Altitude as environmental filtering influencing phylogenetic diversity and species richness of plants in tropical mountains

Elucidating how multiple factors affect biodiversity and plant community assembly is a central issue in ecology,especially in vulnerable ecosystems such as tropical *** studies are more relevant in global warming scenarios that induce the upward displacement of plant species towards reduced habitats and hostile environments in tropical *** study aimed to analyze how altitude affects taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity in plant communities of tropical ***,we tested if(i)increased altitude works as an environmental filtering promoting decreased species richness,decreased phylogenetic diversity,and increased phylogenetic clustering in these tropical mountains;and if(ii)plant communities of high altitude in tropical mountains are also result of recent diversification with plant species recently split shortening phylogenetic distances between closest related *** tested effects of altitude on species richness and phylogenetic metrics using linear mixed-effects *** haleakala presented 114 species,Mount Kilimanjaro presented 231 species and Mount Purace presented 280 *** found an environmental filtering effect with increasing altitude causing phylogenetic clustering,decreased phylogenetic diversity and decreased species *** decreasing phylogenetic distances between closest relatives are congruent with neo-endemics,suggesting recent plant diversification in high altitudes of tropical mountains,possibly driven by geographic isolation and environmental *** of global warming should be monitored in tropical mountains focusing on distribution shifts.

drought stress is major abiotic stress that affects soybean ***,it is widely desirable that soybean becomes more tolerant to *** provide insights into regulatory mechanisms of the stress response,we compared the global gene expression profiles from leaves of two soybean genotypes that display different responses to water-deficit(BR 16 and Embrapa 48,drought-sensitive and droughttolerant,respectively).After the RNA-seq analysis,a total of 5335 down-regulated and 3170 up-regulated genes were identified in the *** the other hand,the number of genes differentially expressed was markedly lower in the Embrapa 48,355 up-regulated and 471 down-regulated ***,induction and expression of protein kinases and transcription factors indicated signaling cascades involved in the drought ***,the results suggest that the metabolism of pectin is differently modulated in response to drought stress and may play a role in the soybean defense mechanism against *** occurs via an increase of the cell wall plasticity and crosslink,which contributed to a higher hydraulic conductance(Kf)and relative water content(RWC%).The drought-tolerance mechanism of the Embrapa 48 genotype involves remodeling of the cell wall and increase of the hydraulic conductance to the maintenance of cell turgor and metabolic processes,resulting in the highest leaf RWC,photosynthetic rate(A),transpiration(E)and carboxylation(A/Ci).Thus,we concluded that the cell wall adjustment under drought is important for a more efficient water use which promoted a more active photosynthetic metabolism,maintaining higher plant growth under drought stress.

High-precision geochronology of Mesozoic magmatism in macao,Southeast China:Evidence for multistage granite emplacement

Six new high precision U-Pb zircon ID-TIMS ages plus thirteen in situ high spatial resolution U-Pb zircon LA-MC-ICPMS ages are reported from Jurassic plutonic(metaluminous to weakly peraluminous biotite granites)and Jurassic to Cretaceous hypabyssal(dacites)rocks from *** its relatively small area(~30 km^2),the new ages tightly constrain the macao granitic magmatism to two periods ranging from 164.5±0.6 ma to 162.9±0.7 ma and 156.6±0.2 ma to 155.5±0.8 ma,separated by ca.6 *** zircons point to the existence of a basement with ages up to Paleo-Proterozoic and late Archean in the *** addition,younger dacitic rocks were dated at 150.6±0.6 ma andma.U-Pb zircon ages and whole-rock REE data of macao granites indicate that the first pulse is also represented in Hong Kong and Southeast(SE)China,while magmatism with the chemical characteristics of the second pulse seems to not be represented outside *** two granitic magmatic pulses have distinct mineralogical and geochemical features that support their discrete nature rather than a continuum of comagmatic activity and suggest that the macao granitic suite was incrementally assembled during a period of ca.9 ma,a hypothesis also extendable to the neighboring Hong Kong region for a time lapse of ca.24 *** macao,the transition from granitic magmatism(Middle to Upper Jurassic)to the younger dacite dykes(Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous)most likely corresponds to a change in the regional tectonic setting,from an extensional regime related with foundering of the subducting paleoPacific plate during the Early Yanshanian period to the reestablishment of a normal subduction system in SE China during the Late Yanshanian period.

