BACKGROUND Ovarian anomalies except for uni-or bilateral streak gonads are rare.We present a rare case of an ovarian anomaly in which both ovaries were connected by extra tissue.CASE SUMMARY A 32-year-old,primipara with a twin pregnancy at 36 weeks of gestation was admitted to the hospital with severe preeclampsia.She underwent emergency cesarean section owing to persistent headache,blurred vision,and general edema.Following a peritoneal incision,a thin rectangular-shaped tissue was seen in front of the uterus.After delivery,the extra tissue was removed;no other anomalies were reported in either the ovaries or uterus.Pathology results of the removed tissue disclosed a well-vascularized loose stromal tissue with few follicles and scattered luteinized cells.In this case,to prevent pelvic adhesion or intestinal obstruction resulting from volvulus,strangulation,and torsion,the extra tissue was removed.CONCLUSION We report a case of a rare ovarian anomaly where both ovaries were connected by extra tissue.If the extra tissue extends to the abdominal cavity,it should be removed to prevent pelvic adhesion or abdominal complications including intestinal volvulus,strangulation,and torsion.

Monofilament type of polyaromatic amide(PA)and carbon nanotube(CNT)composite fibers is presented.A concept of a lyotropic liquid crystal(LLC)constructed via a spontaneous self-assembly is introduced to mitigate the extremely low com-patibility between PA and CNT.These approaches provide an effective co-processing route of PA and CNT simultaneously to fabricate the uniform,continuous,and reliable composite fibers through a wet-spinning.Interestingly,the addition of a small amount PA into the dope solution of CNT governs the LLC mesophase not only in a spinneret stage but also in a coagulant region.Thus,the developed PA/CNT composite fibers have the high uniaxial orientational order and the close interfacial packing compared to the pure CNT fibers.The PA/CNT composite fibers achieve the outstanding tensile strength,electrical conductivity,and electrochemical response,while maintaining a lightweight.They also exhibit the chemical,mechanical,and thermal robustness.All of these advantages can make flexible,sewable,and washable PA/CNT composite fibers ideal nanocomposite materials for use in next-generation information and energy transporting system by replacing conventional metal electrical conductors.

Background:Graves'ophthalmopathy(GO)occurs commonly in children with Graves'disease(GD).However,there are limited studies on the clinical manifestations and thyroid autoantibodies in pediatric GO.The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of GO in childhood GD.Methods:Clinical and biochemical data from children and adolescents with GD were retrospectively reviewed.Eighty patients under 19 years of age were included in the present study.We compared the clinical and biochemical differences between patients with and without GO.Results:Thirty-nine percent of the patients had GO,and 81%of the GO patients were females.Of these,two patients showed unilateral GO.Triiodothyronine(T3)levels were higher in GO patients than in those without GO.Anti-thyroglobulin antibody and thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibody titers were not significantly different between the two groups.Anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody(TPO Ab)positivity was 68%in the patients with GO and only 47%in the patients without GO.In multivariate regression analysis,high T3 levels and TPO Ab positivity were related to the presence of GO.Conclusion:In children and adolescents with GD,TPO Ab positivity and high T3 levels could act as predictive factors for the presence of GO.

OBJECTIVE:Chemotherapeutic agents such as docetaxel(DTX)can trigger chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy(CIPN),which is characterized by unbearable pain.This study was designed to investigate the analgesic effect and related neuronal mechanism of low-frequency median nerve stimulation(LFMNS)on DTX-induced tactile hypersensitivity in mice.METHODS:To produce CIPN,DTX was administered intraperitoneally 4 times,once every 2 d,to male ICR mice.LFMNS was performed on the wrist area,and the pain response was measured using von Frey filaments on both hind paws.Western blot and immunofluorescence staining were performed using dorsal root ganglion and spinal cord samples to measure the expression of brainderived neurotrophic factor(BDNF).RESULTS:Repeated LFMNS significantly attenuated the DTX-induced abnormal sensory response and suppressed the enhanced expression of BDNF in the DRG neurons and spinal dorsal area.CONCLUSIONS:LFMNS might be an effective nonpharmaceutical option for treating patients suffering from CIPN via regulating the expression of peripheral and central BDNF.

