A diverse range of remarkable boron n itride (BN) nano structures subsumi ng nano-homs, nano-rods, nano-platelets, and clusters of hollow nano spheres (nano-onions, arguably of greatest applied and fun damental in terest) have bee n produced exclusively from crystalline BN precursor powder via lamp ablation. The procedure is safe, devoid of toxic reagents, simple, rapid and scalable—generating some genres of nan oparticles that had previously proved elusive. Product structure and composition were unambiguously assessed by high-resoluti on transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy.

A canonical correlation analysis is a generic parametric model used in the statistical analysis of data involving interrelated or interdependent input and output *** is especially useful in data analytics as a dimensional reduction strategy that simplifies a complex,multidimensional parameter space by identifying a relatively few combinations of variables that are maximally *** shortcoming of the canonical correlation analysis,however,is that it provides only a linear combination of variables that maximizes these *** this in mind,we describe here a versatile,Monte-Carlo based methodology that is useful in identifying non-linear functions of the variables that lead to strong input/output *** demonstrate that our approach leads to a substantial enhancement of correlations,as illustrated by two experimental applications of substantial interest to the materials science community,namely:(1)determining the interdependence of processing and microstructural variables associated with doped polycrystalline aluminas,and(2)relating microstructural decriptors to the electrical and optoelectronic properties of thin-film solar cells based on CuInSe_(2) ***,we describe how this approach facilitates experimental planning and process control.

The aging population is an important issue around the world especially in developed *** med-ical advances have substantially extended life span,the same cannot be said for the duration of health *** are seeing in-creasing numbers of elderly people who are frail and/or have multiple chronic conditions;all of these can affect the quality of life of the elderly population as well as increase the burden on the healthcare *** is mechanistically related to common medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus,ischemic heart disease,cognitive decline,and frailty.A recently accepted concept termed‘Accelerated Biological Aging’can be diagnosed when a person’s biological age—as measured by biomarkers of DNA methylation—is older than their corresponding chronological ***,a conditionally essential amino acid,has received much attention in the past few years.A substantial number of animal studies have provided a strong scientific foundation sug-gesting that this amino acid can improve cellular and metabolic health,including blood glucose control,so much that it has been labelled one of the‘longevity amino acids’.In this review article,we propose the rationale that an adequately powered random-ized-controlled-trial(RCT)is needed to confirm whether taurine can meaningfully improve metabolic and microbiome health,and biological *** trial should incorporate certain elements in order to provide the much-needed evidence to guide doctors,and also the community at large,to determine whether this promising and inexpensive amino acid is useful in improving human metabolic health.

Corneal epithelial defects following vitreoretinal surgery:incidence and outcomes from the DISCOVER study

AIM:To investigate the incidence,risk factors,clinical course,and outcomes of corneal epithelial defects(CED)following vitreoretinal surgery in a prospective study ***:This was a post-hoc analysis of all participants in DISCOVER intraoperative optical coherence tomography *** with CED 1 d after surgery without intraoperative corneal debridement was defined as the postoperative CED *** who underwent intraoperative debridement were defined as intraoperative debridement *** were matched 2:1 with controls(eyes without postoperative CED)for comparative *** primary outcomes were the incidence of CED on postoperative day one and the incidence of required intraoperative *** outcomes included time to defect closure,delayed healing(>2 wk),visual acuity(VA)and presence of scarring at one year and cornea ***:This study included 856 eyes that underwent vitreoretinal *** corneal debridement was performed to 61(7.1%)subjects and postoperative CED developed spontaneously in 94(11.0%)*** factors associated with postoperative CED included prolonged surgical duration(P=0.003),diabetes mellitus(P=0.04),postoperative ocular hypotension(P2 wk)was associated with corneal scar formation at the end of the 1 y in all epithelial defect subjects(P<0.001).The overall rate of corneal scarring for all eyes undergoing vitrectomy was 1.8%.CONCLUSION:Prolonged duration of surgery is the strongest factor associated with both intraoperative debridement and spontaneous postoperative *** defect closure is associated with a greater risk of corneal scarring at one *** overall rate of corneal scarring following vitrectomy is low at<2%.

