End-life Prediction of Commercial PLA Used for Food Packaging through Short Term TGA Experiments: Real Chance or Low Reliability?

A long-term （about nine months） isothermal degradation experiment of two different commercial polylactide （PLA） samples used for food packaging was carried out at a relatively low temperature （423 K）. Thermooxidative degradations of the same polymers were carried out in a thermogravimetric （TG） analyser, at higher temperatures （453 K 〈 T 〈 523 K）, under isothermal heating conditions. The obtained set of experimental TG data was used to determine the apparent activation energy （Ea） of degradation through two isothermal kinetic methods. The results from long-term experiment evidenced considerable mass loss for both PLA samples in the investigated period, but the experimental data were not in agreement with those from the short-term degradations at higher temperatures, thus suggesting a different degradation kinetics, and, then a low reliability of the lifetime predictions for polymers in service or degradation forecasts for the end of their life based on experiments at higher temperatures.

Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis(IPAA)has become the surgical treatment of choice for many patients with medically refractory ulcerative colitis(UC)and familial adenomatous polyposis(FAP).UC patients with IPAA(UC-IPAA)are,nevertheless,susceptible to inflammatory and noninflammatory sequelae such as pouchitis,which is only rarely noted in FAP patients with *** is the most frequent long-term complication of UC-IPAA patients,with a cumulative prevalence of up to 50%.Although the aetiology of pouchitis remains unclear,accumulating evidence suggests that a dysbiosis of the pouch microbiota and an abnormal mucosal immune response are implicated in its *** using culture and molecular techniques have detected a dysbiosis of the pouch microbiota in patients with *** factors,genetic associations,and serological markers suggest that interactions between the host immune response and the pouch microbiota underlie the aetiology of this idiopathic inflammatory *** systematic review focuses on the dysbiosis of the microbiota that inhabit the pouch in UC and FAP patients and its interaction with the mucosal immune system.A metaanalysis was not attempted due to the highly heterogeneous microbiota composition and the different detection methods used by the various *** no specific bacterial species,genus,or family has as yet been identified as pathogenic,there is evidence that a dysbiosis characterized by decreased gut microbiota diversity in UC-IPAA patients may,in genetically predisposed subjects,lead to aberrant mucosal immune regulation triggering an inflammatory process.

Fracture of bilateral capitulum humeri is a very rare injury. We present a case of a 38-year-old woman, affected by a shear fracture of bilateral capitellum after a motorcycle accident. Intervention was carried out through a lateral approach on both sides and direct fixation of the fragment with headless screws. Consolidation was achieved and no signs of avascular necrosis occurred at 24 months of follow-up. The patient returned to her previous activities with no functional limitations. To the best of our knowledge, only four cases are reported describing different types of treatment and postoperative period of cast immobilization. According to our review of the literature regarding capitellar fractures, we preferred an immediate postoperative rehabilitation of the elbow, following the stable osteosynthesis.

In gastroenterological practice,breath tests(BTs)are diagnostic tools used for indirect,non-invasive assessment of several pathophysiological metabolic processes,by monitoring the appearance in breath of a metabolite of a specific *** substrates originally employed radioactive carbon 14(^(14)C)and,more recently,the stable carbon 13 isotope(^(13)C)has been introduced to label specific *** ingested^(13)C-substrate is metabolized,and exhaled^(13)CO_(2)is measured by mass spectrometry or infrared ***^(13)C-BTs evaluate specific(microsomal,cytosolic,and mitochondrial)hepatic metabolic pathways and can be employed in liver diseases(*** liver steatosis,non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis,liver fibrosis,cirrhosis,hepatocellular carcinoma,drug and alcohol effects).Another field of clinical application for^(13)C-BTs is the assessment of gastric emptying kinetics in response to liquids(^(13)C-acetate)or solids(^(13)C-octanoic acid in egg yolk or in a pre-packed muffin or the^(13)C-Spirulina platensis given with a meal or a biscuit).Studies have shown that^(13)C-BTs,used for gastric emptying studies,yield results that are comparable to scintigraphy and can be useful in detecting either delayed-(gastroparesis)or accelerated gastric emptying or changes of gastric kinetics due to pharmacological ***,^(13)C-BTs represent an indirect,cost-effective and easy method of evaluating dynamic liver function and gastric kinetics in health and disease,and several other potential applications are being studied.

