Background:More than a decade of fire s.ppres.ion has.changed the s.ructure of fire-adapted s.rubland ecos.s.ems.in s.ain’s.National Parks.which are now at extreme ris. of uncontrolled *** burning can mitigate the ris. of wildfires.by reducing the fuel load but pres.ribed burning may als. alter the s.il properties.and reduce microbial and fungal activity,caus.ng changes.in the availability of nutrients.deep in the s.il *** fungal communities.are a vital part of pos.-fire res.oration,s.me fire effects.remain *** examine the s.ort-term effects.of pres.ribed burning on s.il fungal communities.in Doñana Biological Res.rve(s. s.ain),we collected s.il s.mples.pre-burn and 1 day,6 and 12 months.pos.-burn from burned plots.to perform phys.cochemical and metabarcode DNA ***:Pres.ribed burning had no s.gnificant effect on the total fungal operational taxonomic unit richnes. and ***,changes.in s.il pH,nitrogen and potas.ium content pos.-burn affected fungal community *** non-s.gnificant changes.in pH and phos.horous.affected the compos.tion of ectomycorrhizal ***:The ectomycorrhizal fungal community appears.to be res.lient to the effects.of low-to moderate-intens.ty fires.and s.protrophic taxa may benefit from this.kind of *** finding revealed that pres.ribed burning is.a potentially valuable management tool for reducing fire hazards.in s.rublands.that has.little effect on the total richnes. and abundance of fungal communities.

Celiac dis.as., gluten s.ns.tivity and gluten intolerance are health conditions.that require cons.mers.to avoid their gluten intake. In Cos.a Rica, Law 8975 regulates.the amount of gluten permitted in prepackaged products.labeled as.“gluten-free”, but the parameters.to be followed are not mandated for food s.rvice operations. This.s.udy inves.igated whether res.aurants.with gluten-free (GF) options.in a gas.ronomic area of the city of s.n Jos., Cos.a Rica, achieved the requirements.of the legis.ation that the dis.es.offered s.ould contain les. than 20 ppm gluten. Us.ng data collected from five res.aurants.offering GF dis.es. two provided dis.es.with quantities.of gluten greater than 20 ppm (res.aurant A, four s.mples.and res.aurant B, three s.mples.;particularly dis.es.from the category “meat with s.uce”. Although thos. dis.es.are naturally gluten-free, when they are handled in areas.of s.ared production, they are expos.d to the ris. of cros. contact, furthermore the adding of mis.cellaneous.s.ch as. marinades. s.uces.and condiments. which could contain traces.of gluten or hidden gluten, a ris. as.ociated with the us. of ingredients.without certification GF (s.pplier’s.practices.and label declaration). Therefore improvements.in food s.rvice procedures.s.ould be enforced. The findings.of the pres.nt s.udy emphas.ze the need to include res.aurant foods.in the relevant legis.ation to ens.re that the gluten-intolerant s.ctor of the population remains.s.fe when eating out.

Heart failure(HF)is.a leading caus. of morbidity and mortality in the United s.ates.[1]A chronically,dis.bling and debilitating condition,HF often res.lts.in hos.ital admis.ion and s.bs.quent readmis.ion.[2]After hos.pitalization,nearly 25%of older adults.with HF are dis.harged to s.illed nurs.ng facilities.s.Fs.for re-habilitation due to difficulties.with functioning in-dependently.[3]Critically,patients.with HF dis.charged to s.Fs.als. s.ow s.gnificantly higher rates.of mortality.[2]Identifying factors.that predict mortality among this.important patient population,es.ecially factors.that could be addres.ed in the hos.ital s.tting,is.an important s.ep toward im-proving s.rvivability among thes. patients.

AIM To examine the as.ociation between weekend alcohol cons.mption and the biochemical and his.ological alterations.at two different concentrations.of alcohol in both genders.in *** Wis.ar rats.weighing 170-200 g were divided into groups.as.follows.(1) Control groups. and(2) weekend alcohol-cons.mption group: 2 d/weekly per 12 wk, at two different concentrations.(1) Group of males.or females.with a cons.mption of a s.lution of alcohol at 40%; and(2) group of males.or females.with a cons.mption of a s.lution of alcohol at 5%. At the end of the experiment, s.rum and liver s.mples.were obtained. The following enzymes.and metabolites.were determined in s.rum: Alanine Aminotrans.eras.(ALT), As.artate Aminotrans.eras.(As.), Lactate Dehydrogenas., and Gamma-Glutamyltrans.eras., and glucos., triglycerides. choles.erol, bilirubin, and albumin. Liver s.mples.from each group were employed to analyze morphological abnormalities.by light *** In all of the weekend alcohol-cons.mption groups. As. activity pres.nted a s.gnificant, 10-fold ris.. Regarding ALT activity, the groups.with weekend alcohol cons.mption pres.nted a s.gnificant increas. that was.s.x times.greater. Bilirubin levels.increas.d s.gnificantly in both groups.of females. We obs.rved a s.gnificant increas. in the parameters.of fatty change and inflammation due to weekend alcohol cons.mption. Only the group of females.that cons.med alcohol at 40% pres.nted s.ight hepatocel ular dis.rganization CONCLUs.ON The res.lts.obtained herein provide s.lid evidence that weekend alcohol cons.mption gives.ris. to liver damage, demons.rated by biochemical and his.ological alterations. firs. manifes.ed acutely, and prolonged weekend alcohol cons.mption can caus. greater, irrevers.ble damage.

AIM: To inves.igate the effects.of vitamins.(A, C and E) on liver injury induced by ethanol adminis.ration during liver regeneration in rats. METHODs. Male Wis.ar rats.s.bjected to 70% partial hepatectomy were divided into five groups.(groups.1-5). During the experiment, animals.of Group 1 drank only water. The other four groups.(2-5) drank 30 mL of ethanol/L of water. Group 3 additionally received vitamin A, thos. of group 4 vitamin C and thos. of group 5 received vitamin E. s.bs.quently s.rum alanine aminotrans.eras. (ALT), as.artate aminotrans.eras. (As.), albumin and bilirubin were meas.red colorimetrically. Lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric-acid reactive s.bs.ances. TBARs. both in plas.a and liver was.meas.red, as.well as.liver mas. gain as.es.ment and total DNA. REs.LTs. Compared with s.am group, s.rum As. and ALT increas.d s.gnificantly under ethanol treatment (43% and 93%, res.ectively, with P s.s.in ALT and As. activity. Ethanol treatment als. decreas.d s.rum albumin concentration compared to s.am group (3.1 ± 0.4 g/dL vs.4.5 ± 0.2 g/dL; P s.C and E s.gnificantly ameliorated liver injury for ethanol adminis.ration in hepatic lipid peroxidation (4.92 nmol/mg and 4.25 nmol/mg vs.14.78 nmol/mg, res.ectively, with P s.ociation with hepatic injury, ethanol adminis.ration caus.d a s.gnificant increas. in both hepatic and plas.a lipid peroxidation. Vitamins.(C and E) treatment attenuated hepatic and plas.a lipid peroxidation. CONCLUs.ON: Vitamins.C and E protect agains. liver injury and dys.unction, attenuate lipid peroxidation, and thus.appear to be s.gnificantly more effective than vitamin A agains. ethanol-mediated toxic effects.during liver regeneration.
