Activation mechanisms on potassium hydroxide enhanced microstructures development of coke powder

Coke powder is expected to be an excellent raw material to produce activated carbon because of its high carbon content. Potassium hydroxide(KOH), as an effective activation agent, was reported to be effective in activating coke powder. However, the microstructures development in the coke powder and its mechanisms when KOH was applied were still unclear. In this study, effects of KOH on the microstructure activation of coke powder were investigated using the surface area and pore structure analyzer, scanning electron microscope(SEM) and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry-mass spectrometry(TG-DSC-MS), etc. Results revealed that the addition KOH at its lower ratio(mass ratios of KOH and coke powder in a range of 0.5 and 1) decreased the specific surface area and average lateral sizes, but sharply increased of the specific surface area to 132 m^2·g^-1 and 355 m^2·g^-1 and decreased of the space size of aromatic crystallites upon the further increase of the KOH addition amounts(ratios of KOH and coke powder in a range of 3 and 7), generating a number of new micropores and mesopores. The mechanisms study implied surface reactions between KOH and aliphatic hydrocarbon side chain and other carbon functional groups of the coke powder to destruct aromatic crystallites in one dimension and broaden pores at lower KOH addition. In the activation process, KOH was decomposed to be more active components, which can be rapidly destruct the aromatic layers in spatial scope to form developed porous carbon structures within coke powder at higher KOH addition.

CuSO4/TiO2 catalysts with high catalytic activity and excellent resistant to SO2 and H2 O,were thought to be promising catalysts used in Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by NH3.The performance of catalysts is largely affected by calcination temperature.Here,effects of calcination temperature on physicochemical property and catalytic activity of CuSO4/TiO2 catalysts were investigated in depth.Catalyst samples calcined at different temperatures were prepared first and then physicochemical properties of the catalyst were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption,X-ray diffraction,thermogravimetric analysis,Raman spectra,Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,temperature-pro grammed desorption of NH3,temperature-programmed reduction of H2 and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy.Results revealed that high calcination temperature had three main effects on the catalyst.First,sintering and anatase transform into rutile with increase of calcination temperature,causing a decrement of specific surface area.Second,decomposition of CuSO4 under higher calcination temperature,resulting in disappears of Br(?)nsted acid sites(S-OH),which had an adverse effect on surface acidity.Third,CuO from the decomposition of CuSO4 changed surface reducibility of the catalyst and favored the process of NH3 oxidation to nitrogen oxides(NOx).Thus,catalytic activity of the catalyst calcined under high temperatures(≥600℃)decreased largely.

Potential shift of bacterial community structure and corrosion-related bacteria in drinking water distribution pipeline driven by water source switching

As a result of pollution in the present water sources,cities have been forced to utilize cleaner water sources.There are few reports regarding the potential shift of bacterial community structure driven by water source switching,especially that of corrosion-related bacteria.Three types of finished water were used for simulation,the polluted source water from the Qiantang and Dongtiaoxi Rivers(China)was replaced by cleaner water from Qiandao Lake(China).Here,we discussed the transition effects through three simulated reactors.The bacterial characteristics were identified using the highthroughput sequencing and heterotrophic plate count method.It was observed that the level of culturable bacteria declined by 2–3 orders of magnitude after water source switching.The bacterial community released from the pipeline reactor was significantly different under different finished water,and it exhibited large variation at the genus level.Porphyrobacter(58.2%)and Phreatobacter(14.5%)clearly replaced Novosphingobium,Aquabacterium,and Cupriavidus as new dominant genera in system A,which could be attributed to the lower carbon and nitrogen content of the new water source.Although corrosion-inhibiting bacteria decreased after switching,they still maintained dominant in three reactors(6.6%,15.9%,and 19.7%).Furthermore,potential opportunistic pathogens such as Sphingomonas were detected.Our study shows that after transition to a high quality water source,the total culturable bacteria released was in a downtrend,which leads to a great reduction in the risk of bacterial leakage in the produced drinking water.

OBJECTIVE:To observe the effects of Bushenwenyanghuayu decoction(BD),a Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),on the serum concentration of nerve growth factor(NGF) and bradykinin(BK),and protein and mRNA levels of NGF and bradykinin B_1receptor(BKB1R) in a mouse model of endometriosis dysmenorrhea.METHODS:Seventy-five experimental female BALB/c mice were randomly divided into five groups,15 mice each:sham,model,BD high dose(61.67 g/kg),BD low dose(15.42 g/kg),and gestrinone(0.4 mg/kg) groups.All the mice except for those in the sham group underwent auto-transplantation surgery and were gavaged estradiol valerate(0.5 mg/kg,daily for 12 days) after surgery.On the 12 th day,1 h after administration,writhing response was induced by intraperitoneal injection of oxytocin at 2 U/mouse.The writhing frequency and latency were recorded and the volume of the ectopic foci was measured.The concentration of serum NGF and BK was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay,the protein expression of NGF and BKB1 R was tested by immunohistochemistry and western blotting,and NGF and BKB1 R mRNAs were detected by real-time PCR.RESULTS:Compared with the model group,the volume of the ectopic foci in the treatment groups was significantly lower(P < 0.01),the writhing frequency was decreased(P < 0.05),and the writhing latency was prolonged(P < 0.01).Compared with the sham group,serum NGF and BK levels in the model group were significantly increased(P <0.01).There were positive correlations for writhing frequency among the NGF and BK groups(P <0.01).The serum NGF and BK levels were significantly lower in the treatment groups than the model group(P < 0.05).The protein expression of NGF,BKB1 R was significantly decreased in the treatment groups compared with the model group(P < 0.01).NGF and BKB1 R mRNA expression was significantly decreased in the treatment groups compared with the model group(P < 0.01).CONCLUSION:NGF and BK/BKB1 R may play an important role in the development of endometriosis-associated dysmenorrhea,and BD was found to inh

The role of transporters in cancer redox homeostasis and cross-talk with nanomedicines

Tumor cell usually exhibits high levels of reactive oxygen species and adaptive antioxidant system due to the metabolic,genetic,and microenvironment-associated alterations.The altered redox homeostasis can promote tumor progression,development,and treatment resistance.Several membrane transporters are involved in the resetting redox homeostasis and play important roles in tumor progression.Therefore,targeting the involved transporters to disrupt the altered redox balance emerges as a viable strategy for cancer therapy.In addition,nanomedicines have drawn much attention in the past decades.Using nanomedicines to target or reset the redox homeostasis alone or combined with other therapies has brought convincing data in cancer treatment.In this review,we will introduce the altered redox balance in cancer metabolism and involved transporters,and highlight the recent advancements of redox-modulating nanomedicines for cancer treatment.
