Octahedral PtNi nanoparticles with controlled surface structure and composition for oxygen reduction reaction

Controlling the surface structure and composi- tion at the atomic level is an effective way to tune the cat- alytic properties of bimetallic catalysts. Herein, we demon- strate a generalized strategy to synthesize highly monodis- perse, surfactant-free octahedral PtxNi1-x nanoparticles with tunable surface structure and composition. With increasing the Ni content in the bulk composition, the degree of concave- ness of the octahedral PtxNi1-x nanoparticles increases. We systematically studied the correlation between their surface structure/composition and their observed oxygen reduction activity. Electrochemical studies have shown that all the octa- hedral PtxNi1-x nanoparticles exhibit enhanced oxygen reduc- tion activity relative to the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. More importantly, we find that the surface struc- ture and composition of the octahedral PtxNi1-x nanoparti- cles have significant effect on their oxygen reduction activ- ity. Among the studied PtxNi1-x nanoparticles, the octahedral PtlNi1 nauoparticles with slight concaveness in its （111） facet show the highest activity. At 0.90 V vs. RHE, the Pt mass and specific activity of the octahedral PhNil nanoparticles are 7.0 and 7.5-fold higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst, re- spectively. The present work not only provides a generalized strategy to synthesize highly monodisperse, surfactant-free octahedral PtxNi1-x nanoparticles with tunable surface struc- ture and composition, but also provides insights to the struc- ture-activity correlation.

Allele-specific PCR genotyping of the HSP70 gene polymorphism discriminating the green and red color variants sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus)

Color variation is a well-known feature of sea cucumbers （Apostichopus japonicus）, which are classified into three groups based on their colors of red, green and black. It is also one of the most important traits related to how they taste, and it thereby affects their market price. Attempts were made to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） and to analyze differences associated with SNP genotypes between green and red color variants using HSP70 as the target gene. The HSP70 gene, which is found universally in organisms from bacteria to humans, is one of the most evolutionarily conserved genes and the most widely studied biomarker of stress response. DNA fragments of 1074 bp covering a partial sequence of the sea cucumber HSP70 gene, were amplified from both red and green variants, and subsequently analyzed for the presence of SNPs. Twenty-seven polymorphic sites in total, including heterozygous sites, were observed. Of these, six sites were found to be significantly different SNP genotypes between green and red variants. Furthermore, PCR with an internal primer designed to include an allelespecific SNP at the 3＇ end （site 443） showed differentiation between the two variants, 100% and 4.2% amplification in green and red variants, respectively. The validated SNPs may serve as informative genetic markers that can be used to distinguish variants at the early developmental stage, prior to color differentiation.

Development of the Guideline for HIV Testing in South Korea with Low Prevalence of HIV-1 Infection Based on the Expert Consensus

Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a guideline for HIV testing in South Korea where the HIV prevalence is very low. It is necessary to make the recommendations presented here based on the epidemiology of opportunistic infection and cancer in the community. Methods: The development of a guideline for HIV testing was conducted using literature reviews and the agreement of Korean experts for HIV patients using a two-round Delphi consensus technique. Each expert was asked to independently answer to each item related to HIV risk. Ten experts participated in the two-round survey. Results: The individual items were determined based on the following categories: high risk behavior, symptom and diseases, colo-rectal diseases, uro-genital diseases and gynecology, skin and oral diseases. The final guideline consisted of 4-scale agreement rating (strongly recommended, recommended, not routinely recommended, no recommendation for routine provision). Discussion: We have developed the guideline for HIV testing in a country where the HIV prevalence is low based on a systematic investigation and expert consensus.

