Osteopontin as potential biomarker and therapeutic target in gastric and liver cancers

Gastric cancer and liver cancer are among the most common malignancies and the leading causes of death worldwide,due to late detection and high recurrence ***,these cancers have a heavy socioeconomic burden,for which a full understanding of their pathophysiological features is warranted to search for promising biomarkers and therapeutic *** (OPN) is overexpressed in most patients with gastric and liver *** the past decade,emerging evidence has revealed a correlation of OPN level and clinicopathological features and prognosis in gastric and liver cancers,indicating its potential as an independent prognostic indicator in such *** studies have verified the potential of OPN knockdown as a therapeutic approach in vitro and in vivo .Furthermore,OPN mediates multifaceted roles in the interaction between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment,in which many details need further *** signaling results in various functions,including prevention of apoptosis,modulation of angiogenesis,malfunction of tumor-associated macrophages,degradation of extracellular matrix,activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase-Akt and nuclear factor-κB pathways,which lead to tumor formation and progression,particularly in gastric and liver *** editorial aims to review recent findings on alteration in OPN expression and its clinicopathological associations with tumor progression,its potential as a therapeutic target,and putative mechanisms in gastric and liver *** understanding of the implications of OPN in tumorigenesis might facilitate development of therapeutic regimens to benefit patients with these deadly malignancies.

Experimental investigation on combustion and unregulated emission characteristics of butanol-isomer/gasoline blends

Effects of butanol isomers on characteristics of combustion and emission were studied on PFI SI engine. Experiments were operated under the condition of 3 and 5 bar brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) engine loads and different equivalence ratios (φ=0.83-1.25) with engine speed of 1200 r/min using blends made of 70 vol.% gasoline and 30 vol.% butanol isomers (N30, S30, I30 and T30). The results indicated that compared with gasoline, all butanol isomer blends have higher cylinder pressure. N30 has the highest and most advanced peak pressure, and T30 shows a higher brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and lower brake thermal efficiency (BTE). N30 presents a lower UHC emissions and I30 has slightly higher CO emissions than other blends. For unregulated emissions, compared with gasoline, butanol isomer blends have higher acetaldehyde, and N30 produces a higher emission of 1,3-butadiene than other blends. A reduction in benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) has been found with butanol isomer blends.

Molecular beam epitaxy of superconducting PdTe_2 films on topological insulator Bi_2Te_3

Majorana fermions have been observed in topological insulator/s-wave superconductor heterostructures. To manipulate Majorana fermions, superconducting materials should be deposited on the surfaces of topological insulators. In this study, highquality superconducting PdTe_2 films are deposited on the topological insulator Bi_2Te_3 surface using molecular beam epitaxy. The surface topography and electronic properties of PdTe_2/Bi_2Te_3 heterostructures are investigated via in situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Under Te-rich conditions, the Pd atoms presumably form PdTe_2 film on Bi_2Te_3 surface rather than diffuse into Bi_2Te_3. The superconductivity of the PdTe_2/Bi_2Te_3 heterostructure is detected at a transition temperature of ～1.4 K using the two-coil mutual inductance technique. This study proposes a method for fabricating superconducting materials on topological insulator surfaces at low doping levels, paving ways for designing nanodevices that can manipulate Majorana fermions.

Deciphering mycorrhizal fungi in cultivated Phalaenopsis microbiome with next-generation sequencing of multiple barcodes

Identifying the species composition of a microbial ecosystem is often hampered by difficulties in culturing the organisms and in the low sequencing depth of traditional DNA *** analysis,a huge-scale nucleotide-sequence-based tool,can overcome such *** this study,Sanger sequencing of 500 nrITS clones uncovered 29 taxa of 19 fungal genera,whereas metagenomics with next-generation sequencing identified 512 operational taxonomic units(OTUs)for ITS1/2 and 364 for ITS3/***,high throughput sequencing of PCR amplicons of ITS1/2,ITS3/4,nrLSU-LR,nrLSU-U,mtLSU,and mtATP6,all with at least 1,300×coverage and about 21 million reads in total,yielded a very diverse fungal *** fact that 74%of the OTUs were exclusively uncovered with single barcodes indicated that each marker provided its own insights into the fungal *** deal with the high heterogeneity in the data and to integrate the information on species composition across barcodes,a rank-scoring strategy was ***,205 genera among 64 orders of fungi were identified in healthy Phalaenopsis *** the barcodes utilized,ITS1/2,ITS3/4,and nrLSU-U were the most competent in uncovering the fungal *** barcodes,though detecting different compositions likely due to primer preference,provided complementary and comprehensive power in deciphering the microbial diversity,especially in revealing rare species.

