In total knee arthroplasty (TKA), a treatment of bone defect varies depending on the location and extent of defect and requires proper surgical procedure. Metal augmentation is readily available for both femoral and tibial bone defects. We report the operative technique of modular metal augmentation using a downsized block for ambiguous proximal tibial and distal femoral bone defects in primary and revision TKA. Regarding bone defects, bone loss can be minimized by using a different size of metal augmentation, and suitable reinforcement for bone defects can be achieved. Once our technique is properly used, it will be very helpful in treating bone defects.

Perovskite oxides like S rTiO_(3) at the nanoscale are of interest for eme rging applications,including high-k dielectrics and ***,their synthesis requires long calcination at the elevated temperature,which is a barrier of their application to flexible ***,an effective laser-assisted sol-gel method to patternably produce S rTiO_(3) na noparticles(-100 nm)in selective areas on polyimide substrates(coated with ITO)is ***,the violet-laser power is just 1 W but sufficient to crystallize the material in a short period(a few seconds).Furthermore,developing a flexible device platform using carbon nanotubes(CNT)and SrTiO_(3) nanoparticles for detection of humidity changes at room temperature is *** sensor platform has both capacitive and resistive sensing *** resistive mode with a lower power usage(about 0.2μW)is suitable for long monitoring of humidity in the range of2%RH and *** capacitive mode with higher sensitivity,faster response/recovery time(1-3 min),and lower detection limit(0.5%RH)can be used for calibration *** performance of the flexible sensor is still maintained after 5000 bending cycles at 1.5-cm ***,our synthesis method and the flexible sensor show chances for mass-producing perovskite oxides at low cost for wearable electronics.

Despite significant improvements over the past several decades in diagnosis,treatment and prevention of periprosthetic joint infection(Pji),it still remains a major challenge following total joint *** the devastating nature and accelerated incidence of Pji,prevention is the most important strategy to deal with this challenging problem and should start from identifying risk *** and well-organized optimization of these risk factors in individuals before elective arthroplasty are essential to the ultimate success in reducing the incidence of *** though some risk factors such as demographic characteristics are seldom changeable,they allow more accurate expectation regarding individual risks of Pji and thus,make proper counseling for shared preoperative decision-making *** that increase the risk of Pji,but are potentially modifiable should be optimized prior to elective *** remarkable advances have been achieved in past decades,many questions regarding standardized practice to prevent this catastrophic complication remain *** current study provide a comprehensive knowledge regarding risk factors based on general principles to control surgical siteinfection by the review of current literature and also share own practice at our institution to provide practical and better understandings.

Long-term performance of fiber-grid-reinforced asphalt overlay pavements: A case study of Korean national highways

The objective of this study was to verify the effect of fiber grid reinforcement on the longterm performance of asphalt overlay pavements by performing field investigation, laboratory test, and finite element analysis. Crack, rutting, roughness, and other miscellaneous distresses of fiber-grid-reinforced overlay sections and ordinary overlay sections were compared. Pavement conditions of fiber grid overlay sections before and after the overlay were also compared. Cores were obtained from the fiber-grid-reinforced and ordinary sections to measure bonding shear strength between the intermediate and overlay *** energy, displacement after yield, and shear stiffness of the cores were also obtained by analyzing the test results. Finite element analysis was performed by using the test results to validate the effect of the fiber grid reinforcement on the long-term performance of asphalt overlay pavements. Rutting and fatigue cracking were predicted for three cases: 1) fiber grid was not used;2) glass fiber grid was used;and 3) carbon fiber grid was used. The cracking ratio of fiber-grid-reinforced sections was much smaller than that of ordinary sections. The results of field investigation, laboratory test, and finite element analysis showed that the fiber grid reinforcement improved the long-term performance of asphalt overlay pavements.

When aWindows-based system is used for an exceedingly long time,its performance degrades,and the error occurrence rate tends to *** is generally called system *** investigate the reasons for system aging,various studies have been conducted within the range of the operating system kernel to the user ***,finding an accurate reason for system performance degradation remains challenging research *** this study,system monitoring was conducted by dividing a system into‘before software installation,’‘after software installation,’and‘after software removal.’We confirmed that when a software installed in a system is removed,various system elements,such as storage and memory,are not restored to the level prior to the software ***,we established a hypothesis regarding the performance degradation of a computer system owing to repeated software installation/removal operations,investigated the correlation between system aging and repeated software installation/removal operations,and proposed a system aging analysis framework for analyzing the reason behind system *** the proposed system aging analysis framework,we aim to forcibly age a Windows-based system by repeating the software installation/removal operation by utilizing the system forced aging *** framework identifies the elements affecting system performance through a differential data analysis of the system time-series data extracted by the system performance extraction and system component snapshot ***,the aging analysis framework presented in this study is expected to be effectively utilized as an index for studying system aging.

