Effects of Cu^(2+)and humic acids on degradation and fate of TBBPA in pure culture of Pseudomonas *** CDT

Soil contamination with tetrabromobisphenol A（TBBPA） has caused great concerns;however, the presence of heavy metals and soil organic matter on the biodegradation of TBBPA is still unclear. We isolated Pseudomonas sp. strain CDT, a TBBPA-degrading bacterium, from activated sludge and incubated it with ^（14）C-labeled TBBPA for 87 days in the absence and presence of Cu^（2＋）and humic acids（HA）. TBBPA was degraded to organic-solvent extractable（59.4% ± 2.2%） and non-extractable（25.1% ± 1.3%） metabolites,mineralized to CO_2（4.8% ± 0.8%）, and assimilated into cells（10.6% ± 0.9%） at the end of incubation. When Cu^（2＋）was present, the transformation of extractable metabolites into non-extractable metabolites and mineralization were inhibited, possibly due to the toxicity of Cu^（2＋）to cells. HA significantly inhibited both dissipation and mineralization of TBBPA and altered the fate of TBBPA in the culture by formation of HA-bound residues that amounted to 22.1% ± 3.7% of the transformed TBBPA. The inhibition from HA was attributed to adsorption of TBBPA and formation of bound residues with HA via reaction of reactive metabolites with HA molecules, which decreased bioavailability of TBBPA and metabolites in the culture. When Cu^（2＋）and HA were both present, Cu^（2＋）significantly promoted the HA inhibition on TBBPA dissipation but not on metabolite degradation. The results provide insights into individual and interactive effects of Cu^（2＋）and soil organic matter on the biotransformation of TBBPA and indicate that soil organic matter plays an essential role in determining the fate of organic pollutants in soil and mitigating heavy metal toxicity.

Cholesterol is a key molecule in the mammalian physiology of especial particular importance for the reproductive system as it is the common precursor for steroid hormone synthesis. Cholesterol is also a recognized modulator of sperm functions, not only at the level of gametogenesis. Cholesterol homeostasis regulation is crucial for posttesticular sperm maturation, and imbalanced cholesterol levels may particularly affect these posttesticular events. Metabolic lipid disorders （dyslipidemia） affect male fertility but are most of the time studied from the angle of endocrine/testicular consequences. This review will focus on the deleterious effects of a particular dyslipidemia, Le., hypercholesterolemia, on posttesticular maturation of mammalian spermatozoa.

Synthesis of zeolites using fly ash and their application in removing heavy metals from waters

Three types of zeolite (NaP1 zeolite, analcime and chabazite) were hydrothermally synthesized by reacting fly ash with NaOH solution. The maximum conversion rate from fly ash to single zeolite is about 40%—75%, and the total conversion rate 60%—80%. The synthesis experimental results indicate that factors including vortex, viscosity, temperature, reaction time, and NaOH concentration in the reaction system strongly affect the type and conversion rate of zeolites. The batch experiments of removing Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+ from wastewaters show that the adsorption capacity of zeolites synthesized is higher than that of fly ash.

High-Sensitivity Transcriptome Data Structure and Implications for Analysis and Biologic Interpretation

Novel microarray technologies such as the AB1700 platform from Applied Biosysterns promise significant increases in the signal dynamic range and a higher sensitivity for weakly expressed transcripts. We have compared a representative set of AB1700 data with a similarly representative Affymetrix HG-U133A dataset. The AB1700 design extends the signal dynamic detection range at the lower bound by one order of magnitude. The lognormal signal distribution profiles of these highsensitivity data need to be represented by two independent distributions. The additional second distribution covers those transcripts that would have gone undetected using the Affymetrix technology. The signal-dependent variance distribution in the AB1700 data is a non-trivial function of signal intensity, describable using a composite function. The drastically different structure of these highsensitivity transcriptome profiles requires adaptation or even redevelopment of the standard microarray analysis methods. Based on the statistical properties, we have derived a signal variance distribution model for AB1700 data that is necessary for such development. Interestingly, the dual lognormal distribution observed in the AB1700 data reflects two fundamentally different biologic mechanisms of transcription initiation.

