Medicinal plants from the Brazilian Amazonian region and their antileishmanial activity:a review

Leishmaniasis, a neglected disease caused by Leishmania protozoans, primarily affects people in tropical and subtropical areas. Chemotherapy based on the use of pentavalent antimonials, amphotericin B, paromomycin, miltefosine and liposomal amphotericin B is currently the only effective treatment. However, adverse effects, long-term treatment and the emergence of parasite resistance have led to the search for alternative treatments. Natural products used in traditional medicine provide an unlimited source of molecules for the identification of new drugs, and the Amazon region has abundant biodiversity that includes several species of plants and animals, providing a rich source of new products and com- pounds. Although the literature describes numerous promising compounds and extracts for combating Leishmania protozoans, the results of such research have not been embraced by the pharmaceutical industry for the development of new drugs. Therefore, this review focused on the antileishmanial activity of extracts, isolated compounds and essential oils commonly used by the local population in the Brazilian Amazonian region to treat several illnesses and described in the literature as promising compounds for combating leishmaniasis.

Goat whey is an industry-discarded dairy by-product that has interesting nutritional value and a nutrient composition with important functional potential,where proteins have a high biological value and play an important role in the organism’s ***,the aim of this study was to identify,quantify,concentrate and investigate the capacity of goat whey proteins to perform different biological activities and to evaluate their acute *** proteins were quantified and identified by Bradford,Kjehdal and SDS-PAGE *** activity was performed against Listeria monocytogenes,Salmonella spp.,Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli microorganisms and showed MIC ranging from 15 to 120μg mL-1,with the highest inhibition for *** *** activity was performed against human malignant melanoma cells and their proliferation inhibition was up to 66.8%within 72 h of *** highest antioxidant capacity was obtained at concentration 2 mg that showed 29.69%of inhibition of DPPH radical *** acute toxicity test was performed using Artemia franciscana larvae in which whey proteins were able to preserve larval survival throughout ***,we can conclude that goat’s whey has proteins that can play a positive effect on health,with antimicrobial activity and without *** present study highlights the great potential of goat’s whey to be developed as a safe biopreservative or as a functional ingredient in the food industry.

Applying constant precipitation intensity,which does not occur in natural events,is one of the main limitations concerning rainfall simulators in soil erosion *** present work evaluated the InfiAsper rainfall simulator operating with a new control panel to program rainfalls with different precipitation intensities(PI).Infiltration rates and soil and water losses were evaluated in a Distrophic Acrisol(clay loam texture)with simulated rainfalls of 30 mm and duration of 40 min,considering advanced(AD),intermediate(IN),delayed(DE),and inverted intermediate(II)patterns,all with PI peaks of 110 mm h^(-1),and a constant(CT)*** experimental design was in randomized blocks with five treatments(rainfall patterns)and experimental units measuring 2.5×2.5 *** simulator worked satisfactorily,applying the rainfall according to the preconfigured *** simulated rainfall with the CT and II patterns did not promote runoff nor soil *** and runoff rates varied according to the applied rainfall pattern,reaching 97.8 and 27.3 mm h^(-1)(AD),82.1 and 39.5 mm h^(-1)(IN),and 76.2 and 49.7 mm h^(-1)(DE),*** loss and surface runoff totaled each 4.77 g m^(-2)and 3.9 mm(AD),6.70 g m^(-2)and 6.8 mm(IN),and 6.03 g m^(-2)and 7.0 mm(DE).The InfiAsper simulator modified enables varying precipitation intensity besides obtaining satisfactory results in the field and information consistent with the expected characteristics of natural rainfall *** the intermediate and delayed rainfall patterns,soil and water losses are higher than in the advanced.

