Gelatin based adhesives have been used in the last decades in different biomedical applications due to the excellent biocompatibility,easy processability,transparency,non-toxicity,and reasonable mechanical properties to mimic the extracellular matrix(ECM).Gelatin adhesives can be easily tuned to gain different viscoelastic and mechanical properties that facilitate its ocular *** herein grafted glycidyl methacrylate on the gelatin backbone with a simple chemical modification of the precursor,utilizing epoxide ring-opening reactions and visible *** chemical modification allows the obtaining of an elastic protein-based hydrogel(GELGYM)with excellent biomimetic properties,approaching those of the native *** can be modulated to be stretched up to 4 times its initial length and withstand high tensile stresses up to 1.95 MPa with compressive strains as high as 80%compared to Gelatin-methacryloyl(GeIMA),the most studied derivative of gelatin used as a *** is also highly biocompatible and supports cellular adhesion,proliferation,and migration in both 2 and 3-dimensional *** characteristics along with its super adhesion to biological tissues such as cornea,aorta,heart,muscle,kidney,liver,and spleen suggest widespread applications of this hydrogel in many biomedical areas such as transplantation,tissue adhesive,wound dressing,bioprinting,and drug and cell delivery.

Meiosis is a key event in gametogenesis that generates new combinations of genetic information and is required to reduce the chro- mosome content of the gametes. Meiotic chromosomes undergo a number of specialised events during prophase to allow meiotic recombination, homologous chromosome synapsis and reductional chromosome segregation to occur. In mammalian cells, DNA phys- ically associates with histones to form chromatin, which can be modified by methylation, phosphorylation, ubiquitination and acetylation to help regulate higher order chromatin structure, gene expression, and chromosome organisation. Recent studies have identified some of the enzymes responsible for generating chromatin modifications in meiotic mammalian cells, and shown that these chromatin modifying enzymes are required for key meiosis-specific events that occur during meiotic prophase. This review will discuss the role of chromatin modifications in meiotic recombination, homologous chromosome synapsis and regulation of meiotic gene expression in mammals.

AIM: To study the genesis of neointima formation in pulmonary hypertension(Ph), we investigated the role of caveolin-1 and related proteins. METhODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were given monocrotaline(M, 40 mg/kg) or subjected to hypobaric hypoxia(h) to induce Ph. Another group was given M and subjected to h to accelerate the disease process(M + h). Right ventricular systolic pressure, right ventricular hypertrophy, lung histology for medial hypertrophy and the presence of neointimal lesions were examined at 2 and 4 wk. The expression of caveolin-1 and its regulatory protein peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor(PPAR) γ, caveolin-2, proliferative and antiapoptotic factors(PY-STAT3, p-Erk, Bcl-x L), endothelial nitric oxide synthase(e NOS) and heat shock protein(hSP) 90 in the lungs were analyzed, and the results from M + h group were compared with the controls, M and h groups. Double immunofluorescence technique was used to identify the localization of caveolin-1 in pulmonary arteries in rat lungs and in human Ph lung tissue. RESULTS: In the M + h group, Ph was more severe compared with M or h group. In the 4 wk M+h group, several arteries with reduced caveolin-1 expression in endothelial layer coupled with an increased expression in smooth muscle cells(SMC), exhibited neointimal lesions. Neointima was present only in the arteries exhibiting enhanced caveolin-1 expression in SMC. Lung tissue obtained from patients with Ph also revealed neointimal lesions only in the arteries exhibiting endothelial caveolin-1 loss accompanied by an increased caveolin-1 expression in SMC. Reduction in e NOS and hSP90 expression was present in the M groups(2 and 4 wk), but not in the M + h groups. In both M groups and in the M + h group at 2 wk, endothelial caveolin-1 loss was accompanied by an increase in PPARγ expression. In this study,the activated sludge model implemented in the Biowin software was validated against full-scale wastewater treatment plant data. Only two stoichiometric parameters(Y p /acetic and the heterotrophic yield(Y h)) required calibration. The value 0.42 was used for Yp /acetic in this study,while the default value of the Biowin software is 0.49,making it comparable with the default values of the corresponding parameter(yield of phosphorus release to substrate uptake(YPO4)) used in ASM2,ASM2 d,and ASM3 P,respectively. Three scenarios were evaluated to improve the performance of the wastewater treatment plant,the possibility of wasting sludge from either the aeration tank or the secondary clarifier,the construction of a new oxidation ditch,and the construction of an equalization tank. The results suggest that construction of a new oxidation ditch or an equalization tank for the wastewater treatment plant is not necessary. however,sludge should be wasted from the aeration tank during wet weather to reduce the solids loading of the clarifiers and avoid effluent violations. Therefore,it is recommended that the design of wastewater treatment plants(wwTPs) should include flexibility to operate the plants in various modes. This is helpful in selection of the appropriate operating mode when necessary,resulting in substantial reductions in operating costs.
