Role of polymorphisms in genes that encode cytokines and Helicobacter pylori virulence factors in gastric carcinogenesis

The Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection is a determinant factor in gastric cancer(GC) development. However, the infection outcomes are variable and depend on both host and bacterial characteristics. Some host cytokines such as interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-1 Ra, IL-8, IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor-α play important roles in the host immune system response to the pathogen, in the development of gastric mucosal lesions and in cell malignant transformation. Therefore, these host factors are crucial in neoplastic processes. Certain polymorphisms in genes that encode these cytokines have been associated with an increased risk of GC. On the other hand, various virulence factors found in distinct H. pylori bacterial strains, including cytotoxinassociated antigen A, vacuolating cytotoxin, duodenal ulcer promoting gene A protein, outer inflammatory protein and blood group antigen binding adhesin, have been associated with the pathogenesis of different gastric diseases. The virulent factors mentioned above allow the successful infection by the bacterium and play crucial roles in gastric mucosa lesions, including malignant transformation. Moreover, the role of host polymorphisms and bacterial virulence factors in gastric carcinogenesis seems to vary among different countries and populations. The identification of host and bacterium factors that are associated with an increased risk of GC development may be useful in determining the prognosis of infection in patients, what could help in clinical decision-making and in providing of an optimized clinical approach.

BACKGROUND The uncertainties about coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),the change in routine,lifestyles and the reduction of physical contact can cause stress,anxiety,emotional overload,poor sleep and even physical health *** To evaluate the scientific publications available on the relationship between COVID-19 and anxiety experienced in the general population,during the period of social isolation,adopted by governmental organizations and public health policymakers as a measure to contain the spread of *** A literature search was performed systematically exploring the PubMed and Medline databases using the following terms classified as MeSH descriptors:(“anxiety”AND“pandemic”AND“COVID-19”).For the search,in the Biblioteca Virtual em saúde–BVS,***,Web of Science and National Library plat forms, the following keywords were used: ("anxiety" AND "coronavirus" AND"social isolation"). Thirty-seven peer-reviewed articles were found. PRISMA andthe Downs & Black checklist were used for qualitative *** applying the inclusion criteria, seven (n = 7) original scientific articles wereselected. The collated evidence demonstrated increased levels of symptoms ofanxiety and depression during the period of social isolation. The populationbetween 21 to 40 years was most affected. Pulmonary function studies in obese individuals have alerted the pathophysiological changes due to weight gain. However, these changes are not fully explained yet. Objective: To evaluate and analyze the pulmonary function of obese adults in the city of Manaus (AM, Brazil) and to correlate the parameters of spirometry with weight and BMI. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study, in which pulmonary function of 22 adults with grade III obesity was evaluated pre and post bronchodilator administration, performed at the Adriano Jorge Hospital Foundation—FHAJ. Results: Of the 22 patients evaluated, 6 were male and 16 were female;mean age was 37.1 ± 7.4 years, with a weight of 134.2 ± 28.6 kg and a BMI of 51.1 ± 9.4 kg/m2, corresponding to grade III obesity. Spirometry showed a reduction in values obtained from Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second (FEV1) and Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) in relation to those predicted, with 23% of restrictive disorders. There were negative correlations between BMI and PEF, weight and FVC, weight and PEF. The P value for correlation of weight and FEV1 is not statistically significant. Conclusion: Restrictive and obstructive disorders are prevalent in the population with grade III obesity. Correlations between pulmonary function and BMI/weight were negative for this specific population.

BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has become a major health concern *** that context,the understanding of epidemiological and clinical features associated with the disease and its severity is crucial for the establishment of strategies aimed at disease control and *** To describe epidemiological features,signs,symptoms,and laboratory findings among severely ill COVID-19 patients from an inten-sive care unit in northeastern Brazil as well as to evaluate predictor factors for disease *** This is a prospective single-center study that evaluated 115 patients admitted to the intensive care unit in a northeastern Brazilian *** The patients had a median age of 65.60±15.78 *** was the most frequent symptom,affecting 73.9%of the patients,followed by cough(54.7%).Fever was reported in approximately one-third of patients and myalgia in 20.8%of the *** least two comorbidities were found in 41.7%of the patients,and hypertension was the most prevalent(57.3%).In addition,having two or more comorbidities was a predictor of mortality,and lower platelet count was positively associated with *** and vomiting were two symptoms that were predictors of death,and the presence of a cough was a protective *** This is the first report of a negative correlation between cough and death in severely ill severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-infected *** associations between comorbidities,advanced age,and low platelet count and the outcomes of the infection were similar to the results of previous studies,highlighting the relevance of these features.