Atacama Field Campaign: laboratory and in-situ measurements for remote sensing applications

This work presents the preliminary results of the first field calibration campaign performed in the Atacama Desert,Chile,between the 18 and 22 August 2014,called the Atacama Field Campaign(ATAFIC 2014).In situ measurements were performed in order to spectrally characterize the surface reflectance spectra between 0.3 and 2.5μm,radiometric temperature(8.0–14.0μm)and atmospheric measurements.A soil sample was collected and analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction techniques to characterize the surface reflectance spectra and mineralogical composition,*** land surface emissivity in addition to GOES,MODIS and Landsat-8 land surface temperature(LST)were also *** showed that the spectral features of the Atacama soil and the characteristics of this geographical zone,which is featured as the most hyper-arid and cloudless place in the world,make this area a potential target for surface reflectance *** and night LST comparison between field and remote sensing data are lower than 2 K and the Root Mean Square Error for land surface emissivity is close to 2%.This work opens the possibilities to consider the Atacama Desert as a reference target for calibration and validation activities for earth observation missions’purposes.

TNF system in eutopic endometrium from women with endometriosis

The role of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) system in endometriosis is not completely clear and therefore was the focus of this study. In eutopic endometria obtained from women with (n = 41) and without (controls;n = 34) endometriosis during laparoscopy, the subcellular location and the percentages for TNF, TNFR1, TNFR2 and CD45 positive-cells were determined (immunohistochemistry);the protein concentration (ELISA) of the soluble receptors (sTNFR1 and sTNFR2) were measured in 4h-explants culture media and the TNF concentration was performed in ex vivo endometrial homogenates. The TNF, TNFR1 and TNFR2 mRNAs were analyzed by real-time PCR. In control endometria, TNF, TNFR1 and sTNFR1 proteins increased during the late secretory phase. In endometriosis endometria, the protein highest level of TNFR1 was reached during the early and the mid secretory phases and of sTNFR1 concentration during the proliferative phase;however, during the late secretory phase, both TNFR1 and sTNFR1 protein levels were reduced compared to the control endometria (p sTNFR2 concentrations, and TNF and TNFR2 mRNAs were similar in control and endometriosis endometria. Although TNFR1 mRNA was highly expressed, no significant differences were found between control and endometriosis endometria. In summary, this study establishes that TNF and TNFR1 protein expressions and the sTNFR concentrations in eutopic endometria from women with and without endometriosis are dependent on the menstrual cycle. The differences on the TNFR1 and sTNFR1 protein pattern between both groups, mainly during the mid and late secretory phases may play a role in the lower implantation rates observed in women with endometriosis, and also could be related to the altered cell death, which favor the augmented cell viability facilitating the characteristic endometrial implantation and growth outside the uterus in this disease.

Teratocytes are specialized cells released by parasitoid wasps into their *** are known for producing regulatory molecules that aid the development of imma-ture *** have recently reported the primary structures of cystine-rich peptides,including some containing inhibitor cystine knot(ICK)motifs,produced by teratocytes of the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes(Hymenoptera:Braconidae).ICKs are known for their stability and diverse biological *** this study,we produced four putative ICK peptides from the teratocytes of *** using solid-phase peptide synthesis or recom-binant expression in ***,and investigated their functions on host immune modulation as well their potential to impair the development of two lepidopterans after ingestion of the *** addition,the peptides were assayed against pathogens and human *** peptides did not influence total hemocyte count but suppressed cellular immunity,detectable as a reduction of hemocyte encapsulation(CtICK-I,CftICK-II,CtICK-I)and spread indexes(CftICK-IV)in the *** of the peptides influenced the activi-ties of prophenoloxidase and phenoloxidase in the hemolymph of larval Diatraea sacchar-alis(Lepidoptera:Crambidae).CftICK-I and CftICK-II with previously unknown function showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans but were non-toxic to human ***-I,CftICK-II,and CftICK-II increased larval mortality and reduced leaf consump-tion of ***,a permissive host for *** CftICK-III also increased larval mortality and reduced leaf consumption of Spodoptera frugiperda(Lepidoptera:Noctuidae),a non-permissive host for *** study highlights biological func-tions and biotechnological potential of ICK peptides from the teratocytes of ***.

