Background The survival of preterm infants has improved over the last decade,but impaired brain development leading to poor neurological outcomes is still a major comorbidity associated with *** aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of nutrition on neurodevelopment in preterm infants and identify markers for improved *** Totally 67 premature infants with a gestational age of 24–34 weeks and a birth weight of 450–2085 g were *** parameters and documented diet were collected from medical *** nutritional analysis comprised the protein,fat,carbohydrate,and energy intake during different time *** development was assessed by determining deep gray matter(DGM;basal ganglia and thalamus)and lateral ventricular(LV)volumes as measured on cerebral magnetic resonance imaging scans obtained at term-equivalent age(TEA),and potential associations between nutrition and brain volumetrics were detected by regression *** We observed a negative correlation between mean daily protein intake in the third postnatal week and MRI-measured DGM volume at TEA(P=0.007).In contrast,head circumference at a corrected age of 35 weeks gestation(P<0.001)and mean daily fat intake in the fourth postnatal week(P=0.004)were positively correlated with DGM ***,mean daily carbohydrate intake in the first postnatal week(P=0.010)and intraventricular hemorrhage(P=0.003)were revealed as independent predictors of LV *** The study emphasizes the importance of nutrition for brain development following preterm birth.

Enhancement of oxygen reduction activity and stability via introducing acid-resistant refractory Mo and regulating the near-surface Pt content

Although Pt Ni catalyst possesses good oxygen reduction activity, its poor stability is the main obstacle for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs). In this work, we introduce the acid-resistant refractory Mo to enhance the structure stability and modify the electronic structure of Pt in the prepared PtNi catalyst, improving the catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR). In addition, near-surface Pt content in the nanoparticle is also optimized to balance the ORR activity and stability. The electrochemical results show that the alloy formed by Mo and Pt Ni is obviously more stable than the PtNi alloy alone, because the acid-resistant Mo and its oxides effectively prevent the dissolution of Pt. Especially, the Pt3 Ni3 MoN/C exhibits the optimal ORR catalytic performance in O2-saturated 0.1 mol L^(-1) HClO4 aqueous solutions, with mass activity(MA) of 900 m A mg^(-1) Pt at 0.90 V vs. RHE, which is 3.75 times enhancement compared with the commercial Pt/C(240 mA mg^(-1) Pt). After 30 k accelerated durability tests, its MA(690 m A mg^(-1) Pt) is still 2.88 times higher than the pristine Pt/C. This study thus provides a valuable method to design stable ORR catalysts with high efficiency and has great significance for the commercialization of PEMFCs.

Prevalence of lactase persistent/non-persistent genotypes and milk consumption in a young population in north-west Russia

AIM： TO estimate the prevalence of the lactase non-persistent genotype （C/C-23910） in a northern Russian population in accordance with ethnicity, and to evaluate self-reported milk consumption depending on lactase activity. METHODS： Blood samples for genotyping lactase activity, defining the C/T-13910 variant by polymerase chain reaction, and direct sequencing were taken from 231 medical students of Russian origin aged 17-26 years. We analyzed milk product consumption by questionnaire which was specially designed for the estimation of milk consumption and abdominal complaints. RESULTS： We found that the prevalence of the C/C-13190 genotype in the northern Russian population was 35.6%. The other genotypes nearby C/T-13910 and associated with lactase activity were not present in the study population. The consumption of milk among people with the non-persistent genotype tended to be lower than among the lactose tolerant subjects, but was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION： An investigation of the lactase persistent genotype in a northern Russian population has not been performed before, The genotype did not affect the consumption of milk products in this population which could be explained by low consumption of milk products among the entire study population.

Zingiber officinale extends Drosophila melanogaster life span in xenobiotic-induced oxidative stress conditions