The present article reports the application of zinc ethyl silicate paint and the use of internal and external paint schemes on carbon steel spheres for the storage of liquefied petroleum gas. The new paint scheme eliminates the steps of blasting in the field and minimizes the collection of waste generated and the environmental impact, reducing the service time onsite and therefore providing a productivity gain and better health and cleanliness at work. The results were obtained through test runs and qualified in bodies-of-proof made with the same characteristics as the sphere, that is, using the same material (carbon steel), thickness, and mechanical formation and subject to the same conditions of design and implementation process. The paint scheme was approved, qualified, and committed to the supplier’s warranty with the paint manufacturer and assembler of the storage spheres for liquefied petroleum gas.

In this study,the sperm ultrastructure of three species of Idarnes genus was investigated using light and transmission electron *** morphology of the three species was similar to that of most Chalcidoidea,with helicoidally twisted nucleus and *** head region consists of an acrosome and a nucleus;the nucleus-flagellum transition region characterized by the presence of mitochondrial derivatives and the centriolar adjunct;a flagellum region,which includes the axoneme with microtubular arrangement 9+9+2 and two mitochondrial ***,the sperm of these three species exhibit features that discriminate one species from each other:(1)only one species,Idarnes sp.2(carme group)exhibited an extracellular sheath surrounding the anterior portion of the nucleus,which extends to the anterior region of the flagellum,but it did not present filaments;(2)the acrosome in the three species was quite different,Idarnes sp.1 and Idarnes sp.2(carme group)has two compartments(acrosomal and subacrosomal vesicles)while Idarnes sp.3(flavicollis group)has a third compartment(perforatorium);(3)the centriolar adjunct elongated and its location among the mitochondrial derivatives is similar for the three species analyzed;(4)mitochondrial derivatives differ between the species,with triangular(Idarnes sp.1 and sp.3)and elongated or flat shaped(Idarnes sp.2)*** data shows that sperm structure may differ within the same genus and confirms the potential of these cells in phylogenetic and taxonomic analyses in the Chalcidoidea superfamily,as well as in Hymenoptera in general.

Alzheimer's disease is a severe, highly disabling neurodegenerative disease, clinically characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive functions, and is the most common form of dementia in the elderly. For decades, the search for disease-modifying therapies has focused on the two main Alzheimer's disease histopathological hallmarks, seeking to prevent, mitigate, or clear the formation of extracellular aggregates of β-amyloid peptide and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles of tau protein, although without clinical success. Mesenchymal stem cell-based therapy has emerged as a promising alternative for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, especially because it also targets other crucial players in the pathogenesis of the disease, such as neuroinflammation, synaptic dysfunction/loss, oxidative stress, and impaired neurogenesis. Herein, we review current knowledge of the therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells and their extracellular vesicles for Alzheimer's disease, discussing the most recent findings in both preclinical and clinical trials as well as how advanced technologies have helped to overcome some limitations and contributed to stimulate the development of more effective treatments.

Anticancer drug nephrotoxicity is an important and increasing adverse drug event that limits the efficacy of cancer *** kidney is an important elimination pathway for many antineoplastic drugs and their metabolites,which occurs by glomerular filtration and tubular *** agents,both conventional cytotoxic agents and molecularly targeted agents,can affect any segment of the nephron including its microvasculature,leading to many clinical manifestations such as proteinuria,hypertension,electrolyte disturbances,glomerulopathy,acute and chronic interstitial nephritis,acute kidney injury and at times chronic kidney *** clinician should be alert to recognize several factors that may maximize renal dysfunction and contribute to the increased incidence of nephrotoxicity associated with these drugs,such as intravascular volume depletion,the associated use of nonchemotherapeutic nephrotoxic drugs(analgesics,antibiotics,proton pump inhibitors,and bonetargeted therapies),radiographic ionic contrast media or radiation therapy,urinary tract obstruction,and intrinsic renal *** of patients at higher risk for nephrotoxicity may allow the prevention or at least reduction in the development and severity of this adverse ***,the aim of this brief review is to provide currently available evidences on oncologic drug-related nephrotoxicity.
