Seasonal variation and host sex affect bat–bat fly interaction networks in the Amazonian savannahs

Bats are the second-most diverse group of mammals in the world,and bat flies are their main ***,significant knowledge gaps remain regarding these antagonistic interactions,especially since diverse factors such as seasonality and host sex can affect their network ***,we explore the influence of such factors by comparing species richness and composition of bat flies on host bats,as well as specialization and modularity of bat–bat fly interaction networks between seasons and adult host *** captured bats and collected their ectoparasitic flies at 10 sampling sites in the savannahs of AmapáState,northeastern region of the Brazilian *** female bats being more parasitized and recording greater bat fly species richness in the wet season,neither relationship was statistically *** pooled network could be divided into 15 compartments with 54 links,and all subnetworks comprised>12 *** total number of links ranged from 27 to 48(for the dry and wet seasons,respectively),and female and male subnetworks had 44 and 41 links,*** values were very low for the pooled network and for all *** results revealed higher bat fly species richness and abundance in the wet season,whereas specialization and modularity were higher in the dry ***,the subnetwork for female bats displayed higher specialization and modularity than the male ***,both seasonality and host sex contribute in different ways to bat–bat fly network *** studies should consider these factors when evaluating bat–bat fly interaction networks.

Development of photoreactive demineralized bone matrix 3D printing colloidal inks for bone tissue engineering

Demineralized bone matrix(DBM)has been widely used clinically for dental,craniofacial and skeletal bone repair,as an osteoinductive and osteoconductive material.3D printing(3DP)enables the creation of bone tissue engineering scaffolds with complex geometries and *** methacryloylated gelatin nanoparticles(GNP-MAs)3DP inks have been developed,which display gel-like behavior for high print fidelity and are capable of post-printing photocrosslinking for control of scaffold swelling and ***,novel DBM nanoparticles(DBM-NPs,∼400 nm)were fabricated and characterized prior to incorporation in 3DP *** objectives of this study were to determine how these DBM-NPs would influence the printability of composite colloidal 3DP inks,assess the impact of ultraviolet(UV)crosslinking on 3DP scaffold swelling and degradation and evaluate the osteogenic potential of DBM-NP-containing composite colloidal *** addition of methacryloylated DBM-NPs(DBM-NP-MAs)to composite colloidal inks(100:0,95:5 and 75:25 GNP-MA:DBM-NP-MA)did not significantly impact the rheological properties associated with printability,such as viscosity and shear recovery or *** crosslinking with a UV dosage of 3 j/cm2 directly impacted the rate of 3DP scaffold swelling for all GNP-MA:DBM-NP-MA ratios with an∼40%greater increase in scaffold area and pore area in uncrosslinked versus photocrosslinked scaffolds over 21 days in phosphate-buffered saline(PBS).Likewise,degradation(hydrolytic and enzymatic)over 21 days for all DBM-NP-MA content groups was significantly decreased,∼45%less in PBS and collagenase-containing PBS,in UV-crosslinked versus uncrosslinked *** incorporation of DBM-NP-MAs into scaffolds decreased mass loss compared to GNP-MA-only scaffolds during collagenase *** in vitro osteogenic study with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells demonstrated osteoconductive properties of 3DP scaffolds for the DBM-NP-MA contents examine

Role of inflammatory response in liver diseases: Therapeutic strategies

Inflammation and tumorigenesis are tightly linked pathways impacting cancer development. Inflammasomes are key signalling platforms that detect pathogenic microorganisms, including hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection, and sterile stressors(oxidative stress, insulin resistance, lipotoxicity) able to activate pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β and IL-18. Most of the inflammasome complexes that have been described to date contain a NOD-like receptor sensor molecule. Redox state and autophagy can regulate inflammasome complex and, depending on the conditions, can be either pro-or antiapoptotic. Acute and chronic liver diseases are cytokinedriven diseases as several proinflammatory cytokines(IL-1α, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and IL-6) are critically involved in inflammation, steatosis, fibrosis, and cancer development. NLRP3 inflammasome gain of function aggravates liver disease, resulting in severe liver fibrosis and highlighting this pathway in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. On the other hand, HCV infection is the primary catalyst for progressive liver disease and development of liver cancer. It is well established that HCV-induced IL-1β production by hepatic macrophages plays a critical and central process that promotes liver inflammation and disease. In this review, we aim to clarify the role of the inflammasome in the aggravation of liver disease, and how selective blockade of this main pathway may be a useful strategy to delay fibrosis progression in liver diseases.

Metabolic complications in liver transplant recipients

The metabolic syndrome(MS), which includes obesity,dyslipidaemia, hypertension and hyperglycaemia according to the most widely accepted definitions now used, is one of the most common post-transplant complications, with a prevalence of 44%-58%. The MS, together with the immunosuppression, is considered the main risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease(CVD) in transplant recipients, which in turn accounts for 19%-42% of all deaths unrelated to the graft. The presence of MS represents a relative risk for the development of CVD and death of 1.78. On the other hand, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD), considered as the manifestation of the MS in the liver, is now the second leading reason for liver transplantation in the United States after hepatitis C and alcohol. NAFLD has a high rate of recurrence in the liver graft and a direct relation with the worsening of other metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance or diabetes mellitus. Consequently, it is vitally important to identify and treat as soon as possible such modifiable factors as hypertension, overweight, hyperlipidaemia or diabetes in transplanted patients to thus minimise the impact on patient survival. Additionally, steroid-free regimens are favoured, with minimal immunosuppression to limit the possible effects on the development of the MS.