This article discusses a practical, evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and management of liver cirrhosis by focusing on etiology, severity, presence of complications, and potential home-managed treatments. Relevant literature from 1985 to 2010 (PubMed) was reviewed. The search criteria were peer-reviewed full papers published in English using the following MESH headings alone or in combination: "ascites", "liver fibrosis", "cirrhosis", "chronic hepatitis", "chronic liver disease", "decompensated cirrhosis", "hepatic encephalopathy", "hypertransaminasemia", "liver transplantation" and "portal hypertension". Forty-nine papers were selected based on the highest quality of evidence for each section and type (original, randomized controlled trial, guideline, and review article), with respect to specialist setting (Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Internal Medicine) and primary care. Liver cirrhosis from any cause represents an emerging health issue due to the increasing prevalence of the disease and its complications worldwide. Primary care physicians play a key role in early identification of risk factors, in the management of patients for improving quality and length of life, and for preventing complications. Specialists, by contrast, should guide specific treatments, especially in the case of complications and for selecting patient candidates for liver transplantation. An integrated approach between specialists and primary care physicians is essential for providing better outcomes and appropriate home care for patients with liver cirrhosis.

Characterization of artificial spherical particles for DEM validation studies

This paper describes a study in which advanced particle-scale characterization was carried out on spherical particles that can be used in experimental tests to validate discrete element method （DEM） simulations. Two types of particle, alkaline and borosilicate glass beads, made from two different materials, were con- sidered. The particle shape, stiffness, contact friction properties and surface roughness were measured. The influences of hardness and roughness on the mechanical response of the particles were carefully considered. Compared to the alkaline beads, the borosilicate beads were more spherical and more uniform in size, and they exhibited mechanical characteristics closer to natural quartz sand. While only two material types were studied, the work has the broader implication as a methodology for selecting particles suitable for use in DEM studies and the key parameters that should be considered in the selection process are highlighted.

Regions of slow strain often produce swarm-like sequences,characterized by the lack of a clear mainshockaftershock *** comprehension of their underlying physical mechanisms is challenging and still *** used seismic recordings from the last Pollino swarm(2010-2014) and nearby to separate and map seismic scattering(from P peak-delays) and absorption(from late-time coda-wave attenuation) at different frequencies in the Pollino range and ***-scattering and high-absorption anomalies are markers of a fluid-filled fracture volume extending from SE to NW(1.5-6 Hz) across the *** increasing frequency,these anomalies approximately cover the area where the strongest earthquakes occurred from the sixteenth century until *** our interpretation,the NW fracture propagation ends where carbonates of the Lucanian Apennines begin,as marked by a high-scattering and low-absorption *** the highest frequency(12 Hz) the anomalies widen southward in the middle of the range,consistently marking the faults active during the recent Pollino *** results suggest that fracture healing has closed small-scale fractures across the SE faults that were active in the past centuries,and that the propagation of fluids may have played a crucial role in triggering the 2010-2014 Pollino *** that the fluid propagation ended at the carbonates barrier in the NW direction,fractures opened new paths to the South,favoring the nucleation of the last Pollino ***,the recently active faults in the middle of the seismogenic volume are marked by a high-scattering and highabsorption *** work provides evidence that attenuation parameters may track shape and dynamics of fluid-filled fracture networks in fault areas.

Engineered scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration are designed to promote cell adhesion,growth,proliferation and ***,covalent and selective functionalization of glass and titanium surfaces with an adhesive peptide(HVP)mapped on[351e359]sequence of human Vitronectin allowed to selectively increase osteoblast attachment and adhesion strength in in vitro assays,and to promote osseointegration in in vivo *** the first time to our knowledge,in this study we investigated the resistance of adhesion sequences to proteolytic digestion:HVP was completely cleaved after 5 *** order to overcome the enzymatic degradation of the native peptide under physiological conditions we synthetized three analogues of HVP sequence.A retro-inverted peptide D-2HVP,composed of D amino acids,was completely stable in serum-containing *** addition,glass surfaces functionalized with D-2HVP increased human osteoblast adhesion as compared to the native peptide and maintained deposition of ***,D-2HVP increased expression of IBSP,VTN and SPP1 genes as compared to HVP functionalized *** internal reflection fluorescence microscope analysis showed cells with numerous filopodia spread on D-2HVP-functionalized ***,the D-2HVP sequence is proposed as new osteoblast adhesive peptide with increased bioactivity and high proteolytic resistance.