Background: A phase II clinical trial of the comparison between eribulin plus gemcitabine (EG) and paclitaxel plus gemcitabine (PG) as first-line chemotherapy for patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) found that the EG regimen was less neurotoxic, but was similar in efficacy to the PG regimen. In the present study, we analyzed functional assessment of cancer therapy-taxane (FACT-Taxane) questionnaires from patients in this clinical trial to determine their quality of life (QoL). Methods: QoL was assessed using the Korean version of the FACT-Taxane questionnaires. After baseline assessment, QoL was assessed every 2 cycles for 12 cycles and every 3 cycles thereafter. The linear mixed model was used to evaluate the difference in QoL between the EG and PG arms. Results: Of the 118 enrolled patients, 117 responded to the FACT-Taxane questionnaires at baseline, 1 in the PG arm did not. Baseline QoL scores were not different between the EG and PG arms. During treatment, taxane subscale scores were significantly higher in the PG arm than in the EG arm after 2-13 cycles of chemotherapy (all P < 0.05), except for the 11th cycle. Neuropathy-specific analysis showed that patients in the PG arm had earlier and more severe neuropathic symptoms than those in the EG arm (P < 0.001). Conclusions: In our QoL analysis, the EG regimen delayed and decreased neuropathy as compared with the PG regimen. Therefore, eribulin would be a reasonable substitute for paclitaxel as first-line chemotherapy for MBC.

Finite Element Analysis of Tire Traction Using a Rubber-Ice Friction Model

The friction of road surface covered by snow or ice is very low and that results in reducing vehicle traction forces and potential traffic accidents. In general, to establish a master curve on a rubber-ice friction model is difficult because the ice surface, being not far removed from its melting point, reacts itself very sen-sitively to pressure, speed, and temperature changes. In this paper, an accepta-ble frictional interaction model was implemented to finite element method to rationally examine the frictional interaction behavior on ice between the tire and the road surface. The formula of friction characteristic according to tem-perature and sliding velocity on the ice surface was applied for tire traction analysis. Numerical results were verified by comparing the outdoor test data and it was confirmed to indicate similar correlation. It is found that the rub-ber-ice friction model will be useful for the improvement of the ice traction performance of tire.

Reinfection rate and endoscopic changes after successful eradication of Helicobacter pylori

AIM:To determine the long-term outcomes regarding reinfection with Helicobacter pylori(***)and endoscopic changes after successful *** eradication. Food waste is recognized as a valuable source for potential agricultural applications to supply organic matter and nutrients to arable ***,the information on the combined application of food waste and the plant growth-promoting bacterial strain,Chlorella,related to plant metabolic features and sodium chloride content in arable soil is *** present study was conducted to investigate the exogenous application of food waste along with Chlorella,which improved the physio-morphological features of red *** results revealed that this combination enhanced the organic matter in the soil,ultimately improving the fertility rate of the soil,and the physio-morphological features,such as chlorophyll a content(24.5±0.7),root(7.8±0.7)cm and shoot length(12.1±0.7)cm,fresh weight(2.1±0.05)g,dry weight(0.19±0.05)g,mineral contents,and hormonal concentration(ABA by up to 2 folds).The combined treatment also minimized free radicals via the activation of the intrinsic antioxidant series cascade and electrolyte *** findings showed that adding Chlorella and food wastes improved growth characteristics and can be used as a green bio-fertilizer for sustainable agriculture.

A potential oncogenic role of the commonly observed E2F5 overexpression in hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: To explore the expression pattern of E2F5 in primary hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) and elucidate the roles of E2F5 in hepatocarcinogenesis. METHODS: E2F5 expression was analyzed in 120 primary HCCs and 29 normal liver tissues by immunohistochemistry analysis. E2F5-small interfering RNA was transfected into HepG2, an E2F5-overexpressed HCC cell line. After E2F5 knockdown, cell growth capacity and migrating potential were examined. RESULTS: E2F5 was significantly overexpressed in primary HCCs compared with normal liver tissues (P = 0.008). The E2F5-silenced cells showed significantly reduced proliferation (P = 0.004). On the colony formation and soft agar assays, the number of colonies was significantly reduced in E2F5-silenced cells (P = 0.004 and P = 0.009, respectively). E2F5 knockdown resulted in the accumulation of G0/G1 phase cells and a reduction of S phase cells. The number of migrating/invading cells was also reduced after E2F5 knockdown (P = 0.021). CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first evidence that E2F5 is commonly overexpressed in primary HCC and that E2F5 knockdown significantly repressed the growth of HCC cells.