Prostaglandin E2 （PGE2） is known to have a key role in the development of colorectal cancer, but previous experiments showed its contrasting （i.e. tumor-promoting or tu mor-suppressive） roles depending on experimental conditions. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying such contrasting roles of PG E2 in tumorigenesis, we investigated all the previous experiments and found a new signal transduction pathway mediated by retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor （ROR）α, in which PGE2/PKCα-dependent phosphorylation of RORα attenuates Wnt target gene expression in colon cancer ceils. From mathematical simulations combined with biochemical experimentation, we revealed that RORα induces a biphasic response of Wnt target genes to PGE2 stimulation through a regulatory switch formed by an incoherent feedforward loop, which provides a mechanistic explanation on the contrasting roles of PGE2 observed in previous experiments. More interestingly, we found that RORα constitutes another regulatory switch formed by coupled positive and negative feedback loops, which regulates the hysteretic response of Wnt signaling and eventually converts a proliferative cellular state into an anti-proliferative state in a very delicate way. Our results indicate that RORα is the key regulator at the center of these hidden switches that critically regulate cancer celt proliferation and thereby being a promising anti-cancer therapeutic target.

The use of IEEE 802.15.4 standard based application systems has been rapidly increasing, for example, in medical services, sensor networks, public safety systems, and home automation systems. However, issues arise from the fact that IEEE 802.15.4 standard based low rate wireless personal area networks(LR-WPANs) use the same frequency bands as wireless local area networks(WLANs), and they interfere with each other. Based on past research on this issue, the interference has a more serious impact on LR-WPANs' performance than on WLANs' performance. In this paper we propose a method to improve LR-WPANs' performance while coexisting with WLANs, which is called the reliable beacon transmission based medium access control(MAC) protocol. Since the reliability of a beacon frame is important, in this method, only the beacon frame is transmitted in interference-free channels, and the data packets are transmitted in interfered channels instead of abandoning the channels altogether. This method increases the reliability of beacon frames as well as overall channel utilizations. The effectiveness of the proposed method was evaluated through extensive simulations, and this paper proves that this method improves the performance of IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless sensor networks(WSNs) over WLANs' interferences.

An ultrathin SrTiO3 dielectric layer is optimized through Al doping to solve the problems existing in development of ultra-high-k oxide MOS *** post-deposition annealing,Al doping induces changes in the electronic structure of SrTiO3,thereby effectively reducing leakage current to 80) of ultrathin SrTMO3 MOS *** titanate(SrTiO3) is a high-k material but its bandgap is smaller than that of other oxide dielectrics(e.g.,SiO2,Al2 O3).Consequently,an ultrathin SrTiO3 film may have a high tunneling leakage current,which is not suitable for capacitor-based *** improve the performance of metal-oxide-semiconductor(MOS) capacitors using SrTiO3,an approach based on homogenous and uniform aluminum doping to SrTiO3 through co-sputtering is *** bandgap of a pristine SrTiO3 film showed an increase of 0.5 eV after Al ***,Al doping decreased the leakage current of SrTiO3/Si-based MOS capacitors by more than five orders of magnitude(at the level of nanoampere per square centimeter).Importantly,a dielectric constant of 81.3 and equivalent oxide thickness less than 5 A were achieved in an 8-nm-thick Al-doped SrTiO3 film owing to changes in its crystal structure and conduction band edge electronic ***,the obtained data show the effectiveness of the proposed approach for solving the problems existing in the development of ultra-high-k oxide MOS capacitors.

Oxidative stress is considered to be an important regulator of the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) regulate the activation of inflammatory cascades, the recruitment of inflammatory cells and tissue damage in acute pancreatitis. A hallmark of the inflammatory response in pancreatitis is the induction of cytokine expression, which is regulated by a number of signaling molecules including oxidant-sensitive transcription factors such as nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and activator protein-1 (AP-1), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). Cross-talk between ROS and pro-inflammatory cytokines is mediated by NF-κB, AP-1, STAT3, and MAPKs; this crosstalk amplifies the inflammatory cascade in acute pancreatitis. Therapeutic studies have shown that antioxidants and natural compounds can have beneficial effects for patients with pancreatitis and can also influence the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in cerulein-induced pancreatitis. Since oxidative stress may activate inflammatory signaling pathways and contribute to the development of pancreatitis, antioxidant therapy may alleviate the symptoms or prevent the development of pancreatitis. Since chronic administration of high doses of antioxidants may have deleterious effects, dosage levels and duration of antioxidant treatment should be carefully determined.
