Systematic review and meta-analysis: Comparing hepatocellular and cholestatic patterns of drug-induced liver injury

Background and aims:Drug-induced liver injury(DILI)is a leading cause of death from acute liver failure(ALF).Hy's law warns that a hepatocellular pattern of injury accompanied by jaundice and normal alkaline phosphatase(ALP)levels is associated with a 10%or greater chance of progression to transplant or liver-related death.This meta-analysis of DILI studies evaluates acute and chronic outcomes of DILI according to clinical pattern of injury.Methods:We conducted a systematic search using electronic databases PubMed and EMBASE through to 8 March 2022.Our primary outcome was to compare acute outcomes including ALF,liver-related death,and liver transplant between patients experiencing hepatocellular,cholestatic,and mixed patterns of DILI.Our secondary outcome was to compare the rate of DILI chronicity between patients of these three differing patterns of injury.Pooled odds ratios(ORs)and 95%confidence intervals(CIs)were calculated using a random-effects model.Results:Overall,12 studies comprising 4290 patients were included.Patients with cholestatic DILI demonstrated similar rates of ALF(OR:0.80,95%CI:0.46–1.40,p=0.429)and liver-related death(OR:0.92,95%CI:0.50–1.69,p=0.792)compared to patients with hepatocellular DILI.Patients with cholestatic DILI were significantly more likely to experience chronicity compared to patients with hepatocellular DILI(OR:2.53,95%CI:1.34–4.79,p=0.004).

Oxidation of Mn (Ⅱ) or As(Ⅲ) by molecular oxygen is slow at pH<9,while they can be catalytically oxidized in the presence of oxide minerals and then removed from contaminated water.However,the reaction mechanisms on simultaneous oxidation of Mn(Ⅱ) and As (Ⅲ)on oxide mineral surface and their accompanied removal efficiency remain unclear.This study compared Mn (Ⅱ) oxidation on four common metal oxides (γ-Al_(2)O_(3),CuO,α-Fe2O_(3)and ZnO) and investigated the simultaneous oxidation and removal of Mn (Ⅱ) and As (Ⅲ) through batch experiments and spectroscopic analyses.Among the tested oxides,CuO and α-Fe2O_(3)possess greater catalytic activity toward Mn (Ⅱ) oxidation.Oxidation and removal kinetics of Mn (Ⅱ) and As (Ⅲ) on CuO indicate that O_(2)is the terminal electron acceptor for Mn (Ⅱ) and As (Ⅲ) oxidation on CuO,and Mn (Ⅱ) acts as an electron shuttle to promote As (Ⅲ) oxidation and removal.The main oxidized product of Mn (Ⅱ) on CuO is high-valent MnO_(x)species.This newly formed Mn (Ⅲ) or Mn (IV) phases promote As (Ⅲ) oxidation on CuO at circumneutral pH 8 and is reduced to Mn (Ⅱ),which may be then released into solution.This study provides new insights into metal oxide-catalyzed oxidation of pollutants Mn (Ⅱ) and As (Ⅲ) and suggests that CuO should be considered as an efficient material to remediate Mn (Ⅱ) and As(Ⅲ)contamination.

Natural exosome-like nanovesicles from edible tea flowers suppress metastatic breast cancer via ROS generation and microbiota modulation

Although several artificial nanotherapeutics have been approved for practical treatment of metastatic breast cancer,their inefficient therapeutic outcomes,serious adverse effects,and high cost of mass production remain crucial challenges.Herein,we developed an alternative strategy to specifically trigger apoptosis of breast tumors and inhibit their lung metastasis by using natural nanovehicles from tea flowers(TFENs).These nanovehicles had desirable particle sizes(131 nm),exosome-like morphology,and negative zeta potentials.Furthermore,TFENs were found to contain large amounts of polyphenols,flavonoids,functional proteins,and lipids.Cell experiments revealed that TFENs showed strong cytotoxicities against cancer cells due to the stimulation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)amplification.The increased intracellular ROS amounts could not only trigger mitochondrial damage,but also arrest cell cycle,resulting in the in vitro anti-proliferation,anti-migration,and anti-invasion activities against breast cancer cells.Further mice investigations demonstrated that TFENs after intravenous(i.v.)injection or oral administration could accumulate in breast tumors and lung metastatic sites,inhibit the growth and metastasis of breast cancer,and modulate gut microbiota.This study brings new insights to the green production of natural exosome-like nanoplatform for the inhibition of breast cancer and its lung metastasis via i.***.and oral routes.