Update on imaging of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome(PJS) is a rare, autosomal dominant disease linked to a mutation of the STK 11 gene and is characterized by the development of benign hamartomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal tract in association with a hyperpigmentation on the lips and oral mucosa. Patients affected by PJS have an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal and extra-digestive cancer. Malignancy most commonly occurs in the smallbowel. Extra-intestinal malignancies are mostly breast cancer and gynecological tumors or, to a lesser extent, pancreatic cancer. These polyps are also at risk of acute gastrointestinal bleeding, intussusception and bowel obstruction. Recent guidelines recommend regular smallbowel surveillance to reduce these risks associated with PJS. Small-bowel surveillance allows for the detection of large polyps and the further referral of selected PJS patients for endoscopic enteroscopy or surgery. Video capsule endoscopy, double balloon pushed enteroscopy,multidetector computed tomography and magnetic resonance enteroclysis or enterography, all of which are relatively new techniques, have an important role in the management of patients suffering from PJS. This review illustrates the pathological, clinical and imaging features of small-bowel abnormalities as well as the role and performance of the most recent imaging modalities for the detection and follow-up of PJS patients.

Coherent Streamline Generation for 2-D Vector Fields

Visualizing 2-D vector fields using streamlines is one popular flow visualization technique. Standard streamline generation algorithms compute the density of streamlines across the domain, detect features, and employ customized rules to emphasize features. In this process, feature characterization and visual clarity are heavily considered. Simultaneously preserving the temporal coherence for time-varying vector fields, however remains a challenge. In this paper, we present a coherent and feature-aware streamline generation algorithm by employing a feature-guided streamline seeding technique and a coherent streamline placing scheme. For each frame, a feature map is first computed with critical points or the Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponent （FTLE） approach, and is used to initialize a set of seeds by leveraging the Poisson Disk distribution. These seeds are further optimized by using a deformation-driven moving mesh method. To preserve the temporal coherence, the streamlines generated from the seeds are individually checked subject to their correspondences to the ones in the previous frame. Subsequently, additional streamlines are sequentially inserted in low-density regions. We demonstrate our algorithm on both Computation Fluid Dynamics （CFD） and non-CFD datasets, and compare it with the recent literature

Effect of Homogenizing Procedures on the Properties of Reaction Sialon Suspension

Homogeneous, high concentrated ceramic suspensions wi th low viscosity are the key controlling factors for the production of ceramic c omponents through colloidal processing. A well-dispersed suspension can be obta ined by choosing suitable dispersant, solvent, particle size distribution etc. B esides these factors, the homogenizing procedure is also a key step. In this paper, reaction sialon suspensions were prepared using 3-wt% KD1 as dis persant in organic media composed of 60-vol% methyletheylketone and 40-vol% et hanol. Different homogenizing procedures have been used and compared, including planetary milling, low energy ball milling and ultrasonic disaggregation. The ef fects of different homogenizing routes and mixing times on the rheology and stab ility of suspensions, and on the microstructure of slip casting green bodies, ha ve been studied. The varying dispersion efficiencies observed could be attribute d to differences in deagglomeration degrees achieved and in adsorption amount of dispersant onto the surface of reaction sialon powders.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt as bridge-to-surgery in refractory gastric antral vascular ectasia

Gastric antral vascular ectasia(GAVE) may cause gastrointestinal bleeding(GIB). The treatment of GAVE relies on endoscopic approaches such as electrocoagulation(argon plasma coagulation, laser therapy, heater probe therapy, radiofrequency ablation), cryotherapy, and band ligation. In refractory cases, antrectomy may be considered. In the event of an associated cirrhosis and portal hypertension, it has been suggested that antrectomy could be an option, provided the mortality risk isn't considered too great. We report the case of a 67-year-old cirrhotic patient who presented with GAVE related GIB, unresponsive to multiple endoscopic treatments. The patient had a good liver function(model for end-stage disease 10). After a multidisciplinary meeting, a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS) procedure was performed, in order to treat the cirrhosis associated ascites. The outcome was successful. An antrectomy was then performed, with no recurrence of GIB and no transfusion need during three months of follow up. In this case, the TIPS procedure achieved a complete ascites regression, allowing a safer surgical treatment of the GAVE-related GIB.
