Fatty liver disease:Disparate predictive ability for cardiometabolic risk and all-cause mortality

AIM: To assess the association of a surrogate of fatty liver disease(FLD) with incident type-2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and all-cause ***: In a prospective population-based study on 1822 middle-aged adults, stratified to gender, we used an algorithm of fatty liver index(FLI) to identify associations with outcomes. An index ≥ 60 indicated the presence of FLD. In Cox regression models, adjusted for age, smoking status, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure, we assessed the predictive value of FLI for incident diabetes, coronary heart disease(CHD), and all-cause ***: At a mean 8 year follow-up, 218 and 285 incident cases of diabetes and CHD, respectively, and 193 deaths were recorded. FLD was significantly associated in each gender with blood pressure, total cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, uric acid, and C-reactive protein; weakly with fasting glucose; and inversely with high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and sex hormonebinding globulin. In adjusted Cox models, FLD was(with a 5-fold HR) the major determinant of diabetes development. Analyses further disclosed significant independent prediction of CHD by FLD in combined gender [hazard ratio(HR) = 1.72, 95% confidence interval(CI): 1.17-2.53] and men(HR = 2.35, 95%CI: 1.25-4.43). Similarly-adjusted models for all-cause mortality proved, however, not to confer risk, except for a tendency in prediabetics and diabetic ***: A surrogate of FLD conferred significant high risk of diabetes and coronary heart disease, independent of some metabolic syndrome traits. Allcause mortality was not associated with FLD, except likely in the prediabetic state. Such a FLI may reliably be used in epidemiologic studies.

We calculate the energy eigenvalues and the sate functions of one-electron Quantum Dot （QD） by using a combination of Quantum genetic Algorithm （QgA） and Hartre-Fock-Roothaan （HFR） method. The linear and the third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients for the 1s-1p, 1p-1d, and 1d-1f transitions are examined as a function of the incident photon energy for three different values of the stoichiometric ratio. The results show that the stoichiometric ratio, impurity, relaxation time, and dot size have great influence on the optical absorption coefficients of QDs.

Prescribed fire is a common economical and effective forestry practice, and therefore it is important to understand the effects of fire on soil properties for better soil management. We investigated the impacts of low-intensity prescribed fire on the microbial and chemical properties of the top soil in a Hungarian oak(Quercus frainetto Ten.) forest. The research focused on microbial soil parameters(microbial soil respiration(RSM), soil microbial biomass carbon(Cmic) and metabolic quotient(qCO2) and chemical topsoil properties(soil acidity(pH),electrical conductivity(EC), carbon(C), nitrogen(N), C/N ratio and exchangeable cations). Mean annual comparisons show significant differences in four parameters(C/N ratio,soil pH, Cmic and qCO2) while monthly comparisons do not reveal any significant differences. Soil pH increased slightly in the burned plots and had a significantly positive correlation with exchangeable cations Mg, Ca, Mn and *** mean annual C/N ratio was significantly higher in the burned plots(28.5:1) than in the control plots(27.0:1). The mean annual Cmic(0.6 mg g-1) was significantly lower although qCO2(2.5 lg CO2–C mg Cmic h-1) was significantly higher, likely resulting from the microbial response to fire-induced environmental stress. Low-intensity prescribed fire caused very short-lived changes. The annual mean values of C/N ratio, pH, Cmic and qCO2showed significant differences.

AIM： To compare three initial monthly intravitreal ranibizumab（IVR） injections followed by pro re nata（PRN） dosing with one initial monthly IVR injections followed by PRN dosing for macular edema（ME） secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion（BRVO）.METHODS： Forty-two eyes of 42 patients who had IVR injections for BRVO were retrospectively studied. Eighteen eyes received 1 initial IVR injection（1＋PRN group） and 24 eyes received 3 monthly IVR injections（3＋PRN）. At 1, 3, 6 and 12mo; spectral-domain optical coherence tomography（SD-OCT） was performed. Central macular thickness（CMT）, the integrity of the external limiting membrane（ELM）, the presence of subretinal fluid, cyst size, the presence of inner segment/outer segment（IS/OS） defect were ***： At baseline the mean CMT was 521.3±153.2 μm in the 3＋PRN group while it was 438.1±162.4 μm in 1＋PRN group. At the final visit, mean CMT was 278.3±87.8 μm in the 3＋PRN group and 285.2±74.2 μm in the 1＋PRN group（P=0.079）. The changes in CMT over the entire study period were also comparable in both groups（243±160 μm in the 3＋PRN group, and 152.9±175.3 μm in the 1＋PRN group; P=0.090）. At baseline, best-corrected visual acuity（BCVA） was 0.92±0.60 logarithm of the minimal angle of resolution（logMAR） in the 3＋PRN group, while it was 0.72±0.46 logMAR in the 1＋PRN group. Final BCVA was 0.42±0.55 logMAR in the 3＋PRN group and 0.38±0.50 logMAR in the 1＋PRN group（P=0.979）. Additionally, the BCVA changes from baseline to final visit were not significantly different（-0.50±0.45 logMAR in the 3＋PRN group, and-0.33±0.39 logMAR in the 1＋PRN group; P=0.255）.CONCLUSION： No significant differences in the anatomical or functional results are found between 3＋PRN and 1＋PRN regimens in the patients receiving ranibizumab for ME secondary to BRVO. Intact IS/OS and baseline BCVA are good predictor of the visual gain, while baseline CMT is a good predictor of the anatomical gain.

AIM: To determine whether Nigella sativa prevents hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury to the liver. METHODS: Thirty rats were divided into three groups as sham (group 1), control (group 2), and Nigella sati-va (NS) treatment group (group 3). All rats underwent hepatic ischemia for 45 min followed by 60 min period of reperfusion. Rats were intraperitoneally infused with only 0.9% saline solution in group 2. Rats in group 3 received NS (0.2 mL/kg) intraperitoneally, before isch-emia and before reperfusion. Blood samples and liver tissues were harvested from the rats, and then the rats were sacrifi ced. Serum aspartate aminotransfera-se (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were determined. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), catalase (CAT), total oxida-tive status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and my-eloperoxidase (MPO) in hepatic tissue were measured. Also liver tissue histopathology was evaluated by light microscopy. RESULTS: The levels of liver enzymes in group 3 weresignifi cantly lower than those in the group 2. TAC in liver tissue was significantly higher in group 3 than in group 2. TOS, OSI and MPO in hepatic tissue were signifi cantly lower in group 3 than the group 2. Histo-logical tissue damage was milder in the NS treatment group than that in the control group. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that Nigella sa-tiva treatment protects the rat liver against to hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury.
