Going below and beyond the surface: Microneedle structure, materials, drugs, fabrication, and applications for wound healing and tissue regeneration

Microneedle, as a novel drug delivery system, has attracted widespread attention due to its non-invasiveness, painless and simple administration, controllable drug delivery, and diverse cargo loading capacity. Although microneedles are initially designed to penetrate stratum corneum of skin for transdermal drug delivery, they, recently, have been used to promote wound healing and regeneration of diverse tissues and organs and the results are promising. Despite there are reviews about microneedles, few of them focus on wound healing and tissue regeneration. Here, we review the recent advances of microneedles in this field. We first give an overview of microneedle system in terms of its potential cargos (e.g., small molecules, macromolecules, nucleic acids, nanoparticles, extracellular vesicle, cells), structural designs (e.g., multidrug structures, adhesive structures), material selection, and drug release mechanisms. Then we briefly summarize different microneedle fabrication methods, including their advantages and limitations. We finally summarize the recent progress of microneedle-assisted wound healing and tissue regeneration (e.g., skin, cardiac, bone, tendon, ocular, vascular, oral, hair, spinal cord, and uterine tissues). We expect that our article would serve as a guideline for readers to design their microneedle systems according to different applications, including material selection, drug selection, and structure design, for achieving better healing and regeneration efficacy.

Background and Objective:hong Kong,like many parts of Asia,faces a high burden of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)caused by high endemic rates of hepatitis B virus *** Kong clinicians have developed a high level of expertise in HCC treatment across surgical,transarterial,ablative,radiotherapeutic and systemic *** publication summarizes the latest evidence-based recommendations on how these modalities should be ***:In two meetings held in 2020,a multidisciplinary panel of surgeons,oncologists and interventional radiologists performed a narrative review of evidence on the management of HCC,with an emphasis on treatment of HCC not amenable to surgical *** attention was paid to new evidence published since the previous version of these statements in *** Content and Findings:The expert panel has formulated 60 consensus statements to guide the staging and treatment of unresectable *** the previous version of these statements,considerable additions have been made to the recommendations on use of targeted therapies and immunotherapies because of the large volume of new ***:Our consensus statements offer guidance on how to select HCC patients for surgical or non-surgical treatment and for choosing among non-surgical modalities for patients who are not candidates for *** particular,there is a need for more evidence to aid physicians in the selection of second-line systemic therapies,as currently most data are limited to patients with disease progression on first-line sorafenib.

Microbiologically Induced Corrosion of Concrete and Protective Coatings in Gravity Sewers

Microbiologically induced corrosion of concrete （MICC） and its protective coatings has a high eco-nomic impact on sewer maintenance and rehabilitation. A better understanding of the micro-organisms and the bio- genie acids that are generated in the sewer is essential in controlling the corrosion of concrete pipes and protective coatings. The role of succession of micro-organisms growth in the corrosion of concrete and protective coatings was evaluated in this study. Examination of various sewer pipe materials exhibiting various extents of degradation, including concrete, cement based and epoxy based coating revealed the presence of both organic and biogenic sulphuric acids. This reflects the activity of fungi and the thiobacilli strains. Organism growth and metabolism were strongly related to the substrate pH. Fungi were found to grow and metabolise organic acids at pH from 2.0-8.0. Whilst the thiobacilli strains grew and generated sulohuric acids at oH below 3.0. The successive growth of the organisms provides an impgrtant bearing in deyeloping improved *** better manage sewers.

Dear Editor,Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19)is associated with a variety of neurological complications,including encephalopathy,encephalitis,dementia,and others.1 The pathogenic mechanism of these neurological manifestations remains incompletely understood but may be due to factors such as coagulation problem,immune-mediated response,or direct viral invasion into the central nervous system(CNS).2 We and others previously reported that ancestral SARS-CoV-2 could infect and replicate in human brain organoids.3,4 More recently,SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.1 emerged in late 2021 and demonstrated altered virological features including increased immunoevasion and attenuated pathogenicity comparing to SARS-CoV-2 wildtype(WT)and previous variants.5 however,the neuroinvasiveness of Omicron sublineages remain ***,we investigated the neuroinvasion and neurotoxicity of Omicron BA.1 and BA.2,and compared the findings with those of SARS-CoV-2 WT and Delta in human forebrain and midbrain *** results demonstrated that BA.2 replicated more efficiently while triggered lower levels of type I interferon response than that of SARS-CoV-2 WT,Delta,and BA.1 in both human forebrain and midbrain *** addition,BA.2 triggered substantially higher levels of apoptosis in the infected human forebrain and midbrain ***,these findings suggest that BA.2 may be different from SARS-CoV-2 WT and previous variants in its capacity in targeting and causing diseases in the human brain.

