Petrogenesis, LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb geochronology and geodynamic implications of the Kribi metavolcanic rocks,Nyong Group, Congo craton

Metavolcanic rocks are well-exposed in the Kribi area within the Nyong Group, Congo craton, but their origin, age, and tectonic significance are poorly *** we report integrated field mapping and petrography,geochemistry, and LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb ages of these metavolcanic rocks to constrain their petrogenesis and geodynamic implications. The studied rocks consist of mafic granulite, garnet-amphibole gneiss, and garnet-biotite gneiss, and occur interbanded with sharp contact and intruded by syenite dyke. These metavolcanic rocks are classified as MORB-like tholeiitic to calc-alkaline basalts,basaltic andesite, and rhyodacite rocks with within-plate setting geochemical signatures. The metabasite rocks(basalt to basaltic andesite protolith) are likely the equivalent of a spinel peridotite product representing ~ 2–5 %partial melting of metasomatized mantle source, while the metarhyodacite rocks are derived from the fractional crystallization of the same parental magma. Zircon U-Pb data revealed that the rhyodacite rocks initially formed at2671 ± 51 Ma and underwent later metamorphism at2065 ± 55 Ma. The Neoarchean protolith age is comparable to the ca. 2628 Ma tholeiitic magmatism and ca.2666 Ma high-K granites, suggesting bimodal Neoarchean magmatic event within the Ntem Complex, while the metamorphic ages fall within the ca. 2100–2000 Ma highgrade tectono-metamorphic event attributed to Eburnean/Trans-Amazonian orogeny. At the regional scale,metavolcanic rocks with similar origins and ages are documented in the Sa o Francisco Craton in Brazil, suggesting comparable geodynamic evolution on both sides of the south Atlantic during the Paleoproterozoic.

Articular cartilage,which is mainly composed of collagen Ⅱ,enables smooth skeletal *** of collagen Ⅱ can be caused by various events,such as injury,but degeneration especially increases over the course of normal ***,the body does not fully repair itself from this type of degeneration,resulting in impaired ***,an articular cartilage repair surgical technique,has been commonly used in the clinic to induce the repair of tissue at damage *** stem cells(MSC)have also been used as cell therapy to repair degenerated ***,the therapeutic outcomes of all these techniques vary in different patients depending on their age,health,lesion size and the extent of damage to the *** repairing tissues either form fibrocartilage or go into a hypertrophic stage,both of which do not reproduce the equivalent functionality of endogenous hyaline *** of the reasons for this is inefficient chondrogenesis by endogenous and exogenous *** that promote chondrogenesis could be used to induce self-repair of damaged cartilage as a non-invasive approach alone,or combined with other techniques to greatly assist the therapeutic *** recent development of human induced pluripotent stem cell(iPSCs),which are able to self-renew and differentiate into multiple cell types,provides a potentially valuable cell resource for drug screening in a“more relevant”cell *** we report a screening platform using human iPSCs in a multi-well plate format to identify compounds that could promote chondrogenesis.

AIM: To assess the ability of sickle cells to interfere with the release or transfer of endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) in comparison to normal erythrocytes. METHODS: A perfusion-superfusion bioassay system was used a canine carotid artery with endothelium (donor of EDRF) and a ring of the same vessel without endothelium (detector) were separated by tubing resulting in a five second interval for transfer of EDRF from donor to detector. Changes in isometric tension were monitored in both the donor and the detector preparations. Release of EDRF, as determined by sustained relaxations during the contractions to phenylephrine, was induced by infusing acetylcho-line through the donor artery. RESULTS: Supervision with normal and sickle erythrocytes caused impairment of the endothelium-dependent relaxations in both detector and donor tissues. Saponins as adipokines modulator: A possible therapeutic intervention for type 2 diabetes

Development of type 2 diabetes has been linked to β-cell failure coupled with insulin resistance and obesity. Adipose tissue, known as the fat store, secretes a number of hormones and proteins collectively termed adipokines some of which regulate insulin sensitivity. Dysregulation in the secretion of adipokines has been linked to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. In this review, we sum-marized evidence of the role of adipokines with focus on leptin, adiponectin, adipsin, visfatin and apelin in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and discussed the potential of saponins to modify the ill-regulated adipokines secretions, which could promote the use of this class of phytochemicals as potential antidiabetics agents.

The international meeting that will be held in Xining and Lhasa in August 2004 will be a wonderful occasion to share facts and concepts dealing with adaptation to high altitude. Life at high altitude is a challenge for thousands of animal species and millions of humans residing or visiting high altitude regions of the world. To try to understand the physiological mechanisms involved in the adaptation processes to high altitude hypoxia, it is convenient to start by defining what is 'extreme' from a biological point of view.

Is Dark Matter Made up of Xons?

Three months before his untimely death in Paris in July 1912, Henri Poincaré formulated the conjecture that Planck’s action element could (should) be regarded as constituting a “véritable atome”, i.e. an “atom of motion”, whose integrity arises from the fact that the “points” it contains are equivalent to one another from the standpoint of probability. In this paper we investigate the possibility that this conjecture provides a clue to the origin and nature of dark matter.

Biology-Physics the Missing Link?

Writing in 1943, renowned Austrian physicist Edwin Schrodinger asked “What is Life?” thereby invigorating the debate which preoccupied biologists at the time. He proposed an answer to this question rooted in considerations borrowed from Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics. To reveal the missing link in Biology-Physics, the present Note investigates an alternate answer in which dynamical action, rather than thermodynamics and energy, plays the fundamental role. It reviews in particular the process of biological cell replication which may be considered to define “Life” and might be the macroscopic manifestation of an underlying quantum physical process in which xons, conveyors of dynamical action, are the determining agents.
