Many lizard species use caudal autotomy to escape entrapment. Conspicuous coloration may increase the likelihood of b.ing attacked, b.t if that attack can b. directed towards the autotomous tail this may ultimately increase the chances of the lizard surviving a predatory attack. We tested the hypothesis that b.ightly-colored tails function to divert predatory attention away from the head and b.dy using pairs of b.ue-tailed and all-b.own clay model lizards. Predatory b.rd attacks on the 24 b.ue-tailed models occurred sooner （P = 0.001） than attacks on the 24 all-b.own models, and over 7 days b.ue-tailed models were attacked more often than all-b.own models （P = 0.007）. b.ue-tailed models were, however, more frequently attacked on the tail than other parts of the b.dy （P 〈 0.001）, while all-b.own models were more frequently attacked on the head and b.dy （P = 0.019） which would b. more likely to b. fatal for a real lizard. Our results suggest that models with a b.ue tail were more conspicuous than all-b.own models, attracting attacks sooner and more often, b.t that the attacks were predominantly directed at the tail. It is b.tter for individuals to b. attacked unsuccessfully many times, than successfully just once. Having a b.ightly-colored tail may, therefore, act as a ＇risky decoy＇. Despite increased conspicuousness, a b.ue tail increases the likelihood that the lizard would b. ab.e to effect escape through caudal autotomy rather than b.ing grab.ed b. the head or b.dy [Current Zoology 60 （3）： 333-337, 2014].

b.ckground:We hypothesized that supplementation of nursery and grower pig diets with coconut oil in the ab.ence of antib.otics would yield maintenance of glucose homeostasis,growth performance,and immune function similar to what is achieved with nursery and grower pig diets containing *** received the same b.se treatment diets from d24(weaning)to d71 of age and had b.ood and fecal samples collected on d24,d31,d45 and d71 for measurement of whole b.ood glucose,serum insulin,cortisol and cytokines,and fecal *** had weekly weights and daily feed consumption measured throughout the *** were euthanized at d71 and sub.utaneous fat and ileal contents were collected for assessment for fatty acids and microb.ome,*** treatments consisted of 2%soyb.an oil plus antib.otics(Ab.;n=22),2%soyb.an oil without antib.otics(NAb.;n=22),and 2%coconut oil without antib.otics(COC;n=22).Statistical analysis examined the effect of diet within each timepoint using a repeated measures ***:Pigs fed COC diet had decreased serum insulin levels,maintained feed intake,feed conversion and weight gain,and,b.sed on serum cytokines and fecal microb.ome,were immunologically similar to Ab.-fed ***,NAb.-fed pigs performed similarly to the Ab.-fed pigs in all parameters except for serum ***,there was no difference in the incidence of diarrhea b.tween any of the diet ***:This study demonstrates that dietary antib.otics are not necessary to maintain growth performance in nursery and grower ***,dietary antib.otics appear to modulate circulating cytokine *** coconut oil is neither harmful nor helpful to growth performance or immune function in nursery and grower pigs b.t does modulate serum insulin ***,while coconut oil fed at 2%b. weight is a suitab.e sub.titute for dietary antib.otics,this study suggests that no sub.titute for dietary antib.otics is needed at all.

Expression of miR-16 is not a suitab.e reference for analysis of serum microRNAs in melanoma patients

b.ckground: The evolving paradigm shift towards the molecular characterization of melanoma has expanded to include studies of microRNA (miRNA) expression. As miR-16 has b.en utilized as a normalizer in serum-b.sed miRNA studies in several cancers, we evaluated miR-16 expression as a potential reference for normalization of serum miRNA expression in melanoma patients. Methods: 143 primary cutaneous melanoma patients who presented to New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center for surgical resection of AJCC stage I-III disease were studied. In addition, sera samples from 60 control sub.ects were utilized including 22 healthy volunteers, 13 rheumatoid arthritis patients, 20 non-melanoma cancer patients (10 renal cell carcinoma and 10 b.adder cancer), and 5 Atypical Mole Syndrome patients. The Kruskal-Wallis test (k = 6) or Wilcoxon test (k = 2) with b.nferroni correction was used for analyses of miR-16 expression in melanoma patients compared to various control groups, using raw Ct values directly. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare miR-16 expression across stages of melanoma. The equivalence test for independent samples was used to test the equivalence of miR-16 expression among different groups. Results: No significant differential expression of miR-16 was ob.erved b.tween melanoma patients and healthy volunteers (Wilcoxon test, p = 0.37). However, miR-16 did show a significant difference in expression as it related to stage of melanoma (p = 0.015). Additionally, the equivalence test was unab.e to confirm equivalent expression of miR-16 in any melanoma versus control group pair. Conclusion: Our data indicate that miR-16 cannot b. used as a universal normalizer in sera studies of melanoma patients.