Choledochal cysts are congenital anomalies of the biliary ducts, characterized by cystic dilatation of the *** diagnosis of this anomaly using ultrasonography (US) has been well documented. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has recently become an important complement to US in prenatal diagnosis of fetal anomalies. We herein report a patient in whom at 24 wk' gestation US suggested a right upper quadrant abdominal cyst and in whom at 26 wk' gestation MRI more clearly delineated the cyst and its surrounding structures and suggested a choledochal cyst, which was confirmed at postnatal surgery and histopathology.

Model Checking for a General Linear Model with Nonignorable Missing Covariates

In this paper, we investigate the model checking problem for a general linear model with nonignorable missing covariates. We show that, without any parametric model assumption for the response probability, the least squares method yields consistent estimators for the linear model even if only the complete data are applied. This makes it feasible to propose two testing procedures for the corresponding model checking problem： a score type lack-of-fit test and a test based on the empirical process. The asymptotic properties of the test statistics are investigated. Both tests are shown to have asymptotic power 1 for local alternatives converging to the null at the rate n-r, 0 ≤ r 〈 1/2. Simulation results show that both tests perform satisfactorily.

This article recounts China’s renminbi(RMB)internationalisation experiences since the 2009 RMB cross-border trade settlement *** the first few years,the RMB made inroads into global financial markets and had a few remarkable accomplishments,including the Special Drawing Right currency *** the 2015 market turmoil,RMB internationalisation has levelled off–possibly due to changes in both domestic and geopolitical *** RMB is currently under-represented in the global ***’s deliberate and schematic policies will elevate the RMB’s global stature in a gradual manner but there will not be a leapfrogging in the near term.

智慧电表基础设施（Advanced Metering Infrastructure,AMI）通过电力数据采集、分析和管理,可以优化电力供求平衡.由于AMI的建设需要巨额投资,如何评估AMI建成后节省的电量和减少的碳排放量是目前面临的一个挑战.本研究以香港为例,通过现场测量和分析不同地区不同环境条件下AMI的效能,同时基于研究区块类型、AMI的覆盖率、发电燃料组合结构、参与AMI的人口比例和相关价格激励机制等因素,建立了一套数学模式,量化评估AMI建成后节能减排的成效.结果显示,只要超过70%的人口参与,就可以实现香港政府原先制定的减少碳排放量19%~33%的目标.

The statistical downscaling models which are used as a bridging model to connect the global climate model output and the local weather variables have uncertainty associated with *** uncertainty present in the model as well as in the results should be quantified for reliable climate change impact *** sources of uncertainty include natural variability, uncertainty in the climate model(s), downscaling model, model inadequacy and in the predicted *** analysis and quantification in the models is a promising approach for climate change impact *** this paper, a new approach called BUASCSDSEC(Bayesian uncertainty analysis for stochastic classification and statistical downscaling with stochastic dependent error coupling) is *** is a robust Bayesian uncertainty analysis methodology and tools for combined classification(to predict the occurrence of rainfall) and statistical *** is based on coupling dependent modelling error which is viewed as a function modelled as a stochastic process with classification and statistical downscaling models in a way that the dependency among modelling errors will impact the result of the classification and statistical downscaling model calibration and uncertainty analysis for future *** Process is considered in the error *** data are used and the uncertainty and prediction results are obtained for the validation period(1995-2000).It is observed that the CDFs of the daily predicted samples are consistent with the observed CDF of *** uncertainty is smaller for the extreme rainfall and the uncertainty for smaller amount of rainfall is more compared to that for the extreme *** the results obtained, ongoing research for improvement is briefly presented.

Complications aroused from Meckel’s diverticulum tend to developed in children. Children presented with abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, intussusception or gastrointestinal bleeding may actually suffered from complicated Meckel’s diverticulum. With the advancement of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in children, the use of laparoscopy in the diagnosis and subsequent laparoscopic excision of Meckel’s diverticulum has gained popularity. Recently, single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) has emerged as a new technique in minimally invasive surgery. This review offers the overview in the development of MIS in the management of children suffered from Meckel’s diverticulum. The current evidence in different laparoscopic techniques, including conventional laparoscopy, SILS, the use of special laparoscopic instruments, intracorporeal diverticulectomy and extracorporeal diverticulectomy in the management of Meckel’s diverticulum in children were revealed.
