Osteoarthritis is a joint disease characterized by a poorly-defined inflammatory response that does not encompass a massive immune cell infiltration yet contributes to cartilage degradation and loss of joint mobility, suggesting a chondrocyte intrinsic inflammatory response. Using primary chondrocytes from joints of osteoarthritic mice and patients, we first show that these cells express ample pro-inflammatory markers and RANKL in an NF-κB dependent manner. The inflammatory phenotype of chondrocytes was recapitulated by exposure of chondrocytes to IL-1β and bone particles, which were used to model bone matrix breakdown products revealed to be present in synovial fluid of OA patients, albeit their role was not defined. We further show that bone particles and IL-1β can promote senescent and apoptotic changes in primary chondrocytes due to oxidative stress from various cellular sources such as the mitochondria. Finally, we provide evidence that inflammation, oxidative stress and senescence converge upon IκB-ζ, the principal mediator downstream of NF-κB, which regulates expression of RANKL, inflammatory, catabolic,and SASP genes. Overall, this work highlights the capacity and mechanisms by which inflammatory cues, primarily joint degradation products, i.e., bone matrix particles in concert with IL-1β in the joint microenvironment, program chondrocytes into an “inflammatory phenotype” which inflects local tissue damage.

Mise en abyme, according to Gregory Minissale's definition, is "a process of representation within representation". It is a narrative technique characterised by eternal extension of repetitive images. Under Paul Ricoeur's framework of narrative-metaphor analogy, mise en abyme can be regarded not as a blank intertextuality, but as an allegorical infinity structurally performed by textual arrangement. Following his discussion, it is important to explore the functions of allegory from the connection of text and reality to the integration of different elements of text, such as plots, rhetoric usage, ideas, personal characters, etc. As both narrative and the reality imitated by narrative are bound with time, the temporality of mise en abyme enables narrative to be more internally referable. This referability is significant to understand how narrative constitutes reader reception. Structured with this central idea, this paper examines Nietzsche's "eternal recurrence" mentioned in Milan Kundera's novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being and the Sisyphusian life mode in the enclosed communist countryside shown in Ah Cheng's novella "The King of Children".

This review provides an update on the epidemiology,pathophysiology,symptoms,diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine neoplasms(NENs)of the small bowel(SB).These NENs are defined as a group of neoplasms deriving from neuroendocrine *** are currently the most common primary tumors of the SB,mainly involving the ileum,making the SB the most frequently affected part of the gastrointestinal *** NENs by definition are located between the ligament of Treitz and the ileocecal *** are characterized by small size and induce an extensive fibrotic reaction in the small intestine including the mesentery,resulting in narrowing or twisting of the *** manifestations of bowel functionality are related to the precise location of the primary *** majority of them are non-functional NENs and generally asymptomatic;in an advanced stage,NENs present symptoms of mass effect by non-specific abdominal pain or carcinoid syndrome which appears in patients with liver metastasis(around 10%).The main manifestations of the carcinoid syndrome are facial flushing(94%),diarrhea(78%),abdominal cramps(50%),heart valve disease(50%),telangiectasia(25%),wheezing(15%)and edema(19%).Diagnosis is made by imaging or biochemical tests,and the order of request will depend on the initial diagnostic hypothesis,while confirmation will always be *** patients with a localized SB NEN with or without near metastasis in the mesentery are recommended for curative *** and distant spread may be susceptible to several therapeutic strategies,such as chemotherapy,somatostatin analogs and palliative resection.