Along with the unceasing growth of worldwide economic and the associated issues on resources,energy and environment,clean energy generating technologies that are based on recyclable materials,if possible,may become the future trend of development.Here,we report the design of a cheap,lightweight,and recyclable single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator(TENG)that utilizes waste paper as the triboelectric material.Under the current strategy,we successfully developed green energy machines without vastly increasing the mining of various critical minerals around the world.The as-designed TENG could not only collect and convert mechanical energy into electricity with sound efficiency,but also has the merit for continuous reuse and quick construction.The maximum output power density is as high as 171 mW·m^(-2) at a resistance of 130 MQ and could be integrated into a book for monitoring reading actions,thus providing a new approach to the low-cost,green and sustainable self-powered electronic systems.

Dietary resistant starch ameliorating lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in meat ducks associated with the alteration in gut microbiome and glucagon-like peptide 1 signaling

Background:Consumption of resistant starch(RS)has been associated with various intestinal and systemic health benefits,but knowledge of its effects on intestinal health and inflammatory response in stressed birds is limited.Here,we examined how dietary RS supplementation from 12%raw potato starch(RPS)modulated inflammatory severity induced by lipopolysaccharide(LPS)in meat ducks.Results:LPS administration at 14,16,and 18 d(chronic challenge)decreased body weight(BW)and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor(GLP-1R)level with higher intestinal permeability and inflammation,evident by higher proinflammatory cytokine levels.Dietary 12%RPS supplementation enhanced Claudin-1 and GLP-1R expression,along with lower levels of inflammatory factors in both ileum and serum.Microbiome analysis showed that RS treatment shifted microbial structure reflected by enriched the proportion of Firmicutes,Bifidobacterium,Ruminococcus,etc.Dietary RS addition also significantly increased the concentrations of propionate and butyrate during chronic LPS challenge.Furthermore,response to acute challenge,the ducks received 2 mg/kg BW LPS at 14 d had higher concentrations of serum endotoxins and inflammatory cytokines,as well as upregulated transcription of toll like receptor 4(TLR4)in ileum when compared to control birds.Analogous to GLP-1 agonist liraglutide,dietary RS addition decreased endotoxins and inflammation cytokines,whereas it upregulated the GLP-1 synthesis related genes expression.Meanwhile,dietary RS supplementation suppressed the acute LPS challenge-induced TLR4 transcription.Conclusions:These data suggest that dietary 12%RPS supplementation could attenuate the LPS-induced inflammation as well as intestinal injury of meat ducks,which might involve in the alteration in gut microbiota,SCFAs production and the signaling pathways of TLR4 and GLP-1/GLP-1R.

Developing chemical signatures of particulate air pollution in the Pearl River Delta region, China

