Tourist preferences for agricultural landscapes:a case study of terraced paddy fields in Noto Peninsula,Japan

Many agricultural landscapes have been formed through the interaction and co-evolution of nature and people, and represent the living landscapes shaped over time through intensive and continuous human cultivation. Terraced paddy fields are being re-evaluated to take into account the multiple functions they fill beyond only rice cultivation, particularly their contribution to the national biodiversity strategy of Japan. Since the 1990 s, terraced paddy fields have been considered a representative cultural landscape of Japan and, at the same time, multi-stakeholder conservation activities have been conducted throughout Japan to reverse the increasing abandonment of terraces. Shiroyone Senmaida is an outstanding cultural landscape and a major tourist attraction in Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, which was designated through an initiative by the Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems(GIAHS) pilot site in 2011. It is important to clarify tourist preference for terraced paddy field landscapes to contribute to future policy making toward improved agricultural landscape conservation. A key finding of this study is that tourists visiting toenjoy the agricultural landscape are also concerned on the sustainability of the farming methods and preferred to maintain the naturalness of the landscape. Respondents with higher educational levels and greater concern for the biological and traditional farming knowledge aspects of the rice terraces were also more inclined to favor sustainable farming practices. Tourists preferred to maintain the naturalness and rurality of the agricultural landscape, and indicated that construction of excessive tourist facilities would cause the landscape to deteriorate. It was suggested that the local community and surroundings, including rural settlements, hills, and forests, should also be conserved together with the scenic terrace.

NUMERICAL IMPLEMENTATION FOR A 2-D THERMAL INHOMOGENEITY THROUGH THE DYNAMICAL PROBE METHOD

In this paper, we present the theory and numerical implementation for a 2-D thermal inhomogeneity through the dynamical probe method. The main idea of the dynamical probe method is to construct an indicator function associated with some probe such that when the probe touch the boundary of the inclusion the indicator function will blow up. From this property, we can get the shape of the inclusion. We will give the numerical reconstruction algorithm to identify the inclusion from the simulated Neumann-to-Dirichlet map.

We prove two new regularity criteria for the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain. Our results also hold for the 3D Boussinesq system with zero heat conductivity.

Generalized Morrey spaces and trace operator

The theory of generalized Besov-Morrey spaces and generalized Triebel-Lizorkin-Morrey spaces is developed. Generalized Morrey spaces, which Mizuhara and Nakai proposed, are equipped with a parameter and a function. The trace property is one of the main focuses of the present paper, which will clarify the role of the parameter of generalized Morrey spaces. The quarkonial decomposition is obtained as an application of the atomic decomposition. In the end, the relation between the function spaces dealt in the present paper and the foregoing researches is discussed.

Myeloid immunosuppression and immune checkpoints in the tumor microenvironment

Phylobone: a comprehensive database of bone extracellular matrix proteins in human and model organisms

The bone extracellular matrix(ECM) contains minerals deposited on highly crosslinked collagen fibrils and hundreds of noncollagenous proteins. Some of these proteins are key to the regulation of bone formation and regeneration via signaling pathways,and play important regulatory and structural roles. However, the complete list of bone extracellular matrix proteins, their roles, and the extent of individual and cross-species variations have not been fully captured in both humans and model organisms. Here, we introduce the most comprehensive resource of bone extracellular matrix(ECM) proteins that can be used in research fields such as bone regeneration, osteoporosis, and mechanobiology. The Phylobone database(available at https://***) includes 255proteins potentially expressed in the bone extracellular matrix(ECM) of humans and 30 species of vertebrates. A bioinformatics pipeline was used to identify the evolutionary relationships of bone ECM proteins. The analysis facilitated the identification of potential model organisms to study the molecular mechanisms of bone regeneration. A network analysis showed high connectivity of bone ECM proteins. A total of 214 functional protein domains were identified, including collagen and the domains involved in bone formation and resorption. Information from public drug repositories was used to identify potential repurposing of existing drugs. The Phylobone database provides a platform to study bone regeneration and osteoporosis in light of(biological) evolution,and will substantially contribute to the identification of molecular mechanisms and drug targets.

Neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging:a promising technique for depicting tissue characteristics containing neuromelanin

Idiopathic Parkinson＇s disease （IPD） is a progressive, neurodegenerative movement disorder characterized by bradykinesia, muscular rigidity, pos- tural instability and tremor. IPD is usually diagnosed based on clinical findings, but diagnoses are only 75-90% accurate when compared with autopsy results. Improving diagnostic accuracy is critical for the early dif- ferentiation of IPD from other Parkinsonism-related disorders because of differences in their prognoses and treatment. Furthermore, IPD is clinically heterogeneous, with variable prognosis. Although the biological function of neuromelanin has not yet been determined, the selective vulnerability of neuromelanin-containing neurons in patients with IPD suggests a role for this pigment in neurodegeneration. Recently developed ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging （MRI） systems produce Tl-weighted neuro- melanin-sensitive images with very high spatial resolution, enabling the de- piction of tissue containing neuromelanin. Here we review recent advances in neuromelanin-sensitive MRI in IPD and related conditions suggesting that neuromelanin may be a potential diagnostic biomarker for IPD.

Cobalt-based magnetic Weyl semimetals with high-thermodynamic stabilities

Recent experiments identified Co_(3)Sn_(2)S_(2) as the first magnetic Weyl semimetal(MWSM).Using first-principles calculation with a global optimization approach,we explore the structural stabilities and topological electronic properties of cobalt(Co)-based shandite and alloys,Co_(3)MM’X_(2)(M/M’=Ge,Sn,Pb,X=S,Se,Te),and identify stable structures with different Weyl *** a tight-binding model,for the first time,we reveal that the physical origin of the nodal lines of a Co-based shandite structure is the interlayer coupling between Co atoms in different Kagome layers,while the number of Weyl points and their types are mainly governed by the interaction between Co and the metal atoms,Sn,Ge,and *** Co_(3)SnPbS_(2) alloy exhibits two distinguished topological phases,depending on the relative positions of the Sn and Pb atoms:a three-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall metal,and a MWSM phase with anomalous Hall conductivity(~1290Ω^(−1) cm^(−1))that is larger than that of Co_(2)Sn_(2)S_(2).Our work reveals the physical mechanism of the origination of Weyl fermions in Co-based shandite structures and proposes topological quantum states with high thermal stability.

Blood glucose control in patients with severe sepsis and septic shock

The main pathophysiological feature of sepsis is the uncontrollable activation of both pro-and anti-inflammatory responses arising from the overwhelming pro-duction of mediators such as pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Such an uncontrollable inflammatory response would cause many kinds of metabolic derangements. One such metabolic derangement is hyperglycemia. Accordingly, control of hyperglycemia in sepsis is considered to be a very effective therapeutic approach. However, despite the initial enthusiasm, recent studies reported that tight glycemic control with intensive insulin therapy failed to show a beneficial effect on mortality of patients with severe sepsis and septic shock. One of the main reasons for this disappointing result is the incidence of harmful hypoglycemia during intensive insulin therapy. Therefore, avoidance of hypoglycemia during intensive insulin therapy may be a key issue in effective tight glycemic control. It is generally accepted that glycemic control aimed at a blood glucose level of 80-100 mg/dL, as initially proposed by van den Berghe, seems to be too tight and that such a level of tight glycemic control puts septic patients at increased risk of hypoglycemia. Therefore, now many researchers suggest less strict glycemic control with a target blood glucose level of 140-180 mg/dL. Also specific targeting of glycemic control in diabetic patients should be considered. Since there is a significantcorrelation between success rate of glycemic control and the degree of hypercytokinemia in septic patients, some countermeasures to hypercytokinemia may be an important aspect of successful glycemic control. Thus, in future, use of an artificial pancreas to avoid hypoglycemia during insulin therapy, special consideration of septic diabetic patients, and control of hypercytokinemia should be considered for more effective glycemic control in patients with severe sepsis and septic shock.
