Poly(lactic acid)(PLA)composite films reinforced with microcrystalline cellulose(MCC)extracted from pineapple leaf fibers(PALF)were prepared by a solution casting *** an attempt to improve the interaction between PLA and cellulose,two approaches were adopted;first,poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG)was used as a surfactant,and second,the cellulosic fibers were pre-treated using tert-butanol(TBA).Lignocellulosic and cellulosic substrates were characterized using Fourier transform infrared(FTIR),wide-angle X-ray scattering(WAXS),and thermogravimetrical analysis(TGA).MCC from PALF showed good thermal stability,left few residues after decomposing,and exhibited high crystallinity ***,thermal and thermomechanical properties of the PLA composites were also *** PLA endotherms were observed in composites with TBA-treated MCC due to crystal nucleation *** ultimate tensile strain values for all composites were lower than that of the pristine ***,4 wt.%MCC content provided balanced engineering properties in terms of static and dynamic tensile properties.

Cellulose,microcrystalline cellulose and nanocellulose were prepared from three agricultural waste resources:pineapple leaf(PALF),banana rachis(BR),and sugarcane bagasse(SCB).Each waste resource was first converted into microcrystalline cellulose which was subsequently converted into cellulose nanoparticles by using mild(30%w/v)and strong(60%w/v)sulfuric acid concentrations for *** transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)were used to characterize each waste resource and extracted cellulosic ***,nanocelluloses were studied by zeta potential,size analysis,and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).Cellulose nanowhiskers were successfully obtained and isolated with a 33%average yield by applying a mild acid *** BR and SCB proved to be more promising agricultural waste resources in terms of their crystalline cellulosic content and properties.

Teaching Hebrew Classics： Test Case— Agnon＇s Story ＂From a Foe to a Friend＂

Teaching literary classics has always been a burden for the teacher; since the language is archaic, and neither the themenor structure appeal to the students, because they are not trivial and do not deal with their immediate problems like puberty or relationships with parents. Nevertheless, it is essential that students will be exposed to the treasures of their culture. The author proposes that we introduce the classics through their literary adaptations into children＇s book, comics, and so on. Adaptation as well as translation involves interpretation. Therefore, through the adaptation, we show the students that classic texts are complicated and potent of many meanings. As an introduction to the works of S. Y. Agnon, the author chose his story ＂From a Foe to a Friend＂（1992）. ＂From a Foe to a Friend＂ by S. Y. Agnon, is considered to be simple, na＇fve story, the plot is linear and accumulative, almost like a folktale or a children＇s story. And indeed, this story was published （2008） as a children＇s book with illustrations, and also as a comic book （2012）. The author will show how we can use these books, along with the folktale of＂The Three Little Pigs＂（1890）, which the story＇s plot is based on, to prepare students to the challenge of Agnon＇s literary work. The conceptual framework of this paper is based on Polysystem Theory （Even-Zohar, 1990）, Translation Theory （Toury, 1995）, and adaptation as an interpretation （Shenberg, 1997, 1998）.

Tributaries are one of the most important factors contributing to variability in the downstream evolution of bed sediment grain *** primary aim of this work is to evaluate the response of the bed sediment texture in the recipient channel induced by ten tributaries of the?ernáOstravice stream and find reach-scale and catchment-scale parameters that would be able to predict this *** research was based on collecting information on the grain size distributions at sites adjacent to confluence zones.A significant change in sediment texture occurred in the vicinity of five *** the other factors contributing to grain size variability(e.g.,local channel geometry,lithology,and lateral sediment sources),it was assumed that only four of them were associated with a sufficient bedload influx to alter the sediment calibre below the ***,a significant morphological effect in the form of a large confluence bar was observed in one *** tributaries had several common features:(i)they had a larger relative catchment area than that of nonsignificant tributaries;(ii)they were characterized by different bed grain sizes,with some exceptions;and(iii)they had a higher unit stream power close to the confluence in relation to that of the *** characteristics were represented by the proposed relative parameters,including the relative unit stream power and bed material texture,which allowed the best classification of significant and nonsignificant *** their simplified form,the parameters described the transport capacity and grain size distribution,which were generally considered to be primary factors responsible for a redefinition of the sediment texture in the recipient ***,it should be noted that these results are subject to some degree of uncertainty due to the relatively small sample size of only 10 tributaries.