Corrosion behaviour of as-cast ZK40 with CaO and Y additions

The microstructures of as-cast ZK40,ZK40 with 2%(mass fraction)CaO and ZK40 with 1%(mass fraction)Y were investigated,and the intermetallic phase morphology and the distribution were *** having discrete intermetallic particles at the grain boundaries for the ZK40,the microstructure was modified to a semi-continuous network of intermetallic compounds along the grain boundaries for the ZK40 with CaO or Y *** CaO was not found in the ***,Ca was present in Ca2Mg6Zn3 intermetallic compounds which were formed during *** evolution and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests revealed that the addition of CaO slightly enhanced the corrosion resistance whereas Y had a negative effect on the corrosion resistance of *** tests showed that severe localised corrosion as well as corrosion along the intermetallic compounds played an important role in the corrosion process of ZK40-Y whereas the localised corrosion was not pronounced for ZK40 or ZK40?CaO ***-segregation in theα-Mg matrix was notably higher for the ZK40 alloy compared with the modified *** combination of this effect with a possible formation of a more stable corrosion layer for the ZK40-CaO was attributed as the main reason for an improved corrosion resistance for the ZK40-CaO alloy.

Duplex stainless steels are being used on applications that require,especially,high corrosion resistance and overall good mechanical properties,such as the naval and oil-gas exploration *** components employed in these industries are usually obtained by machining,however,these alloys have low machinability when compared to conventional stainless *** this work,a study of the wear developed when milling duplex stainless-steel,LDX 2101,is going to be presented and evaluated,employing four types of milling tools with different geometries and coatings,while studying the influence of feed rate and cutting length in the wear of these *** used have been provided with two and four flutes,as well as three different coatings,namely:TiAlN,TiAlSiN and *** cutting behavior of these tools was analyzed;data relative to the cutting forces developed during the process were obtained;and roughness measurements of the machined surfaces were *** tools were then submitted to scanning electron microscope(SEM)analysis,enabling the identification of the wear mechanisms that tools were subjected to when machining this material,furthermore,the early stages of these mechanisms were also *** this work was done with the goal of relating the machining parameters and cutting force values obtained,identifying,and discussing the wear patterns that were observed in the coating and tools after the milling tests,providing further information on the machining of these alloys.

Mg-Zn-Zr(ZK)alloys exhibit notably high mechanical strength amongst all magnesium alloy ***,due to the formation of low melting point Mg_3Zn_7-precipitates,these alloys are susceptible to hot cracking,thus compromising their metallurgical *** addition of rare earths to ZK alloys is an alternative to form higher melting point intermetallic compounds,speed up dynamic recrystallization,refine grain size,enhance corrosion resistance and extend the service temperature due to improved creep *** work deals with the effect of Ce-base mischmetal addition on the hot rolling behaviour of as-cast ZK60 *** microstructure investigation conducted using electron microscopy and X-Ray diffraction shows that precipitation of Mg_(7)Zn_(3) intermetallics occur during hot rolling,whereas no further precipitation is observed for the ZK60-Mm *** fragmentation of the intermetallic compounds occur during hot rolling and finer particles of Mg_(7)Zn_(3) are observed for the ZK60,whereas Mg_(7)Zn_(3) and Mg Zn_(2) Ce intermetallics are formed in the alloy modified with mischmetal addition.A higher fraction of dynamically recrystallized grains is observed for the ZK60-Mm in comparison to the *** recrystallization takes place in ZK60 with the formation of sub-grains near to the intermetallics and the addition of mischmetal promotes the occurrence of discontinuous recrystallization with the nucleation of new grains close to the *** mechanical strength and,in particular,the ductility of the hot-rolled alloys are notably improved when compared to the same alloys in the as-cast *** mechanical strength is,however,higher for the ZK60 *** solid solution strengthening,softer Mg Zn_(2) Ce intermetallics and more extensive recrystallization contribute to reduce the mechanical strength of *** in both alloys are initiated at coarse intermetallics and propagate through intermetallic-rich regions.
