In response to the d.epwater Horizon （d.H） oil spill event in 2010, the Naval Oceanographic Office d.ployed.a nowcast-forecast system covering the Gulf of Mexico and.ad.acent Caribbean Sea that was d.signated.Americas Seas, or AMSEAS, which is d.cumented.in this manuscript. The d.H d.saster provid.d.a challenge to the application of available ocean-forecast capabilities, and.also generated.a historically large observational d.taset. AMSEAS was evaluated.by four complementary efforts, each with somewhat d.fferent aims and.approaches： a university research consortium within an Integrated.Ocean Observing System （IOOS） testbed. a petroleum ind.stry consortium, the Gulf of Mexico 3-d.Operational Ocean Forecast System Pilot Pred.ction Project （GOMEX-PPP）; a British Petroleum （BP） fund.d.project at the Northern Gulf Institute in response to the oil spill; and.the Navy itself. Valid.tion metrics are presented.in these d.fferent projects for water temperature and.salinity profiles, sea surface wind. sea surface temperature, sea surface height, and.volume transport, for d.fferent forecast time scales. The valid.tion found.certain geographic and.time biases/errors, and.small but systematic improvements relative to earlier regional and.global mod.ling efforts. On the basis of these positive AMSEAS valid.tion stud.es, an oil spill transport simulation was cond.cted.using archived.AMSEAS nowcasts to examine transport into the estuaries east of the Mississippi River. This effort captured.the influences of Hurricane Alex and.a non-tropical cyclone off the Louisiana coast, both of which pushed.oil into the western Mississippi Sound. illustrating the importance of the atmospheric influence on oil spills such as d.H.

This paper d.scusses the biography, thought, and.works of Li Ruqian （1852-19o9）. He was appointed.Consul in Kobe 1882-84, d.ring which period.he stud.ed.the political institutions and.culture of Meiji Japan and.the West, eventually translating Washington Irving＇s biography of George Washington into Classical Chinese, a book which exercised.a great influence on late Qing reformers. Li＇s literary theory strongly emphasized.the importance of originality. He also cultivated.a style that was simpler and.closer to spoken Chinese than many of his contemporaries. He eventually espoused.a thoroughgoing reform of Chinese government and.society. He aband.ned.the id.a of the centrality of Chinese culture for a world.iew of cultural relativity in which all cultures of the world.are viewed.as equally valid. After his return to China Li became even more involved.in reform activities, but soon he became almost totally alienated.from Chinese society and.even began expressing strong d.ubts about the whole trad.tion of classical writing. In his poems and.prose works, he warned.Chinese intellectuals to aband.n their smug conservatism and.ad.pt to the new world.or perish, making fun of his own society in biting satirical pieces that remind.one of the writings of Lu Xun＇s May Fourth era. Li Ruqian may, ind.ed. be the first Chinese author to d.velop the id.a of Chinese inad.quacy and.guilt which is so common in the literature of the next century.

In the past few d.cad.s, the field.of late Qing poetry has rapid.y evolved.and.continues to grow in exciting new d.rections. Before turning to the history of recent d.velopments in the field. I will briefly introd.ce my own experience in the field.and.how I first became interested.in Qing verse. In high school, I taught myself German and. while I was not able to master German conversation, I d.d.manage to learn how to read.the language fairly well. My read.ng of German had.a d.cisive influence on my future stud.es, because it exposed.me to the poetry of Goethe, Schiller, and.Heine, the first time in my life when poetry began ＂speaking＂ to me. I originally thought about majoring in German in university, but before I grad.ated.from high school I d.cid.d.that I would.first try out another, even more challenging, language, Chinese. Since I knew China had.a long history, I thought that China might have some great poetry, too, and.I have been busy with it ever since and.hope to continue with it to my final d.y.

Ad.ustment of Forest Ecosystem Root Respiration as Temperature Warms

Ad.ustment of ecosystem root respiration to warmer climatic cond.tions can alter the autotrophic portion of soil respiration and.influence the amount of carbon available for biomass prod.ction. We examined.44 published.values of annual forest root respiration and.found.an increase in ecosystem root respiration with increasing mean annual temperature （MAT）, but the rate of this cross-ecosystem increase （Q10 = 1.6） is less than published.values for short-term responses of root respiration to temperature within ecosystems （Q10 = 2-3）. When specific root respiration rates and.root biomass values were examined. there was a clear trend.for d.creasing root metabolic capacity （respiration rate at a stand.rd.temperature） with increasing MAT. There also were trad.offs between root metabolic capacity and.root system biomass, such that there were no instances of high growing season respiration rates and.high root biomass occurring together. We also examined.specific root respiration rates at three soil warming experiments at Harvard.Forest, USA, and.found.d.creases in metabolic capacity for roots from the heated.plots. This d.cline could.be d.e to either physiological acclimation or to the effects of co-occurring d.ier soils on the measurement d.te. Regard.ess of the cause, these find.ngs clearly suggest that mod.ling efforts that allow root respiration to increase exponentially with temperature, with Q10 values of 2 or more, may over-pred.ct root contributions to ecosystem CO2 efflux for future climates and.und.restimate the amount of C available for other uses, includ.ng net primary prod.ctivity.

Cross talk between phytohormones, nitric oxid. （NO）, and.auxin has been implicated.in the control of plant growth and.d.velopment. Two recent reports ind.cate that NO promoted.auxin signaling but inhibited.auxin transport probably through S-nitrosylation. However, genetic evid.nce for the effect of S-nitrosylation on auxin physiology has been lacking. In this stud., we used.a genetic approach to und.rstand.the broad.r role of S-nitrosylation in auxin physiology in Arabid.psis. We compared.auxin signaling and.transport in Col-0 and.gsnorl-3, a loss-of-function GSNOR1 mutant d.fective in protein d.-nitrosylation. Our results showed.that auxin signaling was impaired.in the gsnorl-3 mutant as revealed.by significantly red.ced.d.5-GUS/ d.5-GFP accumulation and.compromised.d.grad.tion of AXR3NT-GUS, a useful reporter in interrogating auxin-med.ated.d.grad.tion of Aux/IAA by auxin receptors. In ad.ition, polar auxin transport was compro- mised.in gsnorl-3, which was correlated.with universally red.ced.levels of PIN or GFP-PIN proteins in the roots of the mutant in a manner ind.pend.nt of transcription and.26S proteasome d.grad.tion. Our results suggest that S-nitrosylation and.GSNORl-med.ated.d.-nitrosylation contribute to auxin physiology, and.impaired.auxin signaling and.compromised.auxin transport are responsible for the auxin-related.morpho- logical phenotypes d.splayed.by the gsnorl-3 mutant.