Pseudocapacitive transition metal oxides(PTMOs)have the advantages of high areal capacitance and material density suitable for high-energy supercapacitor devices,but they are typically marred by insufficient rate performance,which in turn deteriorates cyclic stability at high current *** the example of spinel manganese oxide,herein we demonstrate that a pseudocapacitive oxide electrode of remarkable rate performance and cyclic stability may be realized by adopting oxide nanocrystallites,which are derived based on a novel solution chemistry,and carbon additive(CA)nanoparticles with highly uniform of size *** controlling the particle morphology and size distribution of the active material and conductive additive(CA)in the nanometer range can maximize the density of active material-CA-electrolyte three-phase contact points,thus facilitating synchronized electron and cation flow for the completion of surface faradaic *** resultant Mn3O4 pseudocapacitive electrode exhibits rate capability and cycle stability,including 60%capacity retention at 60 A g-1 and no capacity fade over 100000 cycles under dynamic current densities,far superior to the state-of-the-art PTMO *** electrode design strategy is in general applicable to pseudocapacitors containing poorly conductive active materials.

Femtosecond mode-locked laser frequency combs have served as the cornerstone in precision spectroscopy,alloptical atomic clocks,and measurements of ultrafast *** frequency microcombs based on nonlinear microresonators have been examined,exhibiting remarkable precision approaching that of laser frequency combs,on a solid-state chip-scale platform and from a fundamentally different physical *** recent successes,to date,the real-time dynamical origins and high-power stabilities of such frequency microcombs have not been fully ***,we unravel the transitional dynamics of frequency microcombs from chaotic background routes to femtosecond mode-locking in real time,enabled by our ultrafast temporal magnifier metrology and improved stability of dispersion-managed dissipative *** our dispersion-managed oscillator,we further report a stability zone that is more than an order-of-magnitude larger than its prior static homogeneous counterparts,providing a novel platform for understanding ultrafast dissipative dynamics and offering a new path towards high-power frequency microcombs.

AIM: To compare the gene expression profile in a pair of HBV-infected ***: The gene expression profile was compared in a pair of HBV-infected ***: The twins displayed different disease outcomes. One acquired natural immunity against HBV,whereas the other became a chronic HBV carrier. Eightyeight and forty-six genes were found to be up- or downregulated in their PBMCs, respectively. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha-induced protein 1 (TNF-αIP1) that expressed at a higher level in the HBV-immune twins was identified and four pairs of siblings with HBV immunity by RTPCR. However, upon HBV core antigen stimulation,TNF-αIP1 was downregulated in PBMCs from subjects with immunity, whereas it was slightly upregulated in HBV carriers. Bioinformatics analysis revealed a K+channel tetramerization domain in TNF-αIP1 that shares a significant homology with some human, mouse, and C elegan ***: TNF-αIP1 may play a role in the innate immunity against HBV.

Full-color displays based on micro light-emitting diodes(μLEDs) can be fabricated on monolithic epitaxial wafers. Nanoring(NR) structures were fabricated on a green LED epitaxial wafer; the color of NR-μLEDs was tuned from green to blue through strain relaxation. An Al_2O_3 layer was deposited on the sidewall of NR-μLEDs,which improved the photoluminescence intensity by 143.7%. Coupling with the exposed multiple quantum wells through nonradiative resonant energy transfer, red quantum dots were printed to NR-μLEDs for a full-color display. To further improve the color purity of the red light, a distributed Bragg reflector is developed to reuse the excitation light.
