Combating wind erosion through soil stabilization under simulated wind flow condition -Case of Kuwait

The soil survey of Kuwait has revealed the landscapes dominated by loose sandy material, that are vulnerable to wind erosion. Globally three modes of soil particle movement (creep, saltation & sus-pension) by wind have been recognized. To evaluate these modes in the deserts of Kuwait, sixty surface soil samples were collected and analyzed for particle sizes to quantify relative occurrence of modes of particle movement in the deserts of Kuwait. This analysis revealed distribution of particles in the size ranges, as follows: saltation (70%) > Creep (20%) > Suspension (10%) confirming saltation is the main mode of soil movement. This has provided basic information to set up a pilot scale experiment to reduce the wind erosion rate through sand stabilization using various sand binding products in three treat-ments;T1 (native sandy soil);T2 (sand mixed with biochar and animal manure);T3 (sand mixed with biochar, animal manure, Urea Formaldehyde (UF), Sulfonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde (SNF), and Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA). The results showed that the erosion rate of native sandy soil (T1) has increased from 3.33, 4.77 to 7.35 g/(m2. min) when wind speed was increased from 5, 10 to 15 m/s, respectively. At the same wind speeds, the measured erosion loss was 1.99, 3.07, 5.32 g/(m2. min) in T2 and 1.17, 2.6, 4.24 g/(m2. min) in T3. From these results, it can be concluded that there is a possibility to reduce wind erosion in the deserts of Kuwait through sand stabilization and save the deserts from further degradation.

The aim of this work is to study the heterogeneous oxidative degradation of ofloxacin antibiotic using a composite material prepared from sodium alginate and cyclohexane dinitrilo tetraacetic acid（CDTA）. The characterization tests indicated the successful incorporation of metal chelator and iron. It was also demonstrated that the synthesized beads are mesoporous. The influence of several experimental parameters（i.e.： H2O2 dose,working temperature, beads loading and initial drug concentration） on the process performances was evaluated. The reaction temperature significantly affects the drug conversion efficiency. It was also observed that the synthesized material was efficient toward the target antibiotic degradation in the presence of small quantities of hydrogen peroxide. Under optimum conditions（0.05 g of granules, initial drug concentration = 10 mg/L,25 μL of 10 mmol/L H2O2）, conducted in a batch reaction, 94% degradation of ofloxacin was reached. The results also indicate that the composite material showed a reasonable stability;a relatively low decrease of activity after four successive runs（only 9%） and a negligible iron leaching（0.8%） have been observed. The synthesized composite material offered interesting advantages in terms of simplicity, good stability, ease of recovery from the liquid medium after use and its efficiency in the presence of low quantities of oxidant. It constitutes a good candidate in the water treatment area.

BACKGROUND With improved survival in gastric cancer patients,health-related quality of life has become an important clinical endpoint alongside primary oncological *** To investigate health-related quality of life after various surgical procedures for gastric cancer *** The validated Slovenian version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire(QLQ-C30)and its gastric cancer-specific module(QLQ STO-22)was sent for self-completion to patients that underwent curative resection for gastric adenocarcinoma between January 2014 and December 2018 at our *** total,116 patients *** were compared between patients after subtotal distal vs total gastrectomy and patients after subtotal distal gastrectomy with Billroth II vs Roux-en-Y *** Interestingly,the extent of resection did not influence daily functioning;however,more dysphagia and eating restrictions were reported in patients after total gastrectomy when compared to patients after subtotal distal ***,patients with Billroth II reconstruction after subtotal distal resection experienced worse physical and role functioning and reported more pain,fatigue and reflux compared to Roux-en-Y *** Based on our results,Roux-en-Y reconstruction after subtotal distal gastrectomy should be preferred over Billroth II *** data obtained from this study will help surgeons when preoperatively informing their patients about expected functional outcomes after gastrectomy and enable them to ensure proper supportive care of their patients in the postoperative period.

Although the general concept of nanotechnology relies on exploitation of size-dependent properties of nanoscaled materials,the relation between the size/morphology of nanoparticles with their biological activity remains not well ***,we aimed at investigating the biological activity of Se nanoparticles,one of the most promising candidates of nanomaterials for biomedicine,possessing the same crystal structure,but differing in morphology(nanorods *** particles)and aspect ratios(AR,11.5 vs.22.3 vs.1.0)in human cells and BALB/c ***,we report that in case of nanorod-shaped Se nanomaterials,AR is a critical factor describing their cytotoxicity and ***,spherical nanoparticles(AR 1.0)do not fit this statement and exhibit markedly higher cytotoxicity than lower-AR Se *** of cytotoxicity,we also show that morphology and size substantially affect the uptake and intracellular fate of Se *** line with in vitro data,in vivo *** of Se nanomaterials revealed the highest toxicity for higher-AR nanorods followed by spherical nanoparticles and lower-AR ***,we revealed that Se nanomaterials are able to alter intracellular redox homeostasis,and affect the acidic intracellular vesicles and cytoskeletal architecture in a size-and morphology-dependent *** the tested nanoparticles were produced from the similar sources,their behavior differs markedly,since each type is promising for several various application scenarios,and the presented testing protocol could serve as a concept standardizing the biological relevance of the size and morphology of the various types of nanomaterials and nanoparticles.
