Pear pomace water extract reduces adiposity in vivo and in vitro by activating the AMPK-dependent pathway

Objective: To explore the inhibitory effect of water extract from pear pomace on abdominal fat accumulation and its underlying mechanism in high fat diet-fed animals. Methods: Three groups of male C57 BL/6 J mice were fed with a 60% kcal fat diet for 8 weeks. Pear pomace water extract(200 or 400 mg/kg body weight) was administered once daily via oral gavage. To confirm the possibility of the water extract of pear pomace acting as an activator of adenosine 5’-monophosphateactivated protein kinase(AMPK), differentiation of 3 T3-L1 preadipocytes was induced in the presence of the water extract of pear pomace with or without compound C. Body weight, food efficacy ratio, insulin resistance, and adipogenic protein expression were measured. Moreover, in the 3 T3-L1 cells, lipid content and lipogenesis-related proteins were measured using Oil Red O staining and Western blotting ***: Body weight gain and total abdominal fat weight were reduced in mice treated with pear pomace water extract. Pear pomace water extract reduced fasting blood glucose and insulin, thereby reducing the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance. It also resulted in dose-dependent decreases in triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoproteincholesterol. The protein expression of p-AMPK increased, while the expression of AMPK-downstream proteins including PPAR-γ, C/EBPα, SREBP-1 c, ACC, and FAS decreased in the adipose tissue of mice treated with pear pomace water extract. Furthermore, the inhibition of AMPK by compound C blocked pear pomace water extract-induced reduction of lipid content and the expression of lipogenesis-related genes. Conclusions: Pear pomace water extract prevents fat accumulation both in vivo and in vitro by activating AMPK.

Multi-View Multi-Modal Head-Gaze Estimation for Advanced Indoor User Interaction

Gaze estimation is one of the most promising technologies for supporting indoor monitoring and interaction ***,previous gaze estimation techniques generally work only in a controlled laboratory environment because they require a number of high-resolution eye *** makes them unsuitable for welfare and healthcare facilities with the following challenging characteristics:1)users’continuous movements,2)various lighting conditions,and 3)a limited amount of available *** address these issues,we introduce a multi-view multi-modal head-gaze estimation system that translates the user’s head orientation into the gaze *** proposed system captures the user using multiple cameras with depth and infrared modalities to train more robust gaze estimators under the aforementioned *** this end,we implemented a deep learning pipeline that can handle different types and combinations of *** proposed system was evaluated using the data collected from 10 volunteer participants to analyze how the use of single/multiple cameras and modalities affect the performance of head-gaze *** various experiments,we found that 1)an infrared-modality provides more useful features than a depth-modality,2)multi-view multi-modal approaches provide better accuracy than singleview single-modal approaches,and 3)the proposed estimators achieve a high inference efficiency that can be used in real-time applications.

Sensitivity of Snowfall Characteristics to Meteorological Conditions in the Yeongdong Region of Korea

This study investigates the characteristics of cold clouds and snowfall in both the Yeongdong coastal and mountainous regions under different meteorological conditions based on the integration of numerical modeling and three-hourly rawinsonde observations with snow crystal photographs for a snowfall event that occurred on 29−30 January *** found that rimed particles predominantly observed turned into dendrite particles in the latter period of the episode when the 850 hPa temperature decreased at the coastal site,whereas the snow crystal habits at the mountainous site were largely needle or rimed *** soundings showed a well-defined,two-layered cloud structure along with distinctive wind-directional shear,and an inversion in the equivalent potential temperature above the low-level cloud *** first experiment with a decrease in lower-layer temperature showed that the low-level cloud thickness was reduced to less than 1.5 km,and the accumulated precipitation was decreased by 87%compared with the control *** difference in precipitation amount between the single-layered experiment and control experiment(two-layered)was not so significant to attribute it to the effect of the seeder−feeder *** precipitation in the last experiment by weakening winddirectional shear was increased by 1.4 times greater than the control experiment specifically at the coastal site,with graupel particles accounting for the highest proportion(~62%).The current results would improve snowfall forecasts in complicated geographical environments such as Yeongdong in terms of snow crystal habit as well as snowfall amount in both time and space domains.