PM 2.5 samples were collected in a regional sampling network with three sites in Hong Kong and four sites in the adjacent inland Pearl River Delta （PRD） or Guangdong Province during four months/seasons from 2002–2003. Trans-boundary transport between Hong Kong and the inland PRD is inevitable under the influence of Asian monsoon. In summer, Hong Kong serves as the upwind site of the inland PRD while during other seasons it is under the influence of continental emissions. Previous studies have recognized the importance of using chemical signatures to differentiate local vs. regional contributions to air pollutants in Hong Kong such as the CO/NOx ratio, ratios of different VOC species. In this study, detailed chemical speciation by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was performed with PM 2.5 samples to identify new chemical signatures to distinguish aerosols in Hong Kong from those from the inland PRD. Since Hong Kong is not influenced by the continental emissions from the inland PRD during summer, comparison focused on chemical data obtained from this season for chemical signatures. The new ratios developed from the current study include LCPI/HCPI ratio of alkanes （0.39 ± 0.02 in Hong Kong vs. 0.78 ± 0.08 in the inland PRD）, pyrene to benzo[ghi]perylene ratio （0.97 ± 0.21 in Hong Kong compared to 0.20 ± 0.06 in the inland PRD）, and the ratio of 1,2-benzenedioic acid to 1,4-benzenedioic acid （1.8 ± 0.1 in Hong Kong vs. 0.6 ± 0.05 in the inland PRD）. Results from this study also revealed that Hong Kong was impacted by ship emissions as reflected by substantially high V/Ni ratio （9 ± 2） while this ratio was about 1–2 at all sites in the inland PRD, which is very close to typical ratios from residual oil combustion.

BIAXIAL LOADING OF NEO-CLASSICAL LIQUID CRYSTAL ELASTOMERS:CONSTITUTIVE RELATIONS AND SOFT BEHAVIOR

The thermo-order-mechanical behaviors of liquid crystal elastomers （LCEs） under biaxial loading are studied in this paper. Inverse method for nonlinear elastic problems is utilized by imposing biaxial stretching to thin rectangular samples. Neo-classical elastic energy is used together with the Landau-de Gennes nematic free energy. Under plane stress assumptions, the constitutive equations are derived. Due to the possible reorientations of the liquid crystal molecules induced by the imposed biaxial loading, the in-plane nonlinear stress-strain relations can have different expressions depending on which loading axis will have the largest effective principal strain. And the free energy is a multi-well non-convex potential function. As shown by some typical loading paths, the LCE samples will exhibit an anisotropic nonlinear elastic behavior, as long as the loading has not induced a reorientation of the liquid crystal molecules. When this did occur, jumps of stresses could take place for dead loadings due to the losing of stability.

Solutions of the Generalized Lennard-Jones System

In this paper, we study solution structures of the following generalized Lennard-Jones system in R^n,x（-α/｜x｜α＋2＋β/｜x｜β＋2）xwith 0 〈 α 〈β. Considering periodic solutions with zero angular momentum, we prove that the corre- sponding problem degenerates to I-dimensional and possesses infinitely many periodic solutions which must be oscillating line solutions or constant solutions. Considering solutions with non-zero angular momentum, we compute Morse indices of the circular solutions first, and then apply the mountain pass theorem to show the existence of non-circular solutions with non-zero topological degrees. We further prove that besides circular solutions the system possesses in fact countably many periodic solutions with arbitrarily large topological degree, infinitely many quasi-periodic solutions, and infinitely many asymptotic solutions.

Water-soluble boron carbon oxynitride dots with excellent solid-state fluorescence and ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence

Developing metal-free and long lifetime room-temperature phosphorescence(RTP)materials has received tremendous interest due to their numerous potential applications,of which stable triplet-excited state is the core challenge.Here,boron carbon oxynitride(BCNO)dots,emitting stable blue fluorescence and green RTP,are reported for the first time.The obtained BCNO dots exhibit an unexpected ultralong RTP lifetime of 1.57 s,lasting over 8 s to naked eyes.The effective doping of carbon and oxygen elements in boron nitride(BN)actually provides a small energy gap between singlet and triplet states,facilitating the intersystem crossing(ISC)and populating of triplet excitons.The formation of compact cores via crystallization and effective inter-/intra-dot hydrogen bonds further stabilizes the excited triplet states and reduces quenching of RTP by oxygen at room temperature.Based on the water-soluble feature of BCNO dots,a novel advanced security ink is developed toward anti-counterfeiting tag and confidential information encryption.This study extends BCNO dots to rarely exploited phosphorescence fields and also provides a facile strategy to prepare ultralong lifetime metal-free RTP materials.