BACKGROUND： The possibility of dietary ginger to enhance oxidative stress resistance and to extend life span was studied on Drosophila melanogaster. METHODS： Oxidative stress was induced by a reducing agent dithiothreitol. Experimental groups of male D. melanogaster were cultured on media containing： 1） no additive; 2） dithiothreitol, added into the nutritional mixture to the final concentration of 10 mM; 3） 25 mg of ginger powder g^-1 of the nutritional mixture; and 4） 10 mM ofdithiothreitol and 25 mg of ginger powder g l of the nutritional mixture. The number of alive fruit flies was inspected daily, and mean life span was determined for each experimental group. RESULTS： The addition of dithiothreitol to D. melanogaster nutritional mixture was established to result in an increase in concentration of two markers of oxidative stress conditions （thiobarbituric acid reactive substances as products of lipid peroxidation and carbonylated proteins as products of protein oxidation） in fly tissues. It was followed by significant reduction of mean life span and maximum life span of the last 10% of flies. Plant preparation, being added simultaneously with dithiothreitol, significantly diminished the negative effects of this xenobiotic. In conditions of additional stress load induced by hydrogen peroxide or high temperature, survival of insects treated with dithiothreitol on the background of ginger powder was the highest. CONCLUSIONS： Thus, the presented data give the evidence that ginger preparations can reduce oxidative stress outcomes and significantly increase the life expectancy of fruit flies in stress conditions.

Anti-inflammatory Effects of Sanguisorbae Radix on Contact Dermatitis Induced by Dinitrofluorobenzene in Mice

Objective:To investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of Sanguisorbae Radix on contact dermatitis(CD).Methods:Mice were sensitized by painting 30μL of 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene(DNFB)onto each ear for 3 *** days later,mice were challenged by painting with 50μL of DNFB onto the shaved dorsum every 2 *** Radix methanol extract(MESR)was applied onto the shaved dorsum every 2 *** effects of MESR on skin thickness,skin weights,histopathological changes,skin lesions and cytokine production in DNFB-induced CD mice were investigated,as well as its effects on body weights and spleen/body weight ***:Topical application of MESR effectively inhibited enlargement of skin thickness and weight(P<0.05).MESR treatment also inhibited hyperplasia,spongiosis and immune cell infiltration induced by DNFB in inflamed tissues and improved lesions on dorsum skin in CD ***,treatment with MESR suppressed the increase in the levels of tumor necrosis factor α(TNF-α,P<0.01)and interferonγ(IFN-γ,P<0.05),***,MESR had no effect on body weight gain or spleen/body weight ***:These data suggest that MESR acts as an anti-inflammatory agent that decreases the production of TNF-α and IFN-γ,resulting in reductions of skin lesions and histopathological changes in inflamed skin tissues.

Cdk2 acts upstream of mitochondrial permeability transition during paclitaxel-induced apoptosis

Sequential activation of cyclin-dependent kinases(Cdks)controls mammalian cell *** we demonstrate that the upregulation of cyclin-dependent kinase 2(Cdk2)activity coincides with the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential(MMP)in paclitaxel-induced *** expression of the dominant negative Cdk2(Cdk2-dn)and a specific Cdk2 inhibitor,p21WAF1/CIP1,effectively suppresses the loss of MMP,the release of cytochrome c,and subsequent activation of caspase-3 in paclitaxel-treated *** forced activation of Cdk2 by overexpression of cyclin A dramatically promotes these *** further show that Cdk2 activation status does not interfere with a procedure that lies downstream of cytochrome c release induced by Bax *** findings suggest that Cdk2 kinase can regulate apoptosis at earlier stages than mitochondrial permeability transition and cytochrome c release.

The Concept of the Higher/the Lower Energy in the Atmopadesa Satakam of Narayana Guru

The paper presents an analysis of the concept of the higher/the lower energy （para-apara maya/prakrti/sakti） in the Atmopadesa Satakam （＂One Hundred Verses of Self-instruction＂）, the most important philosophical work of Narayana Guru composed in Malayalam. In order to better understand the issue, the same pair of opposites is discussed at length on the basis of Narayana＇s earlier Malayalam poems--devotional hymns （Siva Satakarn--＂One Hundred Verses on Siva＂, Kah Natakam--＂Dance of Kali＂, and Janani Nava Ratna Manjari--＂Nine Gemmed Bouquet to Mother＂） as well as later Sanskrit philosophical work [Darsuna Mala--＂Garland of Visions＂）. The comparative analysis of these texts demonstrates that--whereas Darsana Mala reflects more or less accurately Vedantic concepts, Atrnopadesa Satakam presents deeply syncretic formation, influenced to a large extent by philosophical systems related to bhakti （devotion）, like Sata or Saiva Siddhanta. The reason for such a state of affairs could be the purpose of Malayalam work destined to become vehicle for instructions given to lower caste people in Kerala. The paper offers an analysis of the relevant passages of the texts accompanied with explanatory notes extracted from the commentarial literature.