Background: Although growing evidence links beta-amyloid (Aβ) and neuronal hyperexcitability in preclinical mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a similar association in humans is yet to be established. The first aim of the study was to determine the association between elevated Aβ (Aβ+) and cognitive processes measured by the P3 event-related potential (ERP) in cognitively normal (CN) older adults. The second aim was to compare the event- related power between CNAβ+ and CNAβ−. Methods: Seventeen CNAβ+ participants (age: 73 ± 5, 11 females, Montreal Cognitive Assessment [MoCA] score 26 ± 2) and 17 CNAβ- participants group-matched for age, sex, and MOCA completed a working memory task (n-back with n = 0, 1, 2) test while wearing a 256-channel electro-encephalography net. P3 peak amplitude and latency of the target, nontarget and task difference effect (nontarget−target), and event-related power in the delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands, extracted from Fz, Cz, and Pz, were compared between groups using linear mixed models. P3 ampli-tude of the task difference effect at Fz and event-related power in the delta band were considered main outcomes. Correlations of mean Aβ standard uptake value ratios (SUVR) using positron emission tomography with P3 amplitude and latency of the task difference effect were analyzed using Pearson Correlation Coefficient r. Results: The P3 peak amplitude of the task difference effect at Fz was lower in the CNAβ+ group (P = 0.048). Simi-larly, power was lower in the delta band for nontargets at Fz in the CNAβ+ participants (P = 0.04). The CNAβ+ partici-pants also demonstrated higher theta and alpha power in channels at Cz and Pz, but no changes in P3 ERP. Strong correlations were found between the mean Aβ SUVR and the latency of the 1-back (r = − 0.69;P = 0.003) and 2-back (r = − 0.69;P = 0.004) of the task difference effect at channel Fz in the CNAβ+ group. NIOSH ground control safety research program at Spokane,Washington,is exploring applications of photogrammetry to rock mass and support monitoring. This paper describes two ways photogrammetric techniques are being used. First,photogrammetric data of laboratory testing is being used to correlate energy input and support deformation. This information can be used to infer remaining support toughness after ground deformation events. This technique is also demonstrated in a field ***,field photogrammetric data is compared to crackmeter data from a deep underground *** were found to average 8 mm,but have produced results within 0.2 mm of true displacement,as measured by crackmeters. Application of these techniques consists of monitoring overall fault activity by monitoring multiple points around the crackmeter. A case study is provided in which a crackmeter is clearly shown to have provided insufficient information regarding overall fault ground *** is proving to be a useful ground monitoring tool due to its unobtrusiveness and ease of use.

General Practitioners, Patients, and Care Givers Support the Use of a Telegeriatric Memory Disorder Consultation for Older Adults

Evidence has shown that diagnosis of dementia is reliable via video conference, but uptake of telehealth in this field has been slow. The aim of this paper was to consider the feasibility of implementing a telegeriatric memory disorder consultation as a standard clinical service and to assess stakeholder satisfaction with such a service. Method: The focus was on patient population located some distance from access to specialist services. General Practitioners (GPs) located in a remote area referred patients for a video consultation (VC) for cognitive assessment. A satisfaction survey was completed by referring GPs, patients or care givers, and the geriatrician. Results: Seven GPs agreed to participate in the pilot. Nine patients were referred for assessment, eight were diagnosed with dementia. GPs identified the specialist input as significant to patient care. Participants interacted with the specialist on a level that was comparable to a face-to-face assessment. Conclusion: It was clinically feasible to implement a telegeriatric memory disorder clinic. GPs, patients and their families living in a remote area found that a telegeriatric memory consultation was a highly satisfactory alternative to traveling to a major city for a memory assessment. Key Points: 1) GPs judged the diagnosis and recommendations by the specialist to be reliable and would recommend the service;2) Rather than travel a long distance to see a specialist, attending the appointment via video conference is a suitable alternative for geriatric cognitive assessment.

Inorganic fullerene-like WS_(2)and MoS_(2)nanoparticles have been synthesized using exclusively solid precursors,by reaction of the corresponding metal oxide nanopowder,sulfur and a hydrogen-releasing agent(NaBH4 or LiAlH4),achieved either by conventional furnace heating up to~900℃or by photothermal ablation at far higher temperatures driven by highly concentrated white *** contrast to the established syntheses that require toxic and hazardous gases,working solely with solid precursors permits relatively safer reactor conditions conducive to industrial scale-up.
