Obesity is linked to poorer cognitive performance, both of which may result from eating high-fat foods during development. In the present study, pre-and periadolescent (postnatal days 21 to 40) male rats were fed high fat (HF), high sugar (HS), or rodent chow (Chow) diets. After conditioning for 16 days with either Cheetos? (high-fat) or Froot Loops? (high-sugar) unconditioned stimuli (US) on one side of a conditioned place preference (CPP) apparatus, rats were tested on postnatal day 61 for a place preference. Chow rats preferred the US-paired side, but HF rats showed no preference. HS rats preferred the side paired with Cheetos? but not with Froot Loops?. In spite of these deficits, object recognition, a nonassociative learning task, was not impaired. These results show mixed support for the specificity hypothesis, which predicts that CPP deficits will be nutrient-specific. The results show for the first time that eating a HS diet leads to a nutrient-specific CPP deficit (for HS foods), whereas eating a HF diet leads to a general CPP deficit (for HS and HF foods).

Background:Survival from pancreatic cancer is low *** the US,the 5-year relative survival has been slightly higher for women,whites and younger patients than for their counterparts,and differences in age and stage at diagnosis[Corrections added Nov 16,2022,after first online publication:a new affiliation is added to Maja Nikšić]may contribute to this *** aimed to examine trends in survival by race,stage,age and sex for adults(15-99 years)diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the ***:This population-based study included 399,427 adults registered with pancreatic cancer in 41 US state cancer registries during 2001-2014,with followup to December 31,*** estimated age-specific and age-standardized net survival at 1 and 5 ***:Overall,12.3%of patients were blacks,and 84.2%were *** 9.5%of patients were diagnosed with localized disease,but 50.5%were diagnosed at an advanced stage;slightly more among blacks,mainly among *** substantial changes were seen over time(2001-2003,2004-2008,2009-2014).In general,1-year net survival was higher in whites than in blacks(26.1%vs.22.1%during 2001-2003,35.1%vs.31.4%during 2009-2014).This difference was particularly evident among patients with localized disease(49.6%in whites vs.44.6%in blacks during 2001-2003,60.1%vs.55.3%during 2009-2014).The survival gap between blacks and whites with localized disease was persistent at 5 years after diagnosis,and it widened over time(from 24.0%vs.21.3%during 2001-2003 to 39.7%vs.31.0%during 2009-2014).The survival gap was wider among men than among ***:Gaps in 1-and 5-year survival between blacks and whites were persistent throughout 2001-2014,especially for patients diagnosed with a localized tumor,for which surgery is currently the only treatment modality with the potential for cure.

e-e·卡明斯是美国20世纪的著名的诗人,在美国文学史上占有重要的地位。早期,有些文学批评家认为他创作的视觉诗歌不能被称为“诗歌”,但也有批评家认为,卡明斯既独特又新颖的写法给予诗歌全新的创作方式,也给了他不同于其他美国诗人的特有风格①。可惜,他在中国诗歌研究领域没有受到应有的重视,到目前为止,只有一本比较完整的卡明斯诗选的中译版,而研究他的学者也寥寥无几。据笔者所知,目前卡明斯的汉译版还没有完全把握卡明斯视觉诗歌中的核心——趣味性与视觉性,以至于少有中国学者能深刻地阐释他诗歌的独特写法。另外,由于汉语所特有的优势——象形性,笔者认为没有任何一个语言更适合用来翻译卡明斯的视觉性作品。这篇论文拟通过分析现今卡明斯的视觉诗歌的汉译情况,来把这类诗歌跟表意字进行对比,最后考虑用一种全新的方法探讨卡明斯视觉性翻译模式。这篇论文的结构是先介绍研究缘起,再是研究现状,理论材料与方法。主体部分共为三章。论文第一章着重分析“意象诗歌”,或称之为“视觉诗歌”的特点,本章拟从几个有代表性的诗人的对比中,对卡明斯的诗歌进行分类,力图筛选可以被称为“视觉性”或“意象”诗歌,再用他的这些诗歌跟其他“意象诗歌”进行对比。并从“视觉诗歌”的写法入手,说明为什么有些诗歌比较适合视觉性翻译的道理。第二章拟仔细分析卡明斯“视觉诗歌”的代表作品,挖掘卡明斯的创作手法与视觉性元素究竟如何影响诗歌的意义,然后分析卡明斯诗歌目前的汉译情况。虽然目前的汉译质量尚可,但是笔者认为,由于缺少最主要的元素,导致卡明斯诗歌翻译很不到位,所以还值得考虑其他的翻译方式,包括表意字式写法与书法。论文第三章主要分析象形字的甲骨文与金文的视觉性,并涉及卡明斯身边的著名诗人——埃兹拉·庞德所提出的“象形字与一种表意字写法”的相关理论,来讨论汉语的视觉性。从象形字的视觉性角度出发,论文力图探究卡明斯视觉诗歌是如何与象形字或表意字发生关联,给研究者更加合适的翻译模式提供可能。该文力图从语言学、诗学以及美学角度,分析卡明斯的诗歌如何通过视觉性呈现在中国读者面前,如何把握卡明斯诗歌中的“趣味性”,以及探讨如何借助象形文字翻译卡明斯视觉诗歌的可能性。

early versus Late Tracheostomy for Ventilator Dependence after Cardiovascular Surgery: Long-Term Results

Although concerns exist about the possibility of infecting a sternotomy wound by performing a tracheostomy early after cardiac surgery, it has been shown that tracheostomy performed before postoperative day 10 can improve outcomes for cardiovascular surgery patients who require long-term ventilation. We retrospectively reviewed all charts for patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery and required tracheostomy at a single-institution site from January 2005 to July 2012. Patients were divided into two groups based upon whether their tracheostomy was performed less than 10 days after their initial operation (early tracheostomy) or ≥10 days after their initial operation (late tracheostomy). Preoperative demographics and postoperative complications were studied. There were no new mediastinitis episodes following tracheostomy. early tracheostomy was associated with higher 90-day (74.4% vs 56.8%) and 180-day (47.4% vs 28.7%, p 0.047) survival when compared to late tracheostomy. early tracheostomy after cardiovascular surgery does not seem to be associated with an increased rate of mediastinitis but is associated with improved survival.