Efficacy of Ciji Hua'ai Baosheng formula on the expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor,kinase insert domain-containing receptor and basic fibroblast growth factor in mouse models of H22 hepatocellular carcinoma

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of Ciji Hua'ai Baosheng formula(CHBF) on microvessel density(MVD) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF), kinase insert domain-containing receptor(KDR) and basic fibroblast growth factor(b FGF) expression in serum and tumor tissue of mice receiving chemotherapy for the treatment of H22 hepatocellular ***: Sixty Kunming mice were injected subcutaneously with H22 hepatoma carcinoma cell suspensions into the right anterior armpit. Seven days later, all transplanted tumor were formed and the mice were intraperitoneally injected 200 mg/kg cytoxan(CTX) to establish the models of tumor-bearing mouse chemotherapy, then they were randomly divided into model group, continuing CTX chemotherapy group(CTX group), and three CHBF(117, 58.5 and 29.25 g/kg) groups. After ten days of treatments, histology was observed, contents of VEGF, KDR and b FGF in serum and tumor tissue were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), VEGF and b FGF protein expression and MVD tagged by CD34 were detected by ***: MVD in CHBF(117, 58.5 g/kg) and CTX groups was significantly lower than that in model group(P < 0.01); expressions of VEGF, KDR and b FGF in serum and tumor tissue in CHBF(117 g/kg)group were less than those in model group(P <0.05; P < 0.01); the expressions of MVD, VEGF and b FGF in tumor tissue of CHBF(117 g/kg) groupwere also less than those in CTX group(P < 0.05;P < 0.01).CONCLUSION: CHBF can effectively reduce the expression of VEGF, KDR and b FGF in serum and tumor tissue, and decrease MVD and delay tumor progression.

Hepatocellular carcinoma and synchronous liver metastases from colorectal cancer in cirrhosis:A case report

A 68-year-old Caucasian man with hepatitis C virus- related cirrhosis was admitted to our Unit in February 2010 for a diagnostic evaluation of three centimetric hypoechoic focal liver lesions detected by regular sur- veillance ultrasound. The subsequent computer tomog- raphy(CT) led to a diagnosis of unifocal hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) in Ⅵ hepatic segment, defined the other two nodules in the Ⅵ and Ⅶ segment as sus- pected metastases, and showed a luminal narrowing with marked segmental circumferential thickening of the hepatic flexure of the colon. Colonoscopy detected an ulcerated, bleeding and stricturing lesion at the hepatic flexure, which was subsequently defined as ad- enocarcinoma with a moderate degree of differentiation at histological examination. Finally, ultrasound-guided liver biopsy of the three focal liver lesions confirmed the diagnosis of HCC for the nodule in the Ⅵ segment, and characterized the other two lesions as metastases from colorectal cancer. The patient underwent laparo- tomic right hemicolectomy with removal of thirty-nine regional lymph nodes(three of them tested positive for metastasis at histological examination), and simulta- neous laparotomic radio-frequency ablation of both nodule of HCC and metastases. The option of adju- vant chemotherapy was excluded because of the post- surgical onset of ascites. Abdomen CT and positron emission tomography/CT scans performed after 1, 6 and 12 mo highlighted a complete response to treat- ments without any radiotracer accumulation. After 18 mo, the patient died due to progressive liver failure. Our experience emphasizes the potential coexistence of two different neoplasms in a cirrhotic liver and the complexity in the proper diagnosis and management of the two tumours.

The present study was conducted within the CINDI program and covers 1,600 individuals, divided into four age groups. The aim of this study is to investigate the key biomedical and lifestyle factors for the development of type 2 diabetes as well as the cardiovascular diabetes complications in the population aged 25-64 from Kardzhali region, Bulgaria. The results of the study show the existence of behavioral and biological risk factors of health, as well as family history in the studied individuals who suffer from diabetes. The connection between diabetes and certain cardiovascular diseases such as ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular disease is confirmed. This requires the development and implementation of intervention activities among the population of Kardzhali, aimed at reducing the level of diabetes risk factors, early identification of risk groups and timely treatment of the diseased.

Oral Low-Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid in the Treatment of Atrophic Vaginitis

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of low molecular weight hyaluronic acid oral tablets for the treatment of atrophic vaginitis. 12 women with atrophic vaginitis were recruited for this double blind, placebo-controlled study. Patients were randomized to receive either low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA) oral tablets or placebo for three months. Vaginal biopsies were taken at baseline and after three months of treatment, and vaginal epithelium was analysed using light microscopy. The evaluation of symptoms was self-assessed by the patients. Biopsies from HA group showed an epithelium thicker than in placebo group. The lamina propria from the HA group also showed a denser appearance compared to placebo group. Morphometric analysis showed significant differences between HA and baseline in the number of epithelial layers and in the thickness. The evaluation of symptoms also showed an effective improvement in the patients treated with HA, compared to baseline and to placebo group. In conclusion, oral administration of HA tablets improved the vaginal epithelium, decreasing atrophy. This can be an ideal option for patients with atrophic vaginitis who do not want to or can not take estrogen and show low compliance toward vaginal administration.