Sequential treatment in disseminated well-and intermediate-differentiated pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors:Common sense or low rationale?

Fortunately,the landscape of the systemic treatment for grade 1 and 2 pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors has changed in the last decade with at least four different alternatives approved in the ***,somatostatin analogues,sunitinib and everolimus remind valid options according to the most referenced international ***,and although this is something done in the routine practice,there is a lack of evidence for the use of any of these strategies after failure to the ***,further sequential alternatives in third or fourth line have never been tested *** need for a better understanding of the rationale to sequence different systemic options is even greater in non-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors since available therapies are *** strategies in other solid tumors have led to a clear improvement in overall *** is also believed to occur in neuroendocrine tumors but no clear data on it has been delivered *** postulate that the different mode of action of the systemic options available for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors may avoid the complete resistance of one option after the other and that sequential use of these agents will be translated into a longer overall survival of *** and randomized trials that seek for the activity of drugs after failure to another systemic alternatives are highly needed in this field of neuroendocrine tumors.

Orthobiologics: An Updated Definition

Orthobiologics is a subset of regenerative medicine, which focuses on treating the musculoskeletal system. The main therapeutics utilized include platelet-rich plasma, stem cells, exosomes, and scaffolding matrices. Continuous discoveries and new innovations have led to an increase in both popularity and usage of these therapeutics by various medical and scientific communities. Despite its potential, however, the field is viewed with significant skepticism secondary to poor documentation, a lack of standardization, vague nomenclature, disorganized research protocols, and an absence of a clear understanding of the mechanisms underlying the effects of the various therapeutics. This ambiguity led to a surge in direct-to-consumer marketing by “Stem Cell Clinics”, putting patient’s health at risk and further delegitimizing the field. These shortcomings led to a recent push for standardization by both professionals and organizations alike;a move that has put Orthobiologics on the path toward becoming a guideline-driven, protocol-based, and research-backed specialty. And with these rapid changes comes the need for an updated definition of “Orthobiologics”, a crucial element of any legitimate and standardized medical field.

Phylogenomic datasets continue to enhance our understanding of evolutionary relationships in many lineages of ***,genome-scale data have not been widely implemented in reconstructing relationships in lichenized *** we generate a data set comprised of 2556 single-copy protein-coding genes to reconstruct previously unresolved rela-tionships in the most diverse family of lichen-forming fungi,*** sampling included 51 taxa,mainly from the subfamily Parmelioideae,and represented six of the seven previously identified major clades within the *** results provided strong support for the monophyly of each of these major clades and most backbone relationships in the topology were recovered with high nodal support based on concatenated dataset and species tree *** alectorioid clade was strongly supported as sister-group to all remaining clades,which were divided into two major *** the first major clade the anzioid and usneoid clades formed a strongly supported sister-group relationship with the cetrarioid?hypogymnioid *** sister-group relationship of Evernia with the cetrarioid clade was also strongly supported,whereas that between the anzioid and usneoid clades needs further *** the second major clade Oropogon and Platismatia were sister to the parmelioid group,while the position of Omphalora was not fully *** study demonstrates the power of genome-scale data sets to resolve long-standing,ambiguous phylogenetic rela-tionships of lichen-forming ***,the topology inferred in this study will provide a valuable framework for better understanding diversification in the most diverse lineage of lichen-forming fungi,Parmeliaceae.

If the 20th century was the age of mapping and controlling the external world,the 21st century is the biomedical age of mapping and controlling the biological internal *** biomedical age is bringing new technological breakthroughs for sensing and controlling human biomolecules,cells,tissues,and organs,which underpin new frontiers in the biomedical discovery,data,biomanufacturing,and translational *** article reviews what we believe will be the next wave of biomedical engineering(BME)education in support of the biomedical age,what we have termed BME *** 2.0 was announced on October 122017 at BMES 49(https://***/news-events/news/miller-opens-2017-bmes-annual-meeting-with-vision-for-new-bme-era/).We present several principles upon which we believe the BME 2.0 curriculum should be constructed,and from these principles,we describe what view as the foundations that form the next generations of curricula in support of the BME *** core principles of BME 2.0 education are(a)educate students bilingually,from day 1,in the languages of modern molecular biology and the analytical modeling of complex biological systems;(b)prepare every student to be a biomedical data scientist;(c)build a unique BME community for discovery and innovation via a vertically integrated and convergent learning environment spanning the university and hospital systems;(d)champion an educational culture of inclusive excellence;and(e)codify in the curriculum ongoing discoveries at the frontiers of the discipline,thus ensuring BME 2.0 as a launchpad for training the future leaders of the biotechnology *** envision that the BME 2.0 education is the path for providing every student with the training to lead in this new era of engineering the future of medicine in the 21st century.