Sensor-based physical activity, sedentary time, and reported cell phone screen time: A hierarchy of correlates in youth

Background:Evidence on correlates relies on subjective metrics and fails to include correlates across all levels of the ecologic *** determined which correlates best predict sensor-based physical activity(PA),sedentary time(ST),and self-reported cell phone screen time(CST)in a large sample of youth,while considering a multiplicity of ***:Using sensor-based accelerometry,we assessed the PA and ST of 2179 youths.A χ^2 automatic interaction detection algorithm was used to hierarchize the correlates associated with too much ST(>50th percentile),insufficient moderate-to-vigorous PA(MVPA)(olonged CST(≥2 h/day).Results:Among youth 10-14 years old,the correlates for being inactive consisted of being a girl,not having sport facilities in the neighborhood,and not perceiving the neighborhood as a safe place,whereas in the youth 15-18 years old,the correlate for being inactive was not performing sports(9.7%chance of being active).The correlates for predicting high ST in the younger group was not performing sports(55.8%chance for high ST),and in the older group,the correlates were not owning a pet,perceiving the neighborhood as safe,and having inactive parents(63.7%chance for high ST).In the younger group,the greatest chances of having high CST were among those who were in the last elementary school years,who were girls,and who did not have friends in the neighborhood(73.1%chance for high CST),whereas in the older group,the greatest chance for having high CST was among those who were girls and had a TV in the bedroom(74.3%chance for high CST).Conclusion:To counteract ST and boost MVPA among youths,a specific focus on girls,the promotion of sport participation and facilities,neighborhood safety,and involvement of family must be prioritized.

Keloid of Ears: Recurrence and Its Complications

In this case report, we present a male patient who arrived at the hospital for the first time at the age of 8 with giant keloids in both ears and diagnosed by the dermatology and Plastic Surgery as having the “Disease of jorge Lobo”, which is a fungal infection due to the story of the endemic characteristics. After the first surgical intervention, he received guidance from the team for keloids and left the hospital using elastic mesh and a request to change the place where he lived to reduce his contact with the fungi. Fourteen years later, the patient returned to the Plastic Surgery Service having even larger keloids in both ears, twice the size than the first time. We did the second surgical intervention to remove it, but with the patient’s commitment that he would correctly comply with the guidelines determined by the surgical team. After finishing all the steps and a post-operative for the case, we observed the satisfaction and the increase of the patient’s mood, happier and without the embarrassment of that physical defect.

Fluorescence of Chlorophyll a for Discovering Inhibitors of Photosynthesis in Plant Extracts

Aims: Twelve crude extracts were prepared from different parts of Pluchea sagittalis, Cecropia palmata and Brachiaria brizantha, and their effect on the light reaction of photosynthesis. Study design: Use of fluorescence of ChL a (Chlorophyll a) to detect inhibitors of photosynthesis in plant extracts. Place and Duration of Study: Instituto de Ciências Ambientais, Químicas e Farmacêuticas, departamento de Ciências Exatas e da Terra, Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo (UNIFESP), between July 2015 and January 2016. Methodology: The samples had their effect on the light reaction of photosynthesis studied by Chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence transient by the use of chloroplasts isolated from spinach leaves. As negative controls we used the same amounts of DMSo that have been employed to solubilize the samples, and as positive control we have used 10 μM of the commercial herbicide DCMU (Diuron). Results: The extracts inhibited the photosynthesis, and their inhibition sites were located in the range of electron flow from oEC complex and between P680 to QA of PS II, and inhibited the photosystem II (PS II) by inducing the appearance of the transient bands K and J. Conclusion: our results suggest an indicative that the photochemical apparatus probably is failing at the donor and acceptor sides of PSII, causing damage to electron transport during the photosynthesis phenomenon.

New Screening Approach for ocular Diseases

objective: Present a new screening approach for ocular diseases. Method: Transversal, retrospective, single center study that analyzed medical records of patients from a social project on the prevention of blindness and amblyopia, which aimed at: 1) detect the main ocular disorders such as amblyopia, primary angle-closure suspect (PACS);glaucoma suspect (GS);predisposing retinal detachment lesions (PRDL);age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy (dr);2) Perform cataract diagnosis;3) Provide guidance and treatment for allergic conjunctivitis. 4) Prescribe glasses for children until 14 years of age. Participants were examined by a single specialist, holder of a post-doctoral degree in ophthalmology, with 36 years of experience and a sub-specialization in retina and vitreous. All data were analyzed in 2022. Results: The examiner diagnosed 42 cases of PACS, 21 of GS, 8 of PRDL, 14 of AMD, 3 of dr, 40 of cataract and 31 cases of allergic conjunctivitis. Thirty-three participants younger than 14 were prescribed glasses. other pathologies included retinal detachment, papilledema, corneal ulcer, suspected conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma, retinal vasculitis, strabismus, uveitis, bilateral papilla paleness and lacrimal duct obstruction. out of the 297 cases examined, 168 participants presented some type of alteration that could compromise their vision. Conclusion: The examiner’s experience and knowledge were decisive factors for the quick diagnosis, advice, screening and/or treatment of several ocular diseases. The social project results reveal that the primary care and/or the screening performed by a specialist are likely to reduce blindness cases.