Very late stent thrombosis （VLST） is increasingly being regarded as a complication of drug-eluting stents （DES）, and delayed endothelization, local hypersensitivity reactions, and late stent malapposition due to excessive positive remodeling have been postulated as mechanisms. Considering that stent endothelialization seems to be completed within 4 weeks following bare-metal stent （BMS） placement and that BMS do not possess antiproliferative coating, the mechanism of VLST may differ between patients with DES and those with BMS. We report a case of VLST 9 years after BMS implantation, in which thrombus from the ruptured neointima was confirmed by intravascular ultrasound. This finding suggests that de novo plaque rupture at the neointimal layer within the stent may be one of the explanations for VLST.

Prostate cancer(PCa)is the most commonly diagnosed genital cancer in men worldwide.Around 80%of the patients who developed advanced PCa suffered from bone metastasis,with a sharp drop in the survival rate.Despite great efforts,the detailed mechanisms underlying castration-resistant PCa(CRPC)remain unclear.Sirtuin 5(SIRT5),an NAD+-dependent desuccinylase,is hypothesized to be a key regulator of various cancers.However,compared to other SIRTs,the role of SIRT5 in cancer has not been extensively studied.Here,we revealed significantly decreased SIRT5 levels in aggressive PCa cells relative to the PCa stages.The correlation between the decrease in the SIRT5 level and the patient’s reduced survival rate was also confirmed.Using quantitative global succinylome analysis,we characterized a significant increase in the succinylation at lysine 118(K118su)of lactate dehydrogenase A(LDHA),which plays a role in increasing LDH activity.As a substrate of SIRT5,LDHA-K118su significantly increased the migration and invasion of PCa cells and LDH activity in PCa patients.This study reveals the reduction of SIRT5 protein expression and LDHA-K118su as a novel mechanism involved in PCa progression,which could serve as a new target to prevent CPRC progression for PCa treatment.

How to improve patient satisfaction during midazolam sedation for gastrointestinal endoscopy?

AIM To determine the procedure-related factors that affect sedation satisfaction and to make a suggestion to improve it.METHODS We prospectively enrolled a total of 456 patients who underwent outpatient endoscopy procedures with midazolam sedation between March 2014 and August 2014. All patients completed both pre- and postendoscopy questionnaires about sedation expectations and satisfaction. RESULTS The study cohort included 167 (36.6%) patients whounderwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), 167 (36.6%) who underwent colonoscopy, and 122(26.8%) who underwent a combined procedure (EGD and colonoscopy). Over 80% of all patients were satisfied with sedation using midazolam. In univariate and multivariate analyses, total procedure time in the EGD group, younger age (≤ 50 years), and longer colonoscopy withdrawal time in the colonoscopy group were related to decreased satisfaction with sedation. However, in active monitoring and intervention group, there was no decrease in grade of satisfaction despite longer procedure time due to more procedures during colonoscopy. Younger age (≤ 50 years), longer interprocedure time gap, and colonoscopy withdrawal time were related to decreased satisfaction in the combined EGD and colonoscopy group. CONCLUSION Midazolam is still a safe and effective sedative for gastrointestinal endoscopy. Satisfaction with sedation depends on several factors including age(≤ 50 years) and procedure time duration. To improve patient satisfaction with sedation, active monitoring of sedation status by the endoscopist should be considered for patients who require long procedure time.

Radial growth response of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spp.to topographic and climatic factors in South Korea

Aims This study aimed to develop radial growth models and to predict the potential spatial distribution of Pinus densiflora(Japanese red pine)and Quercus spp.(Oaks)in South Korea,considering topographic and climatic factors.Methods We used a dataset of diameter at breast height and radial growth estimates of individual trees,topographic and climatic factors in systematic sample plots distributed over the whole of South Korea.On the basis that radial growth is attributed primarily to tree age,we developed a radial growth model employing tree age as an explanatory variable.We estimated standard growth(SG),defined as radial growth of the tree at age 30,to eliminate the influence of tree age on radial growth.In addition,SG estimates including the Topographic Wetness Index,temperature and precipitation were calculated by the Generalized Additive Model.Important Findings As a result of variogram analysis of SG,we found spatial autocorrelation between SG,topographic and climatic factors.Incremental temperature had negative impacts on radial growth of P.densiflora and positive impacts on that of Quercus spp.Precipitation was associated with positive effects on both tree species.Based on the model,we found that radial growth of P.densiflora would be more vulnerable than that of Quercus spp.to climatic factors.Through simulation with the radial growth model,it was predicted that P.densiflora stands would be gradually replaced with Quercus spp.stands in eastern coastal and southern regions of South Korea in the future.The models developed in this study will be helpful for understanding the impact of climatic factors on tree growth and for predicting changes in distribution of P.densiflora and Quercus spp.due to climate change in South Korea.
