantitative real-time PCR. The cellular immune responses were measured by proliferation assay using flow cytometry. The groups were divided into viral- and non-viral-induced selflimited AH and ALF. Thus, we worked with five groups: Hepatitis A virus(HAV)-induced self-limited acute hepatitis(HAV-AH), HAV-induced ALF(HAV-ALF), nonviral-induced self-limited acute hepatitis(non-viral AH), non-viral-induced acute liver failure(non-viral ALF), and healthy subjects(HC). Comparisons among HAV and non-viral-induced AH and ALF were *** The levels of mitochondrial DNA(mt DNA) and the cytokines investigated [interleukin(IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10, interferon gamma, and tumor necrosis factor] were significantly increased in ALF patients, independently of etiology(P ociated with ALF [mt DNA: oR = 320.5(95%CI: 14.42-7123.33), P oR = 18.8(95%CI: 1.38-257.94), P = 0.028] and death [mt DNA: oR = 12.1(95%CI: 2.57-57.07), P = 0.002; and IL-10: oR = 8.01(95%CI: 1.26-50.97), P = 0.027]. Dermatomycoses are a group of diseases worldwide distributed and affect skin, hair and nails. Several fungal species can be envolved and keratinophilic fungi belonging to the genera Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton are very common. These infections are globally distributed and their incidence has progressively increased. Despite their high incidence, few studies have been carried out in HIV-infected patients, regarding frequency, clinical presentations, and species identification. This study aimed to evaluate some epidemiological and clinical aspects of dermatophytosis in HIV-infected patients and to attempt phenotypical and molecular characteristics of their agents. of 398 patients included, 306 were HIV-infected. Clinical data and samples of skin, hair and nail lesions were simultaneously obtained. The dermatophytes yielded in culture were phenotypically identified and evaluated by ITS-RFLP and ITS (Internal Transcribed Space) sequencing. Dermatophytes frequency in HIV-infected patients with cutaneous lesions was 11.76% similar to the 15.22% observed in non-HIV individuals. Trichophyton rubrum was the most common isolated species in both groups. Throught ITS-RFLP, 29/32 (90.63%) of dermatophytes isolates were identified at the species level. From the 10 isolates randomly selected for ITS sequencing, seven confirmed the ITS-RFLP results while three Trichophyton sp. were not identified as dermatophytes. The identification of these species in HIV-infected patients is highly desirable in order to improve the knowledge of their frequency, geographical distribution and relation to clinical presentation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate morphometric and hematological parameters of juveniles Piracanjubas treated with two distinct photoperiod. Twenty nine fish with 100 g, in a factorial design were performed in 18 h light：6 h dark （18L：6D） and 6L：lSD two different photoperiod, and morphometric and hematological parameters were evaluated at 45 d and 90 d after photoperiod treatment. Benzocaine 1% was used for euthanasia. Fish were weighed and measured, so as visceral fat, liver and gonads. Hematocrit, total count of white cells, lymphocytes and neutrophils were counted. Results showed that there was no significant relationship between bodyweight and standard length. Significant interaction （P = 0.00018） had been found between the fat index （FI） and gonado-somatic index （GSI） and the photoperiod and time. At 90 d, the fish kept in 18L：6D had a lower rate of fat than the fish kept in 6L：18D （P 〈 0.05）. The GSI was higher in the group 6L.＇18D compared with the 18L：6D （P 〈 0.005）. There was no interaction between photoperiod and period of treatment for total leukocyte count, however with 90 d, the total leukocyte count was decreased （P 〈 0.05）. Moreover, decrease of the hematocrit from 58.1% to 46.9% and an increase of lymphocytes from 31.5% to 43.5% had been found in fish kept in 18L：6D after 90 d （P 〈 0.05）. Fish kept in 6L：ISD presented an increase in segmented neutrophils and lymphocytes （P 〈 0.05）. It is concluded that photoperiod maintained at 6L： 18D for Piracanjubas permits a greater gonadal development and an amount of immune cells over the photoperiod maintained in 18L： 6D.