The increasing use of lithium-ion cells in large-scale,long-term applications drives a need for design methods that considers aging and accurate state of health estimation.A common approach is to rely on an empirical or semiempirical aging model fit to experimental data to estimate the evolution of capacity and power *** aging data are costly to collect,pack designers either use Design of Experiment(DOE)techniques to define a set of efficient tests,or use existing aging data to calibrate aging *** the increasing quantity of available aging data,the question arises:how can experimental aging campaigns be quickly compared?However,a methodology for the comparison of sets of aging experiments is not discussed in the *** a result,pack designers usually rely on intuition to select between multiple aging studies proposed by DOE techniques or in the *** work proposes metrics to quantitatively capture the alignment between a set of aging experiments and a target *** metrics allow pack designers to quickly compare many sets of aging experiments to evaluate those which have tested conditions relevant to the *** studies are presented to illustrate the application of these metrics using aging campaign data from the *** validate these metrics,this work examines the relationship between these metric values and aging model validation error for calendar aging data for 18650 NMC battery *** is demonstrated that greater metric values correspond to reduced model error for an empirical capacity fade model.

We consider a non-standard mixed method for the Stokes problem in Rn,n∈{2,3},with Dirichlet boundary conditions,in which,after using the incompressibility condition to eliminate the pressure,the pseudostress tensor s and the velocity vector u become the only ***,we apply the Babuˇska-Brezzi theory to prove the well-posedness of the corresponding continuous and discrete *** particular,we show that Raviart-Thomas elements of order k≥0 for s and piecewise polynomials of degree k for u ensure unique solvability and stability of the associated Galerkin *** addition,we introduce and analyze an augmented approach for our pseudostress-velocity *** methodology employed is based on the introduction of the Galerkin least-squares type terms arising from the constitutive and equilibrium equations,and the Dirichlet boundary condition for the velocity,all of them multiplied by suitable stabilization *** show that these parameters can be chosen so that the resulting augmented variational formulation is defined by a strongly coercive bilinear form,whence the associated Galerkin scheme becomes well posed for any choice of finite element *** instance,Raviart-Thomas elements of order k≥0 for s and continuous piecewise polynomials of degree k+1 for u become a feasible choice in this ***,extensive numerical experiments illustrating the good performance of the methods and comparing them with other procedures available in the literature,are provided.

Fingerlings of African catfish,Clarias gariepinus [mean total length,(7.0±1.0) cm SD;mean weight,(3.0±0.7) g SD] were exposed to acute concentrations of amine salt of 2,4-D(0,50,200,250,350,and 400 mg/L) to determine the behavioural responses and *** raised in aquaria the fish became *** beat frequencies(opercular and tail beat frequency per minute,OBF and TBF) of the exposed fish declined with increase in the exposure duration and concentration,but the reverse was the case with percent *** variables signifi cantly differed at both the exposure duration and concentration of the toxicant(P<0.05).Anova of the linear regression between variables-OBF,TBF and mortality on exposure duration indicated a strong positive relationship(P<0.001) with the entire variables except mortality and exposure *** and TBF were inversely correlated with exposure duration(r=-0.99;P<0.05).The 96 h lethal concentration was 165.36(133.29～190.51,C.L.) mg/L and the median lethal time at the highest concentration was 20.41(11.87～27.46) *** results from this study revealed that 2,4-D was very toxic to *** under laboratory conditions and its application should therefore,be restricted in the field.

Quality assurance in surgery has been one of the most important topics of debate among colorectal surgeons in the past *** has produced new surgical standards that led in part to the impressive oncological outcomes we see in many units *** mesorectal excision,complete mesocolic excision(CME),and the Japanese D3 lymphadenectomy are now benchmark techniques embraced by many surgeons and widely recommended by surgical ***,there are still ongoing discrepancies in outcomes largely based on surgeon *** is one of the main reasons why many countries have shifted colorectal cancer surgery only to high volume *** markers of surgical quality is thus a perquisite to ensure that standards and oncological outcomes are met at an institutional *** the evolution of CME surgery,various quality markers have been described,mostly based on measurements on the surgical specimen and lymph node yield,while others have proposed radiological markers(*** stumps)measured on postoperative scans as part of the routine cancer *** is no ideal marker;however,taken together and assembled into a new score or set of criteria may become a future point of reference for reporting outcomes of colorectal cancer surgery in research studies and defining subspecialization requirements both at an individual and hospital level.
