The emergence of SARS-Co V-2 variant of concern omicron BA.2 led to high infection incidence rates as well as reduced severity of COVID-19 during the Shanghai Spring epidemic of 2022 [1]. We assessed the role of viral pathogenicity and the effectiveness of inactivated vaccines in a retrospective observational study including 10 258 confirmed COVID-19cases identified between April and June of 2022, from four COVID-19 designated hospitals located in two areas of Shanghai, namely the West Bund and the East Bund, where the populations’ demographic characteristics varied significantly (Table S1, Fig. S1).

For more than a decade,the exfoliation of graphene and other layered materials has led to a tremendous amount of research in two-dimensional(2D)materials,among which 2D transition metal chalcogenides(TMCs)nanomaterials have attracted much attention in a wide range of applications including photoelectric devices,lithium-ion batteries,catalysis,and energy conversion and storage owing to their unique photoelectric physical properties.With such large specific surface area,strong near-infrared(NIR)absorption and abundant chemical element composition,2D TMCs nanomaterials have become good candidates in biomedical imaging and cancer treatment.This review systematically summarizes recent progress on 2D TMCs nanomaterials,which includes their synthesis methods and applications in cancer treatment.At the end of this review,we also highlight the future prospects and challenges of 2D TMCs nanomaterials.It is expected that this work can provide the readers with a detailed overview of the synthesis of 2D TMCs and inspire more novel functional biomaterials based on 2D TMCs for cancer treatment in the future.

The bacterial family Mycobacteriaceae includes pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria,and systematic research on their genome and phenome can give comprehensive perspectives for exploring their disease mechanism.In this study,the pheno-types of Mycobacteriaceae were inferred from available phenomic data,and 82 microbial phenotypic traits were recruited as data elements of the microbial phenome.This Mycobacteriaceae phenome contains five categories and 20 subcategories of polyphasic phenotypes,and three categories and eight subcategories of functional phenotypes,all of which are complemen-tary to the existing data standards of microbial phenotypes.The phenomic data of Mycobacteriaceae strains were compiled by literature mining,third-party database integration,and bioinformatics annotation.The phenotypes were searchable and comparable from the website of the Mycobacteriaceae Phenome Atlas(MPA,https://www.biosi ***/mpa/).A topological data analysis of MPA revealed the co-evolution between Mycobacterium tuberculosis and virulence factors,and uncovered potential pathogenicity-associated phenotypes.Two hundred and sixty potential pathogen-enriched pathways were found by Fisher's exact test.The application of MPA may provide novel insights into the pathogenicity mechanism and antimicrobial targets of Mycobacteriaceae.

This paper explores,through the lens of childhood,the Chinese cultural dynamics that encourage harmonious human relationships at the price of individual development and yet support a deep appreciation of natural human experiences that allows room for the development of individuality.The purpose of such investigation is to reexamine our cultural heritage in regard to the ways we conceptualize human beings and treat them,retracing its promises,difficulties,pitfalls,and spiritual resources,and thus to help reconfigure a new individuality for education.

This paper tackles the issue of education as the process of person-making and attempts to redefine the ideal and unique Chinese person-the Chinese soul-based on a civilizational dialogue and synthesis that would transform modern education and enable education to play a central role in“redeeming modernity”and revitalizing Chinese civilization.The paper briefly analyzes the historical efforts,and failures,to reform the Chinese soul and argues that the 150-year effort to revitalize Chinese culture and transform the Chinese people by way of adopting certain aspects of Western civilization has mostly failed because a sufficiently coherent and meaningful synthesis of the two civilizations was lacking.

Microbes are the oldest inhabitants of Earth. Through billions of years of coevolution with Earth, these creatures, usually invisible to the naked eye, have contributed to shaping the Earth surface, creating an ecosystem habitable for higher organisms including humans. By some estimates, microbes account for up to half of the biomass on the planet today (Whitman et al., 1998). They thrive in every corner of Earth, including harsh habitats such as hot springs, hydrothermal vents, salt and soda lakes, acid mine drainage, deep subsurface, and thus define the boundaries of the biosphere. Microbes also exhibit immense genetic and metabolic diversity. Therefore, it is not surprising that these organisms play a pivotal role in driving elemental cycling on Earth, a process essential for maintaining the habitability of the planet Earth.

The human microbiome plays a crucial role in human health.In the past decade,advances in high-throughput sequencing technologies and analytical software have significantly improved our knowledge of the human microbiome.However,most studies concerning the human microbiome did not provide repeatable protocols to guide the sample collection,handling,and processing procedures,which impedes obtaining valid and timely microbial taxonomic and functional results.This protocol provides detailed operation methods of human microbial sample collection,DNA extraction,and library construction for both the amplicon sequencing-based measurements of the microbial samples from the human nasal cavity,oral cavity,and skin,as well as the shotgun metagenomic sequencing-based measurements of the human stool samples among adult par-ticipants.This study intends to develop practical procedure standards to improve the reproducibility of microbiota profiling of human samples.

In this paper, we consider the embedding relations between any two a-modulation spaces. Based on an observation that the a-modulation space with smaller a can be regarded as a corresponding decomposition space associated with a-covering for larger a, we give a complete characterization of the Fourier multipliers between a-modulation spaces with different a. Then we establish a full version of optimal embedding relations between a-modulation spaces.
