Uncovering the dominant contribution of intermediate volatility compounds in secondary organic aerosol formation from biomass-burning emissions

Organic vapors from biomass burning are a major source of secondary organic aerosols(SOAs). Previous smog chamber studies found that the SOA contributors in biomass-burning emissions are mainly volatile organic compounds(VOCs). While intermediate volatility organic compounds(IVOCs) are efficient SOA precursors and contribute a considerable fraction of biomass-burning emissions, their contribution to SOA formation has not been directly observed. here, by deploying a newly-developed oxidation flow reactor to study SOA formation from wood burning, we find that IVOCs can contribute ～70% of the formed SOA, i.e.>2 times more than VOCs. This previously missing SOA fraction is interpreted to be due to the high wall losses of semi-volatile oxidation products of IVOCs in smog chambers. The finding in this study reveals that SOA production from biomass burning is much higher than previously thought, and highlights the urgent need for more research on the IVOCs from biomass burning and potentially other emission sources.

Lug joints are preferred joineries for transferring heavy loads to parent components in aerospace *** experience corrosion due to environmental conditions,improper surface finishes and rubbing displacement between the pin and *** causes damage of different sizes and shapes near the *** degradation due to corrosion-induced damage is modelled as a through-pit at one of the identified critical locations through stress *** effect of this pit on fatigue crack initiation life is ***-hole is pre-stressed by cold-working and the benefits of inducing plastic wake on the intended performance of the lug joint during the damages due to corrosion are brought out and compared with non-cold-worked *** analysis is performed on this lug joint with *** results obtained highlight the benefits of cold-working and the methodology can be extended to damage growth and analyse the effect of surface treatments for better structural integrity of components of aerospace vehicles.

Synthesis and characteristics of transparent Gd_(2)O_(3)ceramics with cubic structure

Transparent Gd_(2)O_(3)ceramics with a cubic crystal structure were successfully synthesized for the first *** Gd_(2)O_(3)ceramics subjected to hot isostatic press(hIP)at 1070℃consisted of uniform grains of 2-3μm,and only a few residual pores could be detected inside the materials.X-ray diffraction(XRD)shows that the obtained polycrystalline materials have a cubic crystal structure,and the transmission polarized light observation shows that there is no birefringence inside the materials,indicating inherent optical properties of the cubic crystal *** optical absorption edge is 640 nm(optical band gap:2.1 eV),and the transmittance in the visible to near-infrared region is 72%,which is close to the theoretical transmittance calculated from Fresnel *** constant of this material is almost wavelength-independent,and it is diamagnetic since it has the opposite polarity to that of common paramagnetic materials.

The comprehension of sediment grain size parameters and the corresponding sedimentary environment holds paramount importance in elucidating the engineering geological attributes of the subaqueous *** study delineated the sedimentary environment zoning in the northern sea area of Qingdao through cluster analysis of grain size parameters derived from 123 surface sediment *** study analyzed the correlation between sediment geotechnical indices and grain size parameters across diverse sedimentary environments.A correlation equation was established for samples exhibiting a strong *** study found four distinct sedimentary environments in the study area:coastal,transitional,shallow sea,and *** the same sedimentary environment,the average grain size and sorting coefficient exhibit significant correlations with geotechnical indices such as water content,density,shear strength,plastic limit,liquid limit,and plastic ***,notable disparities in the correlation between grain size parameters and geotechnical indices emerge across different sedimentary environments.

Bottom water coning is the main reason to reduce the recovery of horizontal bottom water reservoir. By water coning, we mean the oil-water interface changes from a horizontal state to a mound-shaped cone and breaks through to the wellbore. Autonomous inflow control device(AICD) is an important instrument maintain normal production after bottom water coning, however, the resistance increasing ability of the swirl type AICD is insufficient at present, which seriously affects the water control effect. Aiming this problem, this paper designs a multi-stage resistance-increasing and composite type AICD. The separation mechanism of oil-water two phases in this structure, the resistance form of oil-water single phase and the resistance-increasing principle of water phase are analyzed. Establishing the dual-phase multi-stage separation and resistance-increasing model, and verified by measuring the throttling pressure drop and oil-water volume fraction of the AICD, it is found that the composite type AICD has the effect of ICD and AICD at the same time, which can balance the production rate of each well section at the initial stage of production, delay the occurrence of bottom water coning. In the middle and later stages of production, water-blocking can be effectively increased to achieve water control and stable *** structural sensitivity analysis, the influence law of various structural parameters on the water control performance of composite AICD was obtained. The simulation calculation results show that,compared with the existing swirl type AICD, composite AICD has higher sensitivity to moisture content,the water phase throttling pressure drop is increased by 4.5 times on average. The composite AICD is suitable for the entire stage of horizontal well production.

The collapse of granular material in fluids is a prevalent phenomenon in both natural and industrial processes,displaying a notable sensitivity to initial configuration of the *** study is specifically oriented towards falling process of collapsing material under various fluid conditions,employing the computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method(CFD-DEm)to primarily investigate the dynamics and scaling laws of deposit morphology of collapsed *** a comprehensive analysis of particle sedimentation in fluids,we introduce a refined inertial characteristic time for granular collapse within the inertial ***,we propose modifications to conventional fluid-particle density ratio and Reynolds number,aiming to enhance the accuracy of depicting collapse dynamics and identifying flow regimes across diverse column heights and fluid ***,we construct a phase diagram of flow regimes using modified dimensionless numbers,emphasizing the role of column height in transition between viscous and inertial *** parameters demonstrate enhanced relevance in governing the collapse of immersed granular columns,thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of fluid-particle interations in dense granular flows under different regimes.