AIM: To establish a link between the risk of diabetes with haemoglobinopathies by examining available evidence of the effects of iron and blood glucose homeostasis from molecular to epidemiological ***: A systematic literature search was performed using electronic literature databases using various search terms. The International Diabetes Federation World Atlas was used to generate a list of populations with high rates of diabetes. Pub Med, Scopus and Google Scholar were used to identify which of these populations also had a reported prevalence of haemoglobin ***: Abnormalities in iron homeostasis leads to increases in reactive oxygen species in the blood. This promotes oxidative stress which contributes to peripheral resistance to insulin in two ways:(1) reduced insulin/insulin receptor interaction; and(2) β-cell dysfunction. Hepcidin is crucial in terms of maintaining appropriate amounts of iron in the body and is in turn affected by haemoglobinopathies. Hepcidin also has other metabolic effects in places such as the liver but so far the extent of these is not well understood. It does however directly control the levels of serum ferritin. High serum ferritin is found in obese patients and those with diabetes and a meta-analysis of the various studies shows that high serum ferritin does indeed increase diabetes ***: From an epidemiological standpoint, it is plausible that the well-documented protective effects of haemoglobinopathies with regard to malaria may have also offered other evolutionary advantages. By contributing to peripheral insulin resistance, haemoglobinopathies may have helped to sculpt the so-called "thrifty genotype", which hypothetically is advantageous in times of famine. The prevalence data however is not extensive enough to provide concrete associations between diabetes and haemoglobinopathies- more precise studies are required.

Background: The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme, launched in 1975 by the Government of India, provides various health services to children and their mothers at ICDS centres. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to understand 1) the extent to which women living in Rajasthan, India utilize services provided by ICDS centres and 2) the factors that are associated with their use. Methods: Freedom from Hunger and Freedom from Hunger India Trust, in collaboration with two local partners in Rajasthan, India, conducted a baseline assessment with 403 pregnant women and women with young children belonging to self-help groups to compare use of ICDS centres with key demographic variables and measures of poverty, food security and nutrition, curative care related to diarrhea, coping strategies, and household decision-making. Results: The results revealed that households that accessed ICDS services were more likely to report receiving nutrition information from ICDS centres, to purchase ORS in the last year, and to give oral rehydration solution (ORS) to children who had diarrhea. Women who decide how much food to serve each family member or spend money without discussing it first with someone else were more likely to receive benefits from ICDS centres. Those who spoke with their spouse about household nutrition needs were less likely to report accessing ICDS services. Conclusion: Interventions aimed at increasing utilization of ICDS centres in this region may find it beneficial to increase female participation in health care decisions, likely through spousal communication and gender relations.

Background: PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors have emerged as promising treatments for patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).Methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis of PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors in HNSCC. Outcomes: median overall survival (mOS), median progression-free survival (mPFS), Response evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (ReCIST) and treatment-related adverse events (TRAes).Results: eleven trials reported data on 1088 patients (mean age: 59.9 years, range: 18-90). The total mOS was 7.97 months (range: 6.0-16.5). Mean mPFS for all studies was 2.84 months (range: 1.9-6.5). PD-1 inhibitors had a lower rate of ReCIST Progressive Disease than PD-L1 inhibitors (42.61%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 36.29-49.06 vs. 56.79%, 95% CI: 49.18-64.19,P e rate of TRAes of any grade (62.7%, 95% CI: 59.8-65.6) did not ***: Meta-analysis shows the efficacy of PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors in HNSCC and suggests a possible difference in certain ReCIST criterion between PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors. Future work to investigate the clinical significance of these findings is warranted.

Gelatin based adhesives have been used in the last decades in different biomedical applications due to the excellent biocompatibility,easy processability,transparency,non-toxicity,and reasonable mechanical properties to mimic the extracellular matrix(eCM).Gelatin adhesives can be easily tuned to gain different viscoelastic and mechanical properties that facilitate its ocular *** herein grafted glycidyl methacrylate on the gelatin backbone with a simple chemical modification of the precursor,utilizing epoxide ring-opening reactions and visible *** chemical modification allows the obtaining of an elastic protein-based hydrogel(GeLGYM)with excellent biomimetic properties,approaching those of the native *** can be modulated to be stretched up to 4 times its initial length and withstand high tensile stresses up to 1.95 MPa with compressive strains as high as 80%compared to Gelatin-methacryloyl(GeIMA),the most studied derivative of gelatin used as a *** is also highly biocompatible and supports cellular adhesion,proliferation,and migration in both 2 and 3-dimensional *** characteristics along with its super adhesion to biological tissues such as cornea,aorta,heart,muscle,kidney,liver,and spleen suggest widespread applications of this hydrogel in many biomedical areas such as transplantation,tissue adhesive,wound dressing,bioprinting,and drug and cell delivery.
